My great Uncle served in a sherman in WWII and again in Korea. I never realized how bad it was for him till seeing this movie. I remember being a kid and hearing him scream at night sometimes, scared me to death. he'd wake up and get upset apologizing for it. Wish I had understood this before he died.

My great grandpa road in the second armor with Patton and landed on D-Day in a sherman tank. He was the commander of his tank. His tank lit on fire after being hit by grenades and he saved his hoal crew by pulling them out of the tank. He then after the war became a fire man, never got to meet the man.

As a retired Abrams commander, I would like to say I am sorry for your losses and I salute these brave heros for not only their demotions of duty, but the sacrifices they made to protect us and the world. May these men find peace in heaven and guide us to a peaceful world. I know what it's like to watch or hear about someone you care for pass, when me and my brother got in our Abrams...we knew one wouldn't make it. He was the driver and a good one too, but when we were ambushed about a month into our deployment, he stricken by a rocket propelled grenade. I could only watch as he died in my arms. After that I not only used the Abrams in combat, but also as a way to transport and protect injured soldiers.

People forget how much this war affected the world. My grandpa? An SSI who managed to pull his love out of Poland before her entire family was annihilated while her relatives here in the states refused to believe "it was that bad.". And in a time with an all-volunteer defense force, its hard to grasp the fact that the guy you sat next to in math class would be drafted, handed a weapon, and told to rush a beach. We owe these men and women everything. God help us if we should ever forget.

He kinda didn't see much action though, he is navy, rule out all action unless your ship gets wrecked. Fuckin the ladies and sailing the waves isn't exactly a "great challenge". Now that we are done with my navy hate moving onto his rank/post timing.
So he sailed on Shaw without incident on convoy missions, In 35 he gets AC command which means action is effectively over.
So he mean by that quote "You civilian drafts go charge the enemy lines under bombardment and the air force do bombing raids under heavy AA fire, while I'm just chilling here back in my tasty command ship and pose at banquets in my parade clothing."
Fucking navy officers are shit. I respect the discipline and hardships of naval life okay, but I completely detest how they see themselves as the "sacrificing ones" while they barely do the dangerous military jobs compared to Army or old Airforce.

There are always less people aware of the unrealistic that a movie is than those who only wants to see things exploding. For example : "T34" is a good movie, but also unrealistic. "Das Boot" is realistic and the best movie about submarines ever filmed. "U571" is a total crap... "Fury" is funny to see...but unrealistic. It is just like the food at McDonnals...

Fury for me was a fantastic film despite the handful of glaring inaccuracies put in there in order to add to the drama. As a tank crewman myself I appreciated a film which focused around the trials and tribulations of a tank crew, the nature of which is always very close knit due to the close proximity in which you live with each other. Also, I've often felt before that tanks are looked at by both the masses and individuals in the military as just that, tanks. Because we, the organic component are not as visible and in some instances totally invisible when the tank is closed down, it takes the human factor away from them. Whilst this is useful in as much as the enemy cannot see a tank crew panic in the same way they could see dismounted infantry move and react to their actions, it also means that through history we've not been considered as much as the infantry. The same could, of course, be said for many other subunit types and branches.
So yeah, all in all, an excellent film and a fantastic musical score to match. The music in various parts I'd say add as much gravity to what's going on screen as the narrative.

@@bala8740 I think the point is that ideals are immaterial, but to put them into practice often requires real violence to make others comply to them. As in, just wanting Germany to give up their ideals peacefully won't happen just because you wish it so. In this case the citizens killed themselves rather than deciding to surrender and live under American ideals and occupation. That's what he was teaching Norman. You will have to kill them to stop them, even if it goes against your ideals.

Great uncle was a Sherman tanker. Tank was destroyed and he barely had enough time to get out of it. Body was full of shrapnel till the end of his days 50 years later. The blast from the panzer nearly killed him. Lost his best friend at the time in that blown Sherman. He couldn't talk about it much.

  • @kaziulaz

An unappreciated and for many misunderstood movie.... Good music, movie, story. this is 45min is circle again again again ... like quote in midle of movie .... " where you go ? ...size next city ...and next city (we will lost our mens, you lost yours) until your pride will broke and you give up.....dealt with lost war. Good base for discusions. I am 30 years old. I did not cry when they died and at the funerals of my close relatives. But with great events, they have a hundred times larger scales, like here in movies and music like this one. I think what I watch and listen to. He realizes what the war brings and what different scenarios are written and what despite the wars in the past, people do each other more or less consciously. They are wasting so much effort that all those fighting in the past have suffered, and now instead of doing everything not to waste it, they do a lot of mindless, unnecessary, stupid, harmful, short-term things or not benefiting in the long run. What you can not do now in time of peace and need, would be useful to do for the greater good .... what, what behaviors lead to war. What kind of sacrifice soldiers carry as an order or with free will. And the throat squeezes and tears come out of my eyes. I am more or less trying to understand, empathize or even identify with events.

This was such an amazing movie. Sure, there were some inaccuracies, but the feelings that you got from it (and the phenomenal music) are sublime.
In my opinion, the thing that makes a war movie good is the emotions that are conveyed. You will never truly understand what your forefathers, fathers, and brothers went through, but to just comprehend it a bit shows the horrors of war.

This movie was based on 2 actual events cobbled into one movie. One in WW1 and the WW2. "War Daddy" was the real nick name of the tank leader Lafayette G. Pool and his crew. His crew were veterans of many battles and their actual tank was called "In the mood". Brad Pitt plays Pool.
The second actual event was a WW1 tank that got stuck in a ditch in no mans land after a tank assault. The crew were surrounded by German soldiers and the Germans attacked this single tank for more than 3 days. Day and night the crew fought the Germans off. Every assault were repelled by the crew. The crew did make it back into friendly lines after fighting for so long, they realized no help was coming. The tanks nickname was "Frey Bentos"
Fury is basically these two real events.
It's not just a movie. These things did happen.

This film has one of the best character development ever, Norman a young man who was thrown into a tank and was not ready to kill but quickly learned to do otherwise, he even became the first man to volunteer standing his ground with the Sergeant (initiating everyone else to do the same). By doing this, he made himself and all the tank crew a warhero in the end.
The music hits hard at the end of the movie...
