  • The time has come to talk about one of the single most influential groups in all of modern history, the British, and how their Anglo descendants came to dominate America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and many other areas of the planet.
    Be sure to let me know your thoughts on the historic rise of the British nation and the larger Anglosphere. Thanks for watching!

    Personal experience has lead me to believe English ancestry is even more seriously undercounted than many think, the same feeling that causes the overwhelmingly British to just identify as American, seems to cause those of predominant but not overwhelming British ancestry to choose the more popular, recent, or differentiated ancestry. I'm from the Midwest, and I thought I was a German-American, it's what I said I was and it's what I would have put down on a census, but when I made a family tree and took a DNA test, both sources confirmed I was predominantly English, and both only put my (previously thought dominant) German percentage in the 30s. When I did the same for my brother in law, and step father, who both claimed to be Irish, an even more pronounced difference between claimed and true ethnicity appeared, they were each dominantly English, and less than 1/8 Irish. I have now done a total of 7 of these, for 7 unrelated people none of us thought we were predomantly English, 5 of us were.

    It's astonishing how the english language has grown and developed on a small island at the edge of the populated world (spoken by a small number of people in origin) and became the international lingua franca around the globe. I wonder if things will change in the future, will other languages overthrow english as new countries rise to power?

      right now only english. spanish or french can compete for lingua franca
      you need to have a presence on the 5 continents to be considered lingua franca
      thats why chineese how ever rich they become will never become a lingua franca..because its only in east asia
      english only competitors are spanish the most widely spoken language in the world natively. and king language in central and south america. but the economic value of it is low
      french is the big king in west europe & africa. and has presence in oceania. north. central and south america. they used to have a strong presence in asia continent too, but it had declined like crazy the last 20 years
      but french has the advantage to be the language of top economical rich country like france/switzerland/monaco/luxumbourg/belgium/cnadda and others

      When you subsume all the self identified in US of these groups with Americans ( mostly British ) and those claiming to be Irish but are actually English or Scots Irish ( ie Clinton,Bush ) I think you probably come to the largest ethnic group. But regardless its amazing that my bloodline has stayed stricly European for centuries since the 1600s when my ancestors go to the United States. • @donbarzinitut
      @donbarzinitut 6 лет назад +15

      It's a well known fact that the Anglo-Saxons pushed the Celts to the fringes of the British Isles, (i.e. Wales, Cornwall) this is why they have much more Celtic admixture than the English.

    • @CountScarlioni
      @CountScarlioni 6 лет назад +7

      Rather than a well known fact it was in reality just a well known assumption. One that has had to be re-evaluated due to genetic testing of the British population.
      Today the English are on average rather more related to their fellows in Wales and Scotland than they are to continental Germanics. There was some heavy settlement by Angles, Saxons, Frisians, Wends, Jutes, Norse etc. on the on the east coast of Britain so Germanic genes tend to spike a lot more in those areas but you don't need to get too deep into England (or Scotland) before it becomes hard to tell Scottish, Welsh or English genes apart. 70% of English genes are from an earlier British admixture which proves the Anglo-Saxons did not drive out the Celtic population in the areas they conquered. They just settled amongst them and culturally assimilated the natives. Even now there are some white ethnically English people who have almost no Germanic genes at all.
      That said, the Welsh are thought to have the highest percentage of ancient genes on the British mainland. Perhaps in part because of their stand off against Germanic invaders, although much is probably just because of the Geographic isolation resulting from the Welsh terrain.
      To make things even more complicated the Celts were not British natives either and Celtic genes aren't necessarily dominant even in Celtic nations. They invaded the British Isles just under 3000 years ago during the tail end of the European bronze age. The Celts who came to Britain originated in central Europe, especially in the regions around modern Switzerland.
      Before the Celts were other European Settlers - the somewhat mysterious "Beaker People" so named for their distinctive pottery left behind in archaeological deposits. The "native" Britons before them, the ones responsible for building the cairns, standing stones and stone circles like Stonehenge, arrived after the end of the last Ice Age and had migrated north into Britain from what is now modern Spain. From their genetic remains like those taken from "Cheddar Man" it appears they were short, dark haired, dark skinned and blue eyed. Not what you'd traditionally think of as an ancient Briton!
      The British population are still carrying many of the genes of these ancient peoples even after multiple waves of migration and conquest over so many millennia.
      One of the more curious points of British migrations is just how miniscule the Roman and Norman footprints were on the local population. The Romans especially, despite having been here for centuries contributed only a percent or two.

    • @jvandermerwe5274
      @jvandermerwe5274 6 лет назад +3

      Most modern English are actually genetically the closest related to Anglo-Saxons. Although most of the Pictish people adopted a more Celtic culture and religion, they originated in Scandinavia and were of Germanic origin.

      I believe it was because the English have always been fierce rivals with the Dutch. Their have been countless wars and conflicts. The sea wars, Napoleonic wars, Boer wars and even conflicts in the first and second world war.
      Just look at how many negative slangs the English have in their language that mentions Dutch. The English probably erased most typical Dutch things in New Holland/ New Amsterdam
      Also the Dutch kept a trading empire, not an empire for settlement. Because the Dutch are stingy and only think of money.
      The Netherlands were always an okay place to live, so why move I imagine

    The English language is still Germanic. This table that says 30% Germanic, 30% French and 30% Latin has often been proven not to be very accurate, especially because French itself is a Romance language and therefore alone it would be hard to differ between French/Norman heritage or Latin heritage of words as French words mostly derived from Latin already. Apart from that, this is just a representation of ALL the vocab of the english language today. Today's german vocab in total also has about 30% Latin heritage but most every day vocab doesnt and so most english every day vocab is Germanic. The English grammar is Germanic and was simply facilitated a lot, therefore German still seems more complex but linguisticly, they are related to eachother, more than English and any Romance language are.

