I teach local history, but my grade level does it because I’m such an enthusiast. I have a close tie to a local museum, the National Ranching Heritage Center, and for 23 years having my students participate in a huge Christmas event, creating a living history scene in period costume.
We use traveling trunks from local museums, too.
We choose the local ag history museum for our one-per-year field trip. I value the history of OUR area. I see that love of our history in my students’ eyes. They love it!
However, even though we are rich in amazing museums in Lubbock, TX, I don’t see very many teachers and schools taking full advantage of them, sadly.

There’s SO much that goes into setting a school calendar. I’ve been on the committee making those decisions for about 15 years in a very large district. Some new twist comes in every year.
One of the main things that govern start date, ending date, and Christmas break dates is this statistic. If you have two days of school in a partial week, families don’t take it seriously and just keep their kids home or plan a trip. It takes 3 days or more.
For this calendar, with Christmas on a Monday, we either needed to be ack up for a whole week off before Christmas and return right after New Year’s Day; or school closer to Christmas and have a full week off (actually more) into Jan. We had several professionals/parents on the committee who had a mew perspective for us. Many parents have jobs with heavier work loads finishing up their year. They said if school stops early, they wouldn’t be able to spend a lot of that time home with their kids. They’d either be home alone or in daycare. And many families can’t afford daycare, so many more unattended kids. However, if we stopped closer to Christmas and left them more time off in January, the parents had more availability in Jan.
Even though we teachers would like the opposite option, we listened. We are 1000+ school employees. There were many, many thousand parents represented. We also put out two options on a public survey and they overwhelmingly voted to have school until closer to Christmas.
We went to school through Dec. 21st.

My area DOES do local history. All of 4th grade is dedicated to it. I do live in VA though and a lot of American history starts here. We have Jamestown which is the first permanent settlement, colonial Williamsburg, major battles of the Revolutionary and Civil Wars were fought here, and the first 5 Presidents were from here.

The last school where I taught, had carpeting in 99% of the classrooms which had gum which was ground into the carpeting. I taught 20:57 there for 5 years and that horrid carpeting was torn up in the 3rd year that I taught there. At that point, the floors were concrete ( which was painted grey). It was SUCH an upgrade!!! Based on the color scheme of the school it was obvious that very little had been done to improve/ upgrade the interior of the school. However, the ABSOLUTE worst thing was that the first year that I taught there, the fire alarm did not work!! Not only was that illegal it was also ( potentially) VERY dangerous for both staff and students!!! Elizabeth Goodrich, Texas

My school is title 1, built in 1970. The county has been slowly renovating the schools to give them ealls…we have been put back three times to get ours. We have partitioned pods made if fabric dividers. A kid knocked one over this year in an aggressive outburst. If it gets pushed back again next year, I’m rallying the parents against the school board

They put a portable at my elementary when I was in 4th grade
I now have a kindergartner there, it’s still there, the remnants of the hopscotch courts it covered still on the edges, and they’ve constructed ramps from the doors that go to it to the door of it, so when taking kids to it they don’t take a left and run to the playground.

We don't need new schools -- fix the ones we have got and combine virtual education with brick and mortar. We are not preparing our learners for the future. No need to create more schools for student to be bored in. Between the ones we have, virtual and outside activities, I believe we can get the job done and done better. And yes I teach virtually!!! I have also been saying this for 30 years we don't need to fix an archaic system we need a complete shift in thinking about how we educate going forward. Thank you.

I’d be inclined to agree but all the schools in the district I taught in were loaded with portables. And even those were beyond capacity. My school was designed for 1800 cap, they allowed 2400, and ended up stopping all new at 2700. That’s not sustainable.

Brutal. I was always on the fence about this… I didn’t like it pre break but they would do it immediately post break and I thought that was even worse.

Also, to the news segment, while it’s obviously a joke, there is something to be said about whether the teacher does respect the parents, considering the joke was poking at what is a very real fear to some of those parents.
It was a joke, obviously no one is trying to turn kids gay via public school, but yeah. Maybe don’t get caught riffing on the parent’s in a shirt that links directly where to call your boss?
