You're welcome to share your result here, and let me know what are the difficult consonants for you to tell. Hope this training make you differentiate these sounds better;)
Hey grace! first off thank you for creating this challenging quiz for us all it truly motivates me to wannw study harder but I often mistake the S sound for a Q example #24 was qi but I guessed chi what would be a good tip to help me be able to better seperate the two from each other?
Deonte Sampson You’re welcome;) Actually the vowels combining with “ch” and “q” are quite different, you don’t need to worry too much. For example, “ch” combines with u and other vowels except i and ü sound.(When you see “chi”, the “i” is not the actual i vowel. It doesn’t pronounce as the vowel, i.) On the other hand, J combines with i and ü. (when combining, the pinyin present as “u” but actually is “ü”) so you can easily separate them by the vowels they combine! ;)
@@GraceMandarinChinese Oh I see thank you for taking the time to explain it to me I really appreciate it!😃 #mandarinteacheroftheyear #graceforpresident❤
I used the vowels to help me guess all of them and the only ones I've got wrong are the ones when the vowels are harder for me to distinguish. The hard ones for me are: qiao (I heard chao), juan (I heard zhen) and shua (I head xua). Thanks!
I am a beginner in Chinese. I got almost all of the consonants right but got most of the tones wrong. Very useful test - definitely helps me realise what I need to work on!
14/25 I'm actually surprised I got that many right since I've been only learning for a couple weeks. Definitely harder than I expected, but great training
At my first attempt a few hours ago I only got about 14 of them they all sounded so similar to me but a now with hearing more of the sounds I can decipher them better and got 20 out of 14 this test was really helpful thank you. I really appreciate all the videos you make. In the past 5 days of beginning to learn chinese I've grown in my pronounciation and listening skills thank you so much
At the beginning of the semester, I took this test and had no clue which was which and I felt so frustrated... I only got like 3-5 right. Now I took it (the first time since then) and got 96%! and the only reason I missed one was because I didn't know we were also practicing the "c" sound. Practice makes perfect! Don't feel discouraged if you don't get it right now, it gets better! I can't wait for my next Chinese class.
You should add this to your pronunciation playlist You have really help me to distinguish Chinese sounds and do them thnak you so much!, know I'll be able to sing wayv's songs >
I went through the pronunciation videos pronouncing thing near perfectly and feeling great about my achievements - this was a wake up call! Didn’t get any of them!
Aaaaah I messes it up hahah I was so bad , the good thing is I can do the sounds, thanks to your video now I can focus in specific recognition sounds. Thanks a lot
Still balancing through listening which character is easy and difficult to pronounce like me as beginner learner of mandarin language. Thank you Teacher Grace. More videos please to learn...
This was very useful thank you😊 I have to concentrate on 'ch' and 'q' the first three times I've confused one for the other but then got the following three right.
Hiii :) I decided just today to learn Mandarin (I hope I can stick with it). I'm lucky I discovered your channel right at the beginning because it's really helpful! I watched many of your videos and you explain things really well, and now I took this test and got 14/25 which is not really good but I think it's pretty good for beginners! Thanks to this, I actually think I have a chance to speak fluently one day, so thank you :)
I think my problem isn't isolated to particular consonants, rather it is some of the combinations consonant + vowel. I like listening without looking at the character since it can give a clue. Some sounds I totally nail each time, others I need to practice.
I got 9/25 I'm around HSK1 but haven't taken a test yet. I noticed I struggled particularly with the Zh initial. Thanks for posting this has made me realise I need to work on my listening skills more 😎👍
@@sasino I don't believe zh and j can be distinguished as individual consonants without knowing all the vocab. Like in native English we have cot and caught, and while any native can hear the difference, isn't it because we expect to hear it? Any of us can hear the difference in perfect isolation.
Thank you for this video. On the first try it basically confirms what I thought: After listenting to some music and a TV show and news I still find it difficult to distinguish between j or q, z or c and zh or ch. I think its because its almost the same sound if I understood the other pronunciation videos correctly. I got 20/25 with exception of questions 1, 4, 10, 12 and 16 but it took some effort.
This is really helpful, as a got to know what sounds it is hard for me to pronounce. I got 23/25 right, and messed up ch/q in the first one and zh/j in the 12th. I'm going to put more attention into studying these more carefully. Thank you for your videos!
I can consistently differentiate if it is a hard, aspirated or soft sound. But I can't differentiate, for example, 'q' and 'c', 'sh' and 'x', etc.. But I wouldn't mistake a 'j' for a 'q' or a 'zh' for a 'ch'. In total I got 9/25. And I didn't completely sucked by mistaking, say, a 'z' and a 'q'.
I just devised a marking rule, to make it more fun and also more tough The 4 points for each question are divided as: • 2 for correct consonant • 1 for correct vowels • 1 for correct tone • Also if you get the consonant wrong, the vowel and tone even if correct wouldn't be considered • If you get some of the vowels correct for example for the 1st question I wrote "qāo" instead of "qiāo" that's half a mark deducted • If you get the tone correct but on a different vowel for example I wrote "chaó" instead of "cháo" that's also half a mark deducted
It is my first week of learning pinyin. 19 out of 25 by the help of my textbook. I need to train better so i pass another test but this time without my textbook. After g, k, h it hits hard lmao 😁 Thanks for this content. 🙌🏾👍🏿
First try, date: 29.08.2021: 10 correct, 5 had only the wrong tone, with 3 i had no idea. mixed up ch&q, was unfaliliar with c twice, mixed j&zh twice, and mixec up zh&q and zh&ch once respectively.
watching all these dramas has really helped with my listening >_< I got a goodish score. But I did have to listen to some more than twice before I could pick lol. Thank you for this video. Because of it I've noticed I get confused with x/s and ch/q. I'm going to focus on these for now and rewatch your pronunciation video for these two.
Sw Therese I’m glad this video helped you find out what you need to work on more! And so happy that you got a great score!! 繼續加油(继续加油)I believe that next time you’re gonna get the answers all correct! :D
First time I got about half right. On a second listen I didn't miss anything, mostly because I listened much more carefully, only partly because I remembered the first test.
I was going to say I'm really bad at this, but I seem to be in the same ballpark as everyone else. It's a start. I would appreciate another test like this. I'd like to re-test with a clean slate. :)
Thank you so much for these! I have a pinyin listening quiz today and your videos have really helped me prepare!! Although I do still have trouble with the c sound I've only been learning for a month and a half!
Wow I got 20/25 so the pointd are 80, I didn't expect a so high score, but anyway thanks to this I understood what are the consonants that I struggle the most with, which are q and j. Thank you for this video, 謝謝!
Thanks. I got 3 right. Missed 7 due to tones. 15 due to other. Looks like I have trouble between ㄕ and ㄒㄧ,ㄔ and ㄑㄩ, ㄛㄥ and ㄨㄥ. I also forget to include ㄨ; I guessed ㄘㄣ and ㄘㄟ when it's ㄘㄨㄣ and ㄘㄨㄟ.
17/25 I'm happy, tomorrow I will have my fourth Chinese class, so I'm really happy I can distinguish the sounds like this, even if it wasn't 100%! I guess I have more problems with how to pronounce them 😭 But I'm trying to practice, I'm sure sooner or later I will get the hang out of it! Thank you for this little test! 🥰💓
I only got less than 10 even but it's ok I'm still in HSK 1. What surprised me is that i seem to struggle more on the consonants rather than the tones.
22/25, mixed ㄔ with ㄑtwice and ㄓ with ㄐ once, but at least I got almost all the tones correctly! One really hard thing for me is recognizing the final -n versus -ng (like ㄢ vs ㄤ)

