I think it all depends on the kinds of walls you have. I have found that mostly it does not cause damage. However, it absolutely can just like anything else sticky you add to the wall. If you take a butter knife and remove the pages that way, that should do the trick!
If you put painter's tape on the wall as a base, then put the hot glue on your items and stick them on top of the painter's tape, it won't damage your walls.

I have really hard time getting the glue stick to feed through the nozzle on my cordless glue gun..

My concern is removing hot glue at the end of the year. Will it damage?
