I've seen Otello many times. This in my opinion is the way it should be played. It isn't just a song for the lead baritone. It is a lynch pin for the dramatic situation. Kaufmann shows himself here as a master actor. Usually no one remembers the Cassio. Once the day after I saw an Otello at SF Opera I happened to meet the guy who played Cassio the night before. As he came through the front door of the bank I announced in a loud voice "Why it's the opera star - David Hall Lundquist !". He was thrilled. I don't remember what ever happened to him again. But that day he was happy.
To those who say this is Stephen Costello, I can say, as a fan of both singers, that this is definitely Kaufmann. (Kaufmann made his US debut in the U.S. - in Chicago as CASSIO - in that same year.) Also, although somewhat over the top, this is a very original, imaginative and entertaining version, not to mention fabulously sung by Jonas. This might be a definitive example of "there are no small parts only small actors" (Stanislavisky).
I was amused by this odd video soI looked up the review. September 2001 LYRIC OPERA REVIEW said "The other vocal pleasure came from the evening's Cassio, Jonas Kaufmann. He is a young German tenor, and his liquid voice and spotless musicianship balanced exuberance with self-control. We shall hear more from him, I am sure.” Another review said, "The ascending German tenor Jonas Kaufmann was a stunning Cassio." How about that!!!? I didn't think he was stunning yet but he was a scream - funny!
This was 5 years ago and there are no doubts that he will never do the role again. Not because his voice is too large for the role, but because the role is too small for him. His next role in this opera, but not so soon, will be Otello.
@Barone Vitellio Scarpia I've heard rumours that some people couldn't hear him when he sang in Munich. I think his voice is small, but not only that, he too often takes to heart Florez's teachings, Lol.
I think this is terrific. It's great to hear a fuller voice as Cassio. Dramatically it makes sense too because he is a political threat to Otello and this kind of Cassio believably can create jealousy in Otello. To have light lyric tenors do this role is not good for the scene.
How the hell did Montano manage to be wounded by a drunk, rambling guy like this? I mean, he can barely stand-- if at all--, so how can he successfully duel a veteran of the Moorish Wars?
Stephan Costello is a great new Cassio with beautiful lyric tenor voice and great look! Kaufmann's voice is too dramatic for the role of young and inexperienced boy
So your definition of 'artist' is 'Shouts all the time as loud as he can without considering in what situation this puts his fellow singers?' He can do that in solo arias, but in a minor role like Cassio it's not his role to outsing Iago or Otello, even if he CAN do it.
i think he is trying to sing bigger than it's means. but its not a bad voice its just not great. id rather listen to a smaller voiced cassio than a big overacting one. overall? okay!
He isn't supposed to steal the show though. Why didn't he tone down his voice a bit? This is like Mime shouting down Siegfried or something like this- no one wants it.

Tellement jeune et déjà beaucoup de talent !!!

A role which he is not suited to.
@Barone Vitellio Scarpia I've heard rumours that some people couldn't hear him when he sang in Munich. I think his voice is small, but not only that, he too often takes to heart Florez's teachings, Lol.
@Barone Vitellio Scarpia I meant he likes his pianissimo, so that no one can hear him!
@@xxsaruman82xx87 Kaufmann sounds louder than Florez live. I've heard both live.
Er wurde ein wunderbarer Othello🎉❤❤

Yes: Iago is such a traitor that he decided to betray the singing.
Fantástico Casio,
Jonas magnífico como Cassio ♥
I cannot wait until Kaufmann sings Otello.
Could be the best since Del Monaco.
ITS HAPPENING NOW AT THE ROYAL OPERA HOUSE! Critics are RAVING on his success!!!!
esplendido
Madonna! Iago è ubriaco o fuori di testa.
Cassio è semplicemente magnifico !
Bravo Kaufmann !
+bodiloto Questo commento è un po "cattivello"...

carissimo,perché non vieni à Parigi?...
questi giorni canta Kaufmann!...
buon ascolto !
cordialità .
Where on earth did this take place? Ifeel for Otello who had to come on after this excellent performance.
yes, he has too much voice, very soon he will be a Great Othello.
11 years after you wrote this comment, he released one of the best recorded Otellos in recent memory
How the hell did Montano manage to be wounded by a drunk, rambling guy like this? I mean, he can barely stand-- if at all--, so how can he successfully duel a veteran of the Moorish Wars?
The baritone is horrible.
2 piasecznik: well, then there is a casting problem, IMHO. If Mime has loud enough voice to do it, why should he hide the instrument?
Jago is Jean-Philippe Lafont. I Think...
And Galuzin was a great Otello!!!!
Ahahahahha
Stealing the snow even back then.
The Iago is terrible
Stephan Costello is a great new Cassio with beautiful lyric tenor voice and great look!
Kaufmann's voice is too dramatic for the role of young and inexperienced boy
No. Kaufmann's voice is ideal for Cassio.
Beurk horrible Iago. Kaufmann is superlative as Cassio, but I think he is wise to wait before he sings Otello...
that is stephen costello, Jonas Kaufmann voice i would recognize anywhere
where is jonas kaufmann here?
So your definition of 'artist' is 'Shouts all the time as loud as he can without considering in what situation this puts his fellow singers?' He can do that in solo arias, but in a minor role like Cassio it's not his role to outsing Iago or Otello, even if he CAN do it.

Tutto trash. Arrgh.
i think he is trying to sing bigger than it's means. but its not a bad voice its just not great. id rather listen to a smaller voiced cassio than a big overacting one. overall? okay!
Kaufmann?? No creo que sea él. I don't think this was Kaumann.
He isn't supposed to steal the show though. Why didn't he tone down his voice a bit? This is like Mime shouting down Siegfried or something like this- no one wants it.
pessimo jago