Harder than I expected! I got 20/25 initials correct, but only 12/25 correct with finals and tones also. I seem to be confusing the 2nd and 3rd tones, plus initials J/Zh and S/X. Other than testing, what ways can I improve? Listening to someone slowly read text I can see perhaps? (Can there be a video for this?)
Zh and J sometimes challenge me. Really, Ts and C are hard sometimes, like Caì and Tsaì. It is especially hard because my inlaw family are from Taiwan, so the way they speak Mandarin is all forward at the teeth, unlike a more northern accent which I find more distinguishable.

Omg. I only got 5 correct answers. Thank you for this video. Now, I know what I need to practice.
I didn't do well either, but less then 6 and one can't say statistically that you didn't get those out of just luck.
Thank you thank you thank you. Some are still difficult but I will persevere!
I just devised a marking rule, to make it more fun and also more tough
The 4 points for each question are divided as:
• 2 for correct consonant
• 1 for correct vowels
• 1 for correct tone
• Also if you get the consonant wrong, the vowel and tone even if correct wouldn't be considered
• If you get some of the vowels correct for example for the 1st question I wrote "qāo" instead of "qiāo" that's half a mark deducted
• If you get the tone correct but on a different vowel for example I wrote "chaó" instead of "cháo" that's also half a mark deducted
This way I got 68 out of 100 marks,
But if I follow the simple rule of only guessing the consonant i got 22 correct so that's 88 marks

What do I need to know to answer theses questions? Because so far I just know the Pinyin . Next week I’ll be studying the tones. Can you answer me?
szc vs xjq are same to my ear. However, it seems that szc are combined with /u/ vowel and xjq did with /i/ vowel. Does my theory work?
When jqx is combined with u, the u has the 2 dots on top and is pronounced like the u in French. So the u in ju, qu, and xu are different than the u in su or zu.
