  • In this video we will share a demo review of the Zoom G2 X Four and the G2 Four. First of all we will hear the unit in action with a demo song, then we will describe the technical characteristics of the unit, than we will hear more sounds, also building together presets, checking out a clean and overdriven tone, and finally I will give my 2 cents. So, I hope you enjoy and please don’t forget to subscribe and ring the bell as it would be of a great help! Thank you!

I got a Zoom g2x four last week. I own a Hx stomp XL and a Boss GT-1. I have previously owned a Boss GT1000 core and a Boss GX100. I am “modeler curious.” I think that condition might soon get its own definition and designation from the psychology societies.
Anyway, I used the Zoom G2x four for 3 gigs last week. Two were direct input gigs and the other I used the G2x four for effects in front of an amp. It worked really well in all cases. I brought the HX stomp with me as insurance in case the G2x four let me down. But it performed very well and I left the stomp in the bag.
I bought the Zoom hoping to get a really small and light unit with a built in expression pedal. And I am really glad I did!
Also, I powered the unit via USB using an Amazon mobile battery pack for charging phones. It worked without issue and for a really long time without draining the battery much at all. That may be the trade-off benefit for the crappy screen (and it is crappy).
I spent quite a few hours with it getting patches that worked for me. But it was fun and well worth it. I have a few IR’s that I am pretty partial to and use in the stomp. But honestly, I do not miss the ability to load IR’s in the Zoom. The amp models sound good with the cabinet simulations that Zoom programmed at the factory.

Super helpful comment. I am in the same situation where I have a main amp modeller, the GT1K Core, which I am really happy with, and I'm looking for an affordable but 100% presentable direct-to-PA modeller as a back up. I think your evaluation of the G2X fits the bill.

I have a G1XOn, and I have to agree. The G1X Four is just a building upon of the features for the G1XOn, with the interface more versatile, yet more convoluted and less intuitive, and the addition of being able to load IR's. These new G2 series units seem to go backwards, not only going back to the G1On/G1XOn issue of lack of external IR features, but now you can't pair different cabs with different amps? Maybe they should have used one of those IR layers for the actual speakers, and then used the other two to blend isolated power tube IR's. TBH it makes more sense to buy the G1 Four or G1X Four and then spend the $200 on an IR loader pedal like the Cab Box from Joyo or the Solid Studio from NuX. Or, spend the extra $50 on a unit with an internal FX loop and then get a cheaper power tube emulation pedal (Guitar Fetish, based in Sarasota, FL, USA, makes the Twin Clean Drive for $80, but I don't know about international shipping outside the US), or a cheaper IR loader from Sonicake or Flamma or something, and load power tube IR's on it.

I still use my super old PS02 (has a killer emulation section) and now have the Zoom R4 multitrack. That has some effects and amp combos and got this Zoom G2x Four because it has two effects I wanted from the R4. I also wanted a backup rig to mirror my presets in the old PS02, which are really fantastic. Mine is arriving this week and snagged a used unit and will report back.

The display and the menu navigation is really bad. The sounds have gotten a little better, they sound freer, more airy. Still no comparison to the Kemper, but really good. Imo Zoom needs to hear your customers, add IRs to the small pedals like the G2 Four and the possibility to change the chain parameters in the same patch like the other manufacturers do.

Exactly, ,thanks for your answer and review ;)
Many people don't know how to appreciate this feature of zoom multi-effects pedalboards, a feature that can be very useful, for example having 2 OVERDRIVE blocks, 1 CHORUS block, 1 PHASER block and 1 DELAY block, in the same preset or patch.
In the EFFECT mode of the Zoom G2X FOUR "it can be used as a standard pedalboard with stomp boxes" making multiple combinations of effects or blocks, according to the user's needs.
People criticize ZOOM a lot, they say they live in the past... but this feature is from years ago, it appears in cheap products like "ZOOM G1on", other manufacturers haven't implemented it in their current products yet... so Who lives in the past and does not make innovations? ... it's not just ZOOM, the same could be said of other manufacturers.

@@LeoGibsonGtr More or less agree. It´s not that I want to defend Zoom for the display choice. That said, the mobile app (yeah, 1€, I know) turns the UI into a great one. I think most of the functions to be made "on the fly" are easily made with unit´s display and knobs, while complex can be done with an old Android phone that can be plugged in. Then you have a hi quality screen, with perfect touch function and intuitive operation. If you ask me if I prefer a tiny color built-in screen vs a mobile phone (or tablet, or iPad) touch screen... well, I´m not sure What I´d prefer, but I guess it´d be the app option (which no other unit in this price range has, as far as I know). And I also think that a screen like that is probably unavoidable to be able to power the device through USB bus. The fact that the app is not free is weird... but if you think it for a second, I see it like a symbolic thing. Nowadays, the G2X Four can be purchased for 193€... so 194€ with the app.

Sound matters, absolutely, but when you look at something like the Ampero and this, it's comically embarrassing. On a final note, it's 2023 Zoom...why do you insist on display graphics that look like they were created with an Etch-a-Sketch?

I completely agree. Great demo song Leo. I had a Zoom G5 in the past and didn't bond with it and got rid of it for Line 6 products. Such an odd choice for Zoom to stick with the ridiculous B&W display in 2023. If you're going to do that, then make the price point lower. God bless and rock on 👍😁🎸

There is one more thing that is a big turn off for me, it wasn't mentioned here, but I guess things haven't changed much from G3gn. The looper and drum machine aren't separate units but effects that have to be attached to each patch. And that makes them pretty unusable when you want to use different sounds while playing over the loop. Simply speaking, you can't change patches. And switching on / off effects within the pach you're playing at the moment is almost impossible with such small numbers of footswitches. I would buy this effect if this issue was fixed.

Everyone seems to be so gun ho about IR loading but it seems too much editing and playing around with software and computers. Bedroom players have become very cork sniffy, very american to always want the newest and most expensive toy out there. My Zoom G1 Four can be made to sound AMAZING with some tweaking, and it didn't cost me $600 like helix or worse QC, Fractal, etc. I love not to have ot use a computer to edit my tones or have to load IR cabs.

My first modeller was a ZOOM505 in 1999. Such a waste of money that was. Now 24 years apart seems like not much changed by this company.
If you want a cheap multieffect buy a Digitech RP360. It's an almost 10 years old model, but I still use it as a backup next to my Fractal FM3. My second backup would be a flyrig like the Sonicake Black Hammer if I would use an amp again.

Zoom in terms of guitar fx processors has been lacking behind for some years now, if they don't change their philosophy about their products now, looks, UI, options etc. up to the competition, they're going to be out of business zoom... I mean soon. DigiTech is already going through something similar and it's future is uncertain, but at least they have put iconic products in the market in the recent years, meaning Drop Tune series, and DOD pedals reissues, but unfortunately the same can't be said about Zoom.

They added undo redo on the looper..40 second mode. And there’s a tap tempo option. But they took the battery option away. And like he mentioned the screens a joke. I don’t know, why they keep bringing these updated petals into market. It’s like they’re in a room by themselves When they design this. And now we have to wait three more years for the next (try) one, they should buy the five competitive pedals in this range and take the best from everything. Love zoom but, Very disappointed. This thing is gonna price drop like a rock . 229€? Ha !
