Breaks my heart. Cherish it, the church managed to turn Iceland into a culture devoid of any kind of dance, don't let the same happen to you through your own scorn.
It is an English tradition. It really depends on what type of Morris Dancing. There are different traditions within Morris such as Cotswold, Rapper, Border, Sword, Clog etc. I dance for a Cotswold side in the South East of England and we often dance out with Morris sides from a different tradition.
You'd be surprised to see that there is a very similar dance in Romania. It is called "calusari" and it is danced by a group of men, one of them is the leader, they have sticks and bells. You could find several variants on you tube, some of them highly coreographed and very spectacular. But the traditional dance is very similar to this
I live in Abingdon in Oxfordshire and every year these guys and gals come out it's very enjoyable to watch and they also get a free half of beer in every pub in the town awesome traditional dance to see live
One of the great things about the Morris is that sides like this can, and do, have fun at their own expense, there's loads of examples and its all part of The Morris. Every one of these dancers and people who do make things up for fun retain full respect for the Cecil Sharps and Lionel Bacons and wouldn't dream of mocking the written down dances. The Morris is in safe hands.
Love it as some one who grow up in the morris and folk culture I know what it is like and let me tell you morris dancers are hard core and they musicians can be very intimating
Teehee, that was fun. I just learned about Morris Dancing today on public radio in America. I'm enjoying the videos--thank you. For such a "simple" looking dance, it looks exhausting. :)
Oi baint not never seen 'at afore... Good old traditional Morris Men entertainment. As English men and women, we need to celebrate this more and encourage our youngsters to do the same. Always done with a pub within a few yards eh?
Protip for tourists: Morris Dancers are a common sight in English towns and cities during the spring and summer. If you enjoyed their performance, consider donatin a pound or two. Also, be aware that a folk superstition among Morris Dancers is that taking a person's photograph steals their soul, so please desist otherwise the dancers will be become very upset and angry.
Man, you Brits are so EXTREME!!! This video is so HARDCORE! I mean, it's so extreme you can almost forget that they're prancing around in matching outfits with hankies and bells...
What's the alternative? Stone-faced, emotionless men wearing colorless suits silently walking in a circle to the monotone drone of the single note on a quiet synthesizer? Can you think of something more "hardcore" than this that still serves the purpose of a fun dance? I know you're sooo hardcore for making a stupid comment about it youtube. God, go cry somewhere else lol.
Interesting discussion filling my Inbox tonight! Especially as its attached to a video of two guys hitting each other over the head with tea trays! :) Carry on.
If Morris Dancing confuses foreigners, especially the French, let's learn to enjoy it. In fact, to be truly English the more people take the piss out of it, the more we should support it. Mind you my ex was (is) a Morris Dancer - both children are scarred, especially my 30+year old son.
Uploads like this show how fun morris dancing can be and its good to watch as well. check out hunters moon morris and Beltane border morris as well. I love watching them dance whenever I see them when I am in England on holiday.
Love this! Send it all all my (former)Morris dancing friends (that includes me).re: Other comments- But Morris DID make the closing Olympic ceremonies! With Eric Idle AND Bollywood! Now you really can NOT not think of Monty Python when you watch this!
I saw the Morris dancing bit on Trigger Happy TV, but I had no idea there was actually such a thing as Morris Dancing. I think I prefer Dom Jolly's version though.
I am told (see comment near beginning of thread) it is the Wheatley beer tray dance. You can use any beer tray, not just ones from Wheatley, but you have to use your own heads. Good luck!
LOL reminds me of an episode of the generation game years ago when some bloke sang "wheel TRAAAIIIN" and hit himselfon the head with a tin tray bash bash bash bash
The Poles (PCB) cracked the intial code, which the Germans added to, so what they had was redundant. But they gave their findings to the British which helped them (Brits)crack later Enigma codes. So it was a Pole/Brit joint effort :)
It's just like my marriage - only it is just my wife who does the walloping. She thought the morris dancing shown here was pathetic - but then she would.
If all Morris dancing was like this (beating each other with solid objects), we Americans would absolutely love it. As it is, they've got too much bell-jingling going on.
NOOO I HAVE 2 DO MORRIS DANCING ON FRIDAY FOR A CLUB I ONLY DID IT FOR MY FRIEND SO SHE DONT FEEL LONLY I DID NOT KNOW IT WOULD BE THIS DANCING I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE JUST DANCING GOD HELP ME NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Breaks my heart. Cherish it, the church managed to turn Iceland into a culture devoid of any kind of dance, don't let the same happen to you through your own scorn.
Well said.
Look at the high knee action.
These are very fertile men!
England is in good hands.
Ah yeah eh?
@@jamesguschke9338hahaha
Clearly Not American! Our men play Video Games at that age 🎮😒
So if it's in good hands why then are Lancashire morris's banned? it's in jewish hands were fuc** d

@@matildas7542 Maybe it has some kind of Indo-European relation?

