JJK was pretty well at paving it’s own unique lane, but the Shibuya arc cemented it’s legacy as a force to be reckoned with. Gege Akutami spends a good portion of building the world and characters prior to the story and pretty much says, “okay, now all hell will break loose”.
Gojo has been from day one known to be the strongest. Can’t kill him? Expose his weakness of protecting civilians and seal him up and let’s see how all hell breaks loose without him. It’s like every single thing that could’ve gone wrong without Gojo, went absolutely wrong. We get to see first hand how fragile this Jujutsu society really is and how strong and scary the villains actually are, and how the protagonists are forced to not hold back at all.
It was the same feeling as a kid when you watch DBZ when Goku gets the heart virus and the Z Fighters are fighting for their lives against the Androids, but this was of course on a different level.
The sense of desperation that feels like everything is on the line. This wasn’t a mission, this was a damn declaration of war.
And the FIGHTS ARE PERFECT. The perfect mix of choreography, story beats, paneling, pacing. God it’s just so damn good.
JJK now set itself apart that it doesnt have to follow the rules. We have no idea who is safe in the series besides possibly Yuji, Megumi and Yuta. But even then that’s up in the air. That kind of anticipation of the unknown is masterfully done from this point on.

your point about knowing how powerful the villains actually are without gojo around couldn't be more right. Gojo was fighting like 4 special grade spirits without taking a single damage, didn't even go all out, and killed one of them, but without him gone you see mahito kill off Nanami and nobara(we have no idea yet but I think she's alive), seeing choso destroy yuji in their fight, and jogo killing naobito, violating maki and pretty much did 99% of damage to Nanami. I always thought jogo was fodder ever since his fight with gojo, but this arc proves how far away gojo and sukuna sit at the very top of the sorcerer world

This is only thing he agrees with Gojo. He later sees Yuji's growth as a person and let's him fight along in his fight.

That being said, if it is a feint by the author to exploit that trope, it's an odd way of doing it. As you said, she doesn't really have a goal beyond fighting curses so making her death here isn't tragic for her character only Yuji's. This feels like the start of a transformation for her new character goal or her obtaining reversed curse technique since the author reminded us on her reason for her becoming a sorcerer in the first place through the flashback rather than the end of her character.

Ex. see Maki and Yuta who had not appear in many chapters, once they come back, Gege gives them the spotlight which they deserve. I don't think Nobara is the exception, Gege has a lot of stuff on his sleeves, it won't suprise me if Nobara's come back in the most suprising way.
Learning about her character as the one who are the most well-define in who she is, it's not impossible with Gege starting her comeback where she's at her weakest point. In which the damage that Mahito's cuz on her making her lost sense of who she is. It was a motif that really made this manga stand out for me, that the mentors actually acknowledged the younger characters as the children they are, and made an effort to give them the childhood freedoms they deserved. Now they've been forced out of everything they knew, their mentor figures killed or dismantled, and they're on their own trying to survive in a new and dangerous world.

After shibuya arc, the culling game arc i dropped this manga, it just all over the place, no coherent narrative, exposition dump in massive amount, it just a light novel at this point, it feels like the author wanted to change the story mid way and introducing new world, new character dumped out of nowhere like stern ritters in bleach, there to just fight and killed, gags are fell off in newer season, hard topic writing is predictable and man i just hate seeing it that way, i really really enjoy everything until the shibuya arc
Spoiler alert !!, look at zen'in family, they built up with these character in the MIDDLE, not in the beginning, they only plaster up names then the whole family introduced, i was expecting a war or something it just for a sake of the growth of ONE character the entire family exist, why... Just why... Why are they built up like that, the leader clan fighting yuuji and wanting to kill fushiguro, give us all out war for that, it just boil down to a joke "i will be the next heir of zen'in family" the next page it's read "that day the zen'in family massacred

The one thing i love about this arc so much is how well paced it is. Such density of character arcs, storylines, and intervening fights is packed into a single event, and the way all of the separate cogs of this arc turn around each other and complement one another. It help see the shibuya arc as not a set of events, with a main protagonist and their path as the focus, but a jumbled net of different pieces of a singular story. The storytelling makes it seem incredible because it forms a complex event that is still manageable to follow and enjoy because we never know what is truly going to happen next.

He stated it was the acclamation of the soul, and when he smacked his stub into his hand, nobody switched places, since it was a bluff, and he stated that his boogie woogie technique is no longer a possibility for him. It just caught mahito off guard with the bluff. Besides that, almost nothing is wrong here!!

