    Fascinating to hear the history of these buildings, I lived in this area for some years and as a part-time taxi driver in the 80's got to know many of these villages. Thanks for posting.

    Is the wharf something to do with the nearby brickworks?

      A good question @1963MAN. Yes, it is: The canal itself provided a reliable source of water for the brickworks, which used it to steam their kilns. Also, being close to the wharf meant they could easily transport their finished products to markets along the waterway, reducing transportation costs.
