  • Our daughter Emily has been staying with us this spring, working from home, and made this short film of the orchard showing some work stacking cut hazel and watching the apple blossom develop. Also took a few pics of the night sky. More on / orchard.diaries

Watching this brings a wistful smile to my dial. I grew up on a 1 acre section in New Zealand and apple blossom always brought with it the expectation of a long, hot lazy summer. We live in the tropics now, so we don't see apple trees. We do get mangoes however.

Stephen will you be posting any harvest videos this year? My trees are giving extremely good crops (that of which the birds and wasps haven't eaten)

The last tree in bloom depicted could have been Rosemary Russet, the color & fullness are similar. I grafted Rosemary R. just two years ago - one to a separate stock and another to a standing tree. The branch on tree (Bardsey, BTW) pushed two spurs this year, which set several applets. If all goes well, this will mark my first taste of Rosemary Russet. May yours be a fruitful season!

Do you still send out scions? I saw a much older video of you collecting in FEB to send out to people. I've got several apple trees we'd like to try our hand at grafting eddible species to.

I haven’t for the last few years as I was traveling and the I’ll. I may do next year. If I do, it’s always in February/March and Europe only. I’ll post a video about it this coming winter. No guarantees- it takes a huge amount of time and I have much else to do.

I remember seeing one of your videos showing the seedlings coming up from the apple remains after being pressed for cider. You made the comment that you may trial some of them as grafts. Did that project eventuate? Unfortunately I can't find the original video. I for one like experimenting. You just don't know what may happen. That's half the fun. If it doesn't work, you still have gained experience.

HI. No, we didn't in the end keep any of them. There was no real need, and I had so many other projects on, that I didn't bother. Sorry!