Not if they're done right & he has been throughout the series. There are ways to keep him outta fights like in the tournament arc, have him travel to deal with other threats like the cursed womb or spread him thin like Shibuya. For an overarching arc having him sealed is a great way to handle it but not the only way b/c we know some veils can keep him out & there's a lot of old sorcerers with powerful techniques being revealed. Just like with Yuta they could make him take on a colony alone so we could see him but he'd only affect the story so much

Gojo is one of the few op anime characters I like. His powers are kinda bs to me, like dude can’t be touched literally. He more than makes yo for that in his character value. JJK weaved a barrage of gunfire in terms of cliches and plot holes when they wrote Gojo. Yes, Gojo is the big bro of JJK no one wants smoke with, but he’s also a genuinely likeable character, that serves his narrative role of teacher, badass and comedian.
I will say that while he does change some throughout the story but for the most part, he’s maintained his same ideals and goals and he’s never tested. That’s the unavoidable drawback of having a character that broken. But things have the potential to change drastically when he gets free from the prison realm. A lot of shit went down, seeing his students get murdered and seeing all his hard work at achieving his dream be lost might be a trigger that could activate a true character arc for Gojo as well. It would literally have to be that because the only other option is he stays in the prison cause no one is beating him if he turns.
Good character base, interesting, if broken, powers and the potential to have a character progression on par with zuko.
It’s still fuck his powers tho. When it was first fully explained how broken Gojo is my first fear is that madara reincarnated into another anime to solo that universe too. I was pleasantly surprised seeing the opposite happen

  • @LuciidDreamz

2 areas to mention. One is a correction, the other you failed to mention. 1: Megumi didn’t exorcise Maharaga. That was the whole plot point about it basically being a suicide mission to summon him. Other shikigami
users have summoned him but none could exorcise him, including Megumi at that time. 2: You mentioned Uzumaki but not the seriousness of it. Kenjaku mentions that Uzumaki is a specific type of ability that exists parallel with a Domain Expansion. Only a select few sorcerers can use an ability of that class but that revealed that there are abilities equal to or greater than a domain expansion. Aside from that, awesome review man!

I hate spoiler warning. As if the video’s title is about something then it should be discussed in it’s entirety. This is post Shibuya.
A couple years ago there were two huge news articles in Japan. 1) a mentally handicap hospital employee was sentenced & blamed for killing someone on life support. The detectives knew she wanted a boyfriend>Husband & kids. One of them used this, saying if she signed the confession he would love her & marry her. She signed. Her lawyer fought for 8 years to get her releases. She was completely innocent. Death was natural. This was known at the start but family pressured the hospital.
    2) a judge came out and admitted he sentenced innocent people to even death. As he couldn’t argue with his coworkers/elders decisions. Even when it came just down to him, he couldn’t contradict the others previous ruling. And it’s very widespread issue.
The cloak in JJK is like when the news organizations claimed Fukushima was safe. But when an independent journalist went to the same spot with his own detector it proved it was extremely dangerous. Or even the Covid cases that even post olynpics are manipulated.
Lastly at the start of the series when they pointed out, schools & hospitals and offices( by drawing factories) being likely cursed locations, due to negative energy which is just straight up psychological issues, overworked, over stress being the basis of the power system in JJK is so genius.
I bring this up as in chapters 150~160ish shows a distraught lawyer and his backstory.
PS: love the author for having the main character be relatable. Not having a dream to be the strongest. Hell so many people have talents but didn’t care for them. But Yuji just being a cog. How important cogs are, yet underestimated by those with grandiose thoughts/desires. And how strong, intelligent, powerfully willed people can be by supporting others. They may not run major organizations or try to change the world, but they support those who are.
There’s so much more ~ but mainly wanted to point that lawyer scene out. And how much the author is saying indirectly and directly.

Edited: Deleted as was too long, and covered more then just the Shibuya arc.
But will say, JJK is so god damn good. One Piece gets so much credit for world building, foreshadowing & unique story telling techniques.
But JJK symbolizes real issues in Japan so well, so many political views, social issues, mindsets of many.
Wether it’s been the dwindling countryside, people doing anything they can to leave. The value on $ in regards to just obtaining it, not even spending it. But also the author reaching out to those working 9-5’s.
There’s reason why McDonald’s in the west can vary dramatically from day to day or location to location, while in the East it’s consistent.
Same with how clean things are.
Not everyone has big dreams, or goals that others might think are rather simple but to the individual it’s a big deal.
Yuji’s growth regarding his goal is so good too.
