My dad passed on the 17th of April. He struggled with depression. He started rolling his cigarettes because he couldn’t afford to buy packs of Camels anymore. He was beat down by life but was always so positive and uplifting in every conversation we had. Listening to this song really makes me feel like I’m speaking to him and resonating with how he felt at the end of his life. He was only 49. RIH Daddy.

Damn I can relate to this, I lost my father on the 16th of jan 2019. He was also 49 and had depression but never spoke of it. He always used to smoke camels until life took a turn. Moved to a cheaper brand and at times he rolled his own.

I’ve been struggling with depression and yesterday I decided to be a secret undying optimist no matter what happens. Even when I feel like the world is burning down around me, I’ll still look for the beauty in the flames.
I doubt anyone cares, but I was the closest I've ever been to offing myself last year. Matt helped me push through that shit. If you're anywhere close to that, reach out to someone. Literally anyone. You'll be surprised how many people care about you. There are a lot of people who don't make it through that alone. It's hard. It can get better, though! ❤❤

I had a friend. We practically grew up together. He was always in my classes, through preschool, primary, secondary and sixth form. We sometimes spent time apart in our own respective friend groups, but we always found our way back to one another. When we did, we'd be so inseparable that people thought we were dating. One time, the others in our class were convinced that we dated, broke up and got back together again all in the span of a year, assuming from our moments of distance. I had once developed a crush on him, but it hadn't lasted. He wasn't a friend, he was a brother. Another part of myself. I couldn't imagine dating him. He was always great at Mathematics, while I was better at English. We used to teach each other over facetime late at night. The running joke in our Math class was to listen to Heart 80s, so we put it on in the background of our study sessions. It didn't last. That was when we listened to Bank On The Funeral for the first time. We both were familiar with Matt Maeson and on the first listen, the songs kind of blurred into the background. We liked the album (but weren't actually LISTENING to it) so we stuck it on loop and continued working. At some point into that night, we started having deep conversations. We got onto the topic of the future. He told me he was scared. I wanted to ask him what he was scared of, but somehow I already understood. I thought I did, at least.

Beggar song was on at that point. There was such a profound moment of silence between us and this song was playing clearer than ever in my mind. He started crying first and it set me off. We said goodnight after that moment, and we listened to this album for the rest of our study sessions until our A Level exams. We're finally separated now. We both go to different universities (him out of the country) and as much as I try to stay in touch, it's not the same as it once was. Now I realise that I didn't actually understand what he was scared of. He was scared of the future because he didn't think he was independent enough to go out of the country on his own. I was scared because I knew I was going to lose him. That profound difference makes me wonder if we were as close as I thought we were, or if the guy was just super great at hiding his true feelings. Either way, I'm still holding onto hope that this time apart has been just like all our others. That we will find our way back somehow. This song will always remind me of that moment, of our time together and of him.

Yo my brother had cancer and was in a coma when he released this. I ended up meeting another young girl in the hospital who had cancer and had her leg amputated and she died last October from cancer, and honestly this dude helped me get through it. Matt Maeson you're fucking amazing and I strive to be like you, addictions and all.