    The English language is a Germanic language simply because the most used words in everyday speech are Germanic. It's a Germanic language heavily influenced by Latin and French, not the other way around. That's why it's a Germanic language. You really just have to swap out a few Latin and French words to make everyday English into a fully Germanic language - a fun little game in itself.

    Yes, only a small percentage of English words have a Germanic origin. However, you also need to take into consideration the frequency of use of the words. The 5,000 or so most commonly used words in the English Language have an almost 100% Germanic origin. So, even though English has been a huge borrower of words from other languages, its core is Germanic to this day.

    It all boils down to climate and flora. Historically it has been too cold to grow grapes in Britain but warm enough to grow white oak. The grain structure of white oak is tight so it doesn't absorb much water. This makes it good for building ships and making barrels for wine. You can harvest trees sooner to make barrels then ships consequently countries producing wine had a dearth of large white oak for ship building.

      Aye, it was a shame to leave Scotland out. A people misunderstood outside of the UK perhaps... and even inside the UK to be honest :) The lowlanders, as far as I know, (as an English midlander,) are much the same as the north eastern English by blood. Indeed a chunk of the lowlands used to be in England until it was annexed - with all its people - by Scotland many a century ago.

    Good video.
    Although the ‘invasion’ of Britain by the Angles, Saxons and Jutes is somewhat disputed. It may have just been a natural migration, given no evidence of any major force during the decades following the mercenary period. It was more likely a gradual migration of small separate societies towards highly fertile lands. The ‘Anglo-Saxon’ vs Briton wars came a few centuries later once cultural tensions rose as Britons where forced towards Wales.
    It is a common misconception that the Anglo-Saxons (which is an oxymoron in itself), invaded Britain. It is far from fact, with many counter arguments against it happening as a military invasion. And historians such as yourself should highlight that fact.

    The Normans who invaded England in 1066 spoke french, not “Norman”. William the conquer’s ancestors had migrated to their eponymous land (Normandy, now in France) from Scandinavia some two centuries earlier and gave up their Norse language (the basic root of modern Danish, Swedish and Norwegian and considerable contributor to English, French and the Insular Celtic languages Gaelic, Welsh, Cornish and Manx) within a few generations. The conquest of England by the Duke of Normandy introduced the medieval french language characteristic of Normandy to English court and royal administration throughout England , making french almost as important a contributor to english language as Norse (Jutish and Anglish were very similar to Norse) and only surpassed by west Germanic Saxon. King Harold, last Anglo-Saxon King of England would have spoken Norse fluently, yet his distant relative William the Conquerer (whose invading army defeated the Anglo-Saxons at Hastings, killing King Harold ) would have only spoken french fluently.

    Hey Masaman, great video as always! Just being a bit anal :) a few things to mention as you sked for our thoughts:
    * After the Angles, Jutes, Frisians and Saxons, the Island was invaded at around the 7,8to900s by the vikings, and then only in the 1000s by the Normans (which were Christianised french vikings in their own right)... I guess you jumped from the Angle-Saxon (jutes and frisians too but popularly called as the Saxons) invasion straight to the Norman one in 1066... important to mention there were lots of fighting between the Angle-Saxons (with maternal Celtic or Keltic genes) against the later Viking invaders... the word "fighting" itself is from the viking and its ethnical and linguistic element deserves its place!
    I just thought the Scandinavian viking element didnt get the right attention on the video as the now so called Anglo World is at least 15-20% genetically Viking.... big part of the now called "Angles-World" has its lexicon and genes born from the Scandinavian Viking real. Because your videos are great and accurate, I`d suggest embedding the viking element to this one, as a matter of justice to history and the very language we are speaking now! (I`m not Anglo although I live in England :-), I`m a Brazilian of Italian, Franco-German, and Iberian descent :))
    Keep on the great work!
    Cheers!

    The thing about the percentage of words in English of French and Latin origin vs. Germanic origin is that a lot of those of French and Latin origin aren't as common in most spoken forms pf English since they're either technical terms for things like the sciences, though I will cede that even then, the words of French origin are significantly more common than those of pure Latin origin. Another thing that would inflate those numbers is whether or not affixes are counted.

      The Norman (Rollo's people), were never conquered by France.
      They were ceded the territory latter known as Normandy by the king of West Frankia because he could not drive them out. And in exchange, Rollo (and his men) swore fealty to him, and swore to protect the Franks against further vikings raids.
      Centuries latter, the dukes of Normandy (now the House of Plantagenet) having become very powerful, fought against the House of Capet for control of French territories and lost at the Anglo-French War (1213-1214).
      But until then, they had remained vasals of the French Kings (for their territories in France. In england they were kings)
      Latter yet, conflict for the succession to the French throne between the Plantagenet (who had a strong claim to the throne of France), and the Valois would lead to the 100 years war, and then the Plantagenet would give up trying to get territories on the continent. (and thus their successors in england would be free to focus on a strong navy...).
      As to what happened to the "vikings" Normans, they were assimilated by the population already living in "France" and "england"
