    Jack, I have watched a lot of the Tube channels about logging, tree work, or just saw work in general, and you are the best with a saw that I have seen. There is something special about watching a master of his trade at work. Thanks for the videos!

    Jack, I'm so proud of you for not being ashamed of evoking the name of Jesus! I too am a logger of 50+ years and a pastor. I cut all hardwoods in the mountains of SW Va. You and I have sawdust in our veins and Jesus in our heart. Would love to meet you. I wait till we get home. Maybe I'll shoot you an email. Take care brother and may God keep His Hand on you. Hey Jack I see you run a lot of different equipment, do you have any opinion on Tsumura bars? I started out using Stihl lightweight and then switched to Tsumura. For me the Tsumura LW bars seem to be tougher than Stihls and also they are considerably cheaper. Thanks for the great videos I have learned a lot from watching you

    • @hotsaws101
      @hotsaws101  4 года назад +1

      Amateur Logger hi.
      Picked up my first 6 in '99/'00. Still have most of them. But, most of them are clapped out.
      Heard of guys having issues with the tips blowing out. Personally, it has never been an issue.
      I think that the rails are harder. So they seem to last a little longer.
      They are a little tougher from the design. But, they also weigh noticeably more.
      Trade-offs, always trade-offs in this life.
      Thanks for watching.

    Great video! I appreciate the explanation of the face cut, let's us know just what you are trying to make it do. Do reds always get bucked in saw log lengths? With a 40 being the preferred long log? Thanks for sharing.

    • @hotsaws101
      @hotsaws101  6 лет назад +1

      Jacob hi. They can also be for fence boards but those are "saw log" lengths as well. I have never seen the cutting prescription in redwood be anything but some sort of saw log dimension. Down to 6' though. Generally 40' is the longest. Preferred shortys have varied over the years - 16 or 20. Sometimes the diameter dictates the length - both long and short logs. Sometimes on certain properties the total volume dictates the length as well. Nothing over ~ 3000 boards for example. So the answer on your second question is sometimes. You may have to buck a 36' or 32' log, or even a 20, if at 40' the diameter on the scaling end is 40" or larger for example. But wait, there is more....
      Clear as Mudd?
      Haven't you worn that "481" out yet?
      Thanks for watching.

  • @Slippindisc
    @Slippindisc 3 года назад

    Is this piece work? Contract? How’s that work? I understand measuring the lengths of the logs you’re bucking but I keep wondering if it’s just for your own personal curiosity that you keep measuring the diameter while you’re bucking

    • @hotsaws101

      MrAdvantage1 hi. Yes. Yes. You spend a life time accumulating knowledge, try and do good work, try and be a good steward. Hopefully, you get a good reputation and an opportunity to work for some really great guy (me in this situation). Get your TO license & the necessary insurance. Then with any luck, and God smiles upon you, a call comes in.
      I get paid by the board foot. I need to know the job total in order to submit a bill. With Sargent's though, some of the time, I just wait until they get the accumulated volume shipped from all the scale slips from the loads delivered.
      Thank for watching.

    so whats the special sauce to get my 064 to rev like that? currently its a dog compared to the 066... also and I'm sure you've been asked this a hundred times, whats your favorite, Husqvarna, Stihl, Sachs/Dolmar/Makita? Since you've ran em all, but your currently playing with an ancient 064, curious mind wants to know.

      northman logging special sauce ? Why that wood be hot-sauce !

    • @hotsaws101
      @hotsaws101  6 лет назад +2

      northman hi. A trip to the operating table in my shop.
      I use the best saw I have for the particular bar length that will be the main choice for the strip. This is considering the strip location (i.e. coast, inland), average size, and what we will be slaying as well. In redwood country (yarder block) if you are running a 32" bar you better have a 36" or running a 36" better have a 42" at your camp (gas & oil ) for the just in case that always seems to happen. Seen where you are bucking with between a 42" and 60" bar because the ground is so gnarly.
      There is nothing wrong with the power to weight ratio of an 064. Inboard clutch & pretty straight intake tract - light years a head in some aspects. Fairly early serial number too.
      Had my 281 on special assignment. Runs better than my 064. Stay tuned....
      Thanks for watching.

      and how much would you charge to get mine running happy? rebuilt oem p+c and bearings, but aftermarket italian crank, gyppo modded muffler, and goofy 064 intake plate. runs... just doesn't have the zip I'm looking for.

    On a 36 inch bar what would u prefer a skip tooth or full comp? On a 65cc saw

    • @hotsaws101
      @hotsaws101  6 лет назад

      Alex hi. It depends on a few factors. I like comp chain a lot because it doesn't get wood dull as fast and will still cut pretty good when it does. It's smooth as well. More "tooths" to sharpen though. 3' bars are usually the transition length. Maybe a skip chain, maybe a comp chain, maybe a semi-skip chain. I run skip on my 38"s and up usually.
      For me the displacement is not a consideration. Chain size is though.
      Thanks for watching.

    Do you prefer Stihl over Huskeys?

    • @hotsaws101
      @hotsaws101  4 года назад +1

      Roger hi. It depends upon a few factors. The class size and bar length are a couple of the considerations. Application is another.
      Part of the trouble is that there aren't any direct correlations between cc and weight.
      One or the other is usually down on power while at the same time down on weight.
      I appreciate a lot of different features about saws. I don't think its possible to say that a certain brand is better. Also, it cyclical. For a few years one brand will be ahead with a few "new and improved" models. A few years later, the tide will change and it's now the other.
      My perspective is only from a production faller's position using the professional grade machines though.
      Thanks for watching.

    Do you EVER have one fall off of your intended line???

    • @hotsaws101
      @hotsaws101  3 года назад +1

      Joshuaunlimitedmlk hi. Falling timber is not like, well let's say, drafting. Any job, with any type of writing of stick, computer, adding mo-chine, etc. can be corrected, altered, changed.
      Once the holding wood breaks, it's going where it's going.
      With Old Growth Reds (the bigger ones especially) if they don't START moving the right direction "oncest" they start moving it is a das-aster. Sometimes they will go off even when you have them started the right direction.
      Any faller that has not missed the shot a bunch of times over the years has either:
      Only fell a few trees, period.
      But wait,,, there's more...
      Only fell "timber" on a Christmas tree farm.
      Only felled trees in an open field.
      Only felled perfectly, defect free trees.
      Only felled a few perfectly straight trees.
      Only felled trees on a flat.
      Only fell trees that were not limb bound.
      Only fell tree that were perfectly balanced limb weight wise.
      Thinking your picking up what I'm laying down.
      So, I've missed a lot in the 4 + decades I've tried to hit the shot perfectly.
      Thanks for watching.
