CANON R5 HOT SHOE REPAIR!!

  • In this video, I'm walking through some steps to show you how to open up your Canon EOS R5 mirrorless camera, and tighten up the Hot Shoe screws if you have a loose plate and experiencing connection issues with your flashes or transmitters. This is a VERY common issue which also impacts other R body cameras such as the EOS R6. I know other photographers with the EOS R6 cameras with the same issue.
    Yes, you can send your bodies to Canon to have this fixed, but this video is for anyone who may be in a bind and either doesn't want to shell out $500 for repairs or doesn't have the time to wait around for shipping to and from a Canon Repair Center.
    I own two Canon R5's and primarily use them for weddings and engagement sessions. Over the course of a year, the plates on both cameras were extremely loose and I started worrying that they would break off.
    All you need to do this is some patience, organization, a screw driver and some Loctite threadlocker. It's pretty straightforward and easy to do!
    Full disclaimer, I am NOT a Canon Repair tech, and cannot be held accountable for what happens to your equipment. Please note, if you're attempting this, you're doing it at your own risk and may void any Canon Warranty that's left on your equipment.

    Bernard, you are simply the best. I have gone through so many videos trying to get it until I stumbled into yours to find out that you are the best of all. Your strength is your patience in explaining the procedure. Thanks a bunch!

    Bernard! Thank you so much for making this video. You saved me time and money. I appreciate all the little things you said in between the tutorial. It showed that you’re like all of us; not having all the technical skills, but willing to try. I repaired my camera last night. I will admit I had some trouble with the view finder connection. My first attempt it wasn’t in all the way so it was glitchy. I took a pause to clear my mind then I tried again and it worked!! Thank you again.

    Thank you everyone! I’m glad many of you found the video helpful! I apologize if I never had a chance to respond to all of the comments / questions. I’m not a “RUclipsr” per se… Just a a photographer who was attempting this and thought recording the process would help others. I may consider doing more videos on things, but for now, please “like, subscribe and share” I guess - it would be greatly appreciated. 😊😊

    Bernard, thanks so much for making this video! I have a wedding coming up in a few weeks and I was worried about having to send it off to Canon, not to mention how much a repair like that would cost. I was thinking it would run about $400. Thanks to your video I was able to do it in under 2 hours. I took my time and used a magnetic mat and labeled everything. The first time I attached the camera back and hooked up the viewfinder I popped a battery in there to make sure it worked before finishing the assembly. To my dismay the EVF did not work. I had to take it apart again, only took a few minutes, and found out I did not insert the ribbon cable for the EVF all the way into the slot. When it came time to put the metal plates back in that go over the card slots I was tripped up because I couldn’t remember how the thin metal strip and cover plate were positioned. You might have corrected yourself later on in the video, but initially you put the thin metal strip in incorrectly. I had to rewind to your disassembly to see how it goes. Basically the squarish metal tab slides underneath the chassis. If you didn’t position it correctly during reassembly its an easy fix. Your video saved me and the flash is tight as a drum (for now). I did use blue lock-tite on the four screws. Thanks again so much! Difficulty level for me was a 2 out of 10. Just took my time but it was way easier than I expected!

    For someone who has never done a RUclips video before you did good. Really good! Not having to repair the hot shoe on my R5 yet, this video is a definite keeper, should I ever have to refer to it in the future. I do have a couple of concerns though. As a recent Biomedical Equipment Technologist (now retired), I have to ask, were you using an antistatic mat (with grounded wrist strap)? Static will destroy circuit boards (been there, done that). You also mentioned using glue on the threads. I was thinking that a medium threadlocker such as LOCTITE Item 38132 (blue medium strength "non permanent" threadlocker) might be a better choice. After all, you never know when those screws might need to be removed, for a future problem, and glue would be a little too permanent. Just a thought. Again, great "instructional" video!!!

    How stupid of xanon to let their engineers to do the screws the other way around. The screw heads used to be on the top and you didn't need to brrak the camera apart to tighten them.

    Hey yesterday I broke my cfx press SD card door. I was going to take it to my local shop and they wanted $800. Yes that's not a typo $800! Since I'm poor I will be doing this job myself and I was wondering do I need to take the whole thing apart to switch out the door? Or can I just loosen the screws in that area around 14:15?

    • @fraychild
      @fraychild  Год назад

      Hi, I never had to replace the door by itself, but I would say you might not have to disassemble the whole thing just for the door. Good luck with that, $800 sounds insane!
