True the original series does do a few things better but brotherhood had an incredible plot, a plot I've never seen before. • @user-sl7ym1zq3n
    @user-sl7ym1zq3n 4 года назад +58

I think Brotherhood was a better overall and well-rounded series BUT, I think there are some strong points in FMA I would have loved to seen in Brotherhood!
    1. I wish Lust's character was in Brotherhood longer. I loved her subplot.
    2. I think FMA did a better job of explaining the backstory of a homunculus (created from a failed transmutation) that Brotherhood lacked in. (Thus the amazing Lust subplot of being an Ishvalen woman in love with Scar's brother)
    3. SHAO TUCKER!!!! FMA spent so much longer building up the Nina story arc!!! So that when *it* happened I was genuinely surprised and terrified! Versus Brotherhood just spent 1 episode building the tension. The same principle I think goes for movies where you need TIME for the audience to develop a fondness and investment in the characters.
    4. I liked that FMA introduced Bradley as innocuous, and then the reveal that he is an evil homunculus was more surprising. Brotherhood, literally episodes 1 or 2 just revealed Bradley's true form.
    5. I liked Scar's tenderness in FMA. The moment that he first looks into Ed's eyes and notices he is different really stuck with me. I think that it develop's Scar's motives more than a raging killer because he's not! He's someone who was deeply hurt. Also the "creator/destroyer" part of Scar's arm in Brotherhood just seemed excessive to me.
    6. HUGHES! Same with Shao Tucker, that Brotherhood only gave us a moment to get to know Hughes before he was killed off. FMA really spent a long time developing our fondness for him. Upon analyzing the whole timeline of Brotherhood, I really think they could have killed Hughes a whole season later. He's such an important part of the storyline and what drives Mustang, I think that it would have been great for him to do more good when he was alive (and thus increase the emotional intensity of this major turning point and driving point in the whole story.)
I do think Brotherhood was better, but I think it would have truly been top tier if it spent a little more time sizzling on these important points!

While the emotional moments were undoubtably done better in FMA 2003, I just feel that Brotherhood told the story a lot better. Also, it had much cleaner animation and designs. I'd say Brotherhood is ultimately better, but fans of FMA should check out both shows because both have their strong points.

Also the story seems far more complete and sensible in Brotherhood. The final villain being an old lady and the other side of the gate being our world was very weird.
The fact that nobody outside of Eds father had a connection to her was weird too. From episode 35 on the show was very good, but weird.

I always thought the anime and manga were written differently on purpose entirely by the same author because they were so cool and it really tripped me out how the same characters were in it but what they said and did and how the behaved either had small differences or were way different and some characters were missing from one version. I'd always been rather impressed with that and how it made reading theanga and watching the anime both have different and original things in them. Now ten years later the two versions have merged in my mind and I can't remember which was which and many details which makes it more interesting to think about than run of the mill copied from the source animes.

FMA is not a FAN FICTION just because it wasn't a direct adaptation of the manga from beginning to end. FMA was adapted while the manga series was still ongoing and even though she did not write the script, Arakawa-Sensei actively participated in the production of FMA. Also, she requested for a different ending for FMA as she don't want the same ending for both manga and anime. But FullMetal being a great story, it isn't a wonder that a full adaptation of the manga will be animated and thus FMAB was born. It is your personal preference which of the two adaptation you like. I, myself like FMA because it carries nostalgia of my childhood.

True, there’s no heavy handed villain trying to force him to do it, but it’s still presented as a choice between other people’s lives and the life of his brother. In fact, FMAB puts far more emphasis on human lives producing the stones, and Ed never uses one without great consideration. Even what he gets a hold of one finally, they still don’t use it since human lives went into making it.

I've seen both anime but I like how FMA does the first 10 eps especially the Nina eps that had much more emotional impact.
Instead of sticking to one or the other. That way you get the darkness and emotional weight of the original and still keep to the manga's canon by going to Brotherhood after episode 10.

  • @deykuzor

Honestly, I think the nuance behind it is "do you like a deep and complex narrative that occasionally falls flat on its face?" or "do you like a young man's coming of age story in a consistent, romantic, fantastical world?" Because everything else remains pretty consistent between them aside from motivations and middle and end acts.
The more ugly, elitist and common alternative argument is "Are you deep and intelligent enough to understand 03?" vs "This one is canon and adheres closely to the manga, so it's automatically better." And both of those stances are objectively incorrect.
For the record, I prefer 03, but Brotherhood being out was definitely a fun time.

That shows that there no correlation between to follow the original source material and the quality of the adaptation because it's only quality of the adaptation that matter .

FMA 2003 is definitely the winner for me. FMA 03 was not only action and adventure, but was a psychological horror/ thriller as well. Dante is probably one of the the best anime villains in the whole genre. The homunculi in FMA 03 were complex creatures in their own right and had very, very compelling stories. Lust's story was tragic, and she was honestly one of my favorite characters. When she was onscreen I paid attention. Scar's story line was definitely better in FMA 03 and more tragic. FMA 03 is simply a anime masterpiece story wise. I don't get how people prefer Brotherhood over this one. Don't get me wrong, I like Brotherhood, however it just wasn't as compelling or heartwrenching as the first. The pacing made all the really horrific scenes we grown to love in FMA 03, feel watered down or rushed. The Homunculi didn't really serve a purpose in Brotherhood other than being father's lackeys. with the exception of Greed. Also NO ONE can deny, the Shou Tucker episodes in FMA 03 were so much more gut wrenching and personal. They gave us a short arc in FMA 03 which made the audience really care about what happened to those characters. I literally cried during this anime. It's that flipping good.

I'd like to suggest new viewers watch the first 25 episodes of the original FMA before watching Brotherhood. Those episodes were done with far more emotional impact than they were in Brotherhood. Brotherhood sped through all those stories so we never got too attached to some of the characters.
But since the manga wasn't complete, the original had to make its own episodes; sadly it didn't quite work all the time.
Plus, you'd be missing out on some history of WHY it got such a following in the first place.
Like how Adult Swim played the second-season opener for the first 3 seasons, keeping the credits accurate to each season, thus making it the most iconic opening sequence of the entire original series. It even got a few fan-made parodies:
    ruclips.net/video/l2g7g6zuIRU/видео.html
    ruclips.net/video/_93wh3_6fgQ/видео.html
How about waiting several months in the States to catch the next manga after finding out it was postponed AGAIN (because writing and artwork for comics and manga is not an easy process)? That still makes you feel like a part of the fanbase/family.
How about how excited we were to finally see a new anime that's accurate to the manga? I saw the Japanese dub in 2009 on Funimation's channel before it came to the States translated.
SO, new viewers: watch the first 25 episodes of the original FMA before watching Brotherhood. Or watch the full FMA and Brotherhood, AND the animated movies that were released. It's all about history.

It is jarring and stops the flow of the show in addition to a few other times where they stop the story for a poorly timed joke or extraction.
FMA was better produced/edited, a better flow, even if the Brotherhood story arc was better it was less enjoyable to get there.