I think you've hit it right on the head!
If it brings a few smiles and nobody gets hurt it can't be so bad

This is one of my favourite Morris dances. It's great fun and I watch it often. Thanks.
don't knock Morris, did you see how high these guys are leaping? That is some level of athleticism and energy.
Indeed
Love it
as some one who grow up in the morris and folk culture I know what it is like and let me tell you morris dancers are hard core and they musicians can be very intimating
This is Warwick, England. I live in Warwick, by the castle. Sweet vid.
Teehee, that was fun. I just learned about Morris Dancing today on public radio in America. I'm enjoying the videos--thank you. For such a "simple" looking dance, it looks exhausting. :)
Awesome... Thank God this stuff still goes on.
Oh, thank you for sharing ... I sooo miss live morris dancing in NZ! Now I'm homesick.
For some reason, I can't NOT think of Monty Python when I see this.
Greetings from Greece 🇬🇷. We have in my country pagan dances that date thousands of years, very similar to this one...
Fun, very amusing and extremely entertaining. It's what I like about Morris Dancing. Thanks for posting Nick...
Now that...is what I call headbanging.
I think my favourite part is the cries of "Harder!!!" from the audience.
In Scotland there is a very similar dance much ingrained in folklore. Instead of using trays to greet your partner, the Scots use thistles.
Oi baint not never seen 'at afore... Good old traditional Morris Men entertainment.
As English men and women, we need to celebrate this more and encourage our youngsters to do the same.
Always done with a pub within a few yards eh?
Ah, the Wheatley Tray dance. Well done dog rose.
Now I know what's on the programme for my future wedding :]
Not the dance form, just this particular instance. They're beating the crap out of each other! How can anyone dislike that?
Wonderful English tradition ❤
Excellent!
Fantastic. So enjoyed this. Great leaping!

do this in a rugby game !

Brilliant long may it continue
Hahahaha love it ... concussion by Wheatley Beer Tray Dancing!!
I love watching Morris dancing!
Interesting discussion filling my Inbox tonight! Especially as its attached to a video of two guys hitting each other over the head with tea trays! :) Carry on.
They'd be great with Zulu Chief
(Also known as the Regimental Tray Song)
They did some, and everyone remembers it, but the most important stuff was done at Bletchley Park.
Love it!
Cannot stop laughing at this. Genius.
That is my uncle David
I've always managed to get out of this one... cheers Dave & Will!
weh have to do tht at guides tonight
Love this.. ❤

Extreme morrissing is so violent for no reason
I love this

This was awesome. It would've been a killer, though, if at the end of the dance they would both, in unison, hit the violinist's head :))))))
I saw the Morris dancing bit on Trigger Happy TV, but I had no idea there was actually such a thing as Morris Dancing.
I think I prefer Dom Jolly's version though.
It doesn't get more British than that! well except for cracking the enigma code and saving the world, but this is more fun.
Idea for a new extreme sport: this dance routine but replace the foil plates with frying pans. Last man standing wins
Filmed at Warwick Folk Fest
A miracle - a contribution from a Blackheath man that doesn't start with a bad joke .... !!
Their capers are really high
This is as 'extreme' as the British get...:)
GREAT BROTHERS!!!!
jolly good manly sport!
Chris Lewis-Jones How ever the collusion was for the nobles[sic or Sick] sake damned be all else
Looks like fun. ..If not slightly headache inducing !
I like this.
Fukin Magnificent!
this was great
That's awesome.
You should see the version where they use baseball bats with bells glued to them....
I am told (see comment near beginning of thread) it is the Wheatley beer tray dance. You can use any beer tray, not just ones from Wheatley, but you have to use your own heads. Good luck!
Is the point to see who gets the worst concussion?
I.... actually think i enjoyed this morris.
Doctor!
Its a shame that Englands got only 1 real surviving folk tradition and everyone mocks it.
Maypoles, hobby horses, longsword dances, rapper dances, molly dancing, at least three types of morris, clog dancing......
LOL reminds me of an episode of the generation game years ago when some bloke sang "wheel TRAAAIIIN" and hit himselfon the head with a tin tray bash bash bash bash
It was mule train
.
The Bretons have something similar as do the Germans...ask them about the May Baum (May Pole)...we need to learn our roots.
awesome!!
Can't.stop.laughing.
@jtchivers If the media made Morris dancing look cool more people would enjoy it. Most people just do what a celeb magazine tells them.
The Poles (PCB) cracked the intial code, which the Germans added to, so what they had was redundant. But they gave their findings to the British which helped them (Brits)crack later Enigma codes. So it was a Pole/Brit joint effort :)
wow read about morris dancing in a book and looks to be quite interesting here lol
(this ones a bit repetitive but funny)
It seem´s this dance could cause better headache than alcohol if you spend the night with it!?
FUCK YEAH!!!!
I have danced with this Morris team, but got knocked out in the third round
It's just like my marriage - only it is just my wife who does the walloping. She thought the morris dancing shown here was pathetic - but then she would.
Sick!
@richard1973 Yes, I agree completely, Richard.
i love that they are being heckled by old men lol
If all Morris dancing was like this (beating each other with solid objects), we Americans would absolutely love it. As it is, they've got too much bell-jingling going on.
THAT'S MY HORSE
Didn't realize that Morris dancing was a real thing.
Why is all this hitting necessary in life? Ouch! :) Beautiful capers though!
also known as foreplay...
Harder!!!!
i thought morris dancing was somit else
so dangerous...
LOL
👾
Where abouts is this?
If your culture does not appreciate alcohol there is no way you will appreciate this.
So, who had to pick up the tab?
Where is this??
Aye
@kirilmv
So why is it necessary to insult the English dancers to promote Calusul?
@nGrEng Its not fucking Glasgow, thats for sure.......... lol
Morroccan Roll
HARDER!!!!!
One of the big problems with English folk music is that many of the people in it moan that no one takes them seriously enough? I wonder why!
@M3ADXD Do you know why they wear bells round their ankles? So blind people can run and hide when they hear em coming lol
