- In this video I take a look at Behringer's expanding range of 2500 eurorack modules including three brand new modules just released and one further module coming soon.

You're very kind. My contribution was minimal. To be honest when the modules arrived in the post I was not enthused, mainly due to my ignorance and because I had not even plugged them in and tried them. But the sound and the playability won me over, and from there my interest in the real 2500 grew exponentially. There's a lot of questioning as to how authentic these modules sound, I'm sure that is important to some people, for me as always it is how the instrument sounds and how inspirational it is to play. If I hadn't been truly inspired by the modules I would never have produced the video tbh.

Great introduction to the 2500 modules, which I co-developed with Behringer. The filters are amazing, but also try the 1005 modamp with its precision voltages patched into the VCO carrier and modulator. The 1036 dual S&H module will also bring some new sounds in as well. Look forward to the next video!

Again I must commend you Rob for pulling this off. The only thing missing would be a tribute to your work on the modules, Behringer - AMSynths has a ring to it. And I agree with Tim in that I never even considered me getting anywhere near an ARP 2500 and if it wasn't for this enterprise, making it patch-able and affordable I never would have. I'm going to get all of those modules.
I know looks don't matter too much but this has got to be the most beautiful Behringer synths in my opinion.

That Elton John song you can't play blew my mind when I was a kid. In the 90s I can remember making my parents stay in the car until the end of the song. It sounded so cool and powerful in that Aerostar!
The roses in the window box have tilted to one side. Everything about this house was born to grow and die.
I’ve been skipping this video since the beginning because I was thinking I don’t think this is for me. But then, I decided to give it a try. Boy oh boy was I wrong! Some of the sounds from the 2500 are… I’d say almost celestial. Wow!
"Tribute" explains it all ! These Arp 2500 sounds are timeless and Behringer did an amazing job recreating them !
For me, the Arp 2500 has never been forgotten. I've wanted this since I first saw one in the '80s. I'll be buying 3 oscillators and one of each of the other modules. Kudos to Behringer!

Tim, Nice job on this presentation! As someone who spent quite a bit of time in front of the ARP 2500 at Berklee in the mid 70's, I can attest to the veracity of what you have presented here. I especially enjoyed the multitrack recording, using this very limited set of modules to create each part of the harmony, as well as the excellent pallet of sounds to fill out the composition. I am also not a stranger to that process - I was the engineer for Jay Lee's One Step More, now, I believe somewhat of a cult classic in Europe. After a very long time away, my interest in modular synthesis has come back full force, and I am in the process now of configuring a good size system, which I may choose to put up on RUclips for others to opine about. Thanks to you, my original suspicions about the quality of this re-issue have been put to bed, and I will be picking up a set of these modules soon. All the best, Steve

I did not know that the musical sequence in the film 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' has been made with an ARP 2500.
I only know that the ARP 2500 could only be afforded by universities and whealthy musicians. One existing and working instrument can be played at a studio at 's Hertogenbosch, Nederlands called Willem Twee.

Owning a 2500 has been my dream ever since the first Facebook message that showed up on Behringer page, this system and a vcs3 than I'll be ok for the rest of my life!

That filter sounds so good. And these modules are gorgeous. Love the colors of the knobs, the graphics, really classy. They nailed the vintage lab equipment vibe of the originals. I feel like putting this system together is more my flavor than getting the 2600.

A very interesting and complete demo (as usual) Tim. I was sceptical about Behringer's modules as I thought they may all be sonically the same with different clothes on but your demos have proved me wrong. Well done to Behtinger. I will be investing. BTW, the Birdsong was brilliant!!

The ARP2500, to my layman's ear, for years has been my gold standard to how a modular analog should sound. This is really exciting, and I may actually start contemplating hardware...
EDIT: That is kind of a ridiculous statement I know.... if ever there were an instrument of pure personal expression, it is the modular synth. But wow, the 2500... pure aural pleasure for me.

Best clones Behringer have made - an expensive obscure synth for which there are very limited alternatives. Well done Behringer and especially @amsynths !
The Toronto based trio Syrinx used a 2500 on stage in 1970. Wow what a show. Machine intelligence indeed! They also did the theme music to a TV series "Here Come The Seventies" Cheers
I can't count how many times I've watched this video out of both enjoyment and anticipation of all the modules to become available in the states. So far I have a Model D that I bought on clearance to hold me over, and the the 1033 and 1006? Filtamp module. Decided to buy only one 1004 oscillator for the time being since i have the Model D, but the 1047, 1046, and 1005 are a must in my opinion. Looking forward to future reviews of the 2500 series once you've completed your collection.
I don't know if it's the synths themselves or what, but your close up shots with the panning and the color-correction palette really nail the early 70s sci-fi look.
Your reviews are a rare pleasure one can't find very easily.
IMHO I think it woud have been nice to name Eliane Radigue among the great artists you named. Maybe only because she developed and created all of her music with this only synth.
She's the artist I associate most with the ARP 2500.
With the Sequencer, you can use the individual gate outputs and plug them into the reset jack to make shorter sequences.
I used a 2500 that was owned by the Memphis Pink Palace Museum in the '80s to develop soundtracks for their planetarium shows. Everything was recorded to an Ampex 1/2" 4trk - before we got an Otari 8-track. They would have sold it to me for $400 and I said I'd think about it (really didn't have the space at the time)... and I thought too long. I had begun using a Chroma Polaris, Oberheim M6 and Yamaha FM as well as early Korg samplers. But man, I swear that filter I'm hearing in your video is bringing that 2500 right back into my head. It really is that distinctive isn't it? I've held off on getting back into modular but darn it, this may be my ticket back.
$400 ?!!!!! Wow! I hear of so many great analogue synths that were basically given away back in the 80's and 90's. Ah the benefit of hindsight 😏
@@TimShoebridge I know... I've worn out shoes kicking myself. By the way - my Fender Chroma Polaris WAS given away to me. It wasn't working and they didn't have a clue about batteries or patch creation. I still have it and recently got new membrane switches.

Wow this sounds awesome, many thanks for this video. I’ve never been bothered about eurorack stuff before but this has certainly got my interest. I can still remember all those years ago listening to the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album and being blown away by the opening and immediately trying to find out what the instruments were from the sleeve notes!

It's good to see some people actually reviewing Behring products instead of recoiling whenever they hear their name. All the "Just buy a real moog" types have been suspiciously silent on all the rare modular system recreations.
Not me. Remember when they didn't like a journalist's negative coverage, and tried to trademark his own name in revenge/retaliation? I will never forget that. I recoil.

These Behringer eurorack posts are fantastic. I have been out of modular for almost 10 years (had a giant 160 space 5U I had built up then sold after retiring/moving) but these will get me back in forthwith so my wife hates you for that. Have a look at the Soundforce dual ADSR; as approachable as the Behringer 100 series for simplicity, but vastly more capable when delving deeper. Also, as you have mentioned modular is much ado about sequencing. I think many of us would enjoy an episode on using a Beatstep Pro or Keystep Pro or even the new Korg SQ-64 with your setup. (Either company would be smart to provide a review model I should think)

The Behringer 2500 looks and sounds every bit as good as it should with AMSynths involvement. I have Rob's Snowfall filter and it's the best made Eurorack module I've ever owned.
Made my ears immediately perk up... really nice compositions and fantastic overview of what you have here Tim. Really fantastic. 2500 series will the modular system. I'll build. So much character there.

Seriously i have an empty 84hp rack ( aside from Behringer's own CP1A ) awaiting modules to compliment my GrandMother, MatrixBrute and Hydrasynth and was only thinking of Modulators but upon hearing these osc's and being born in the early 70's, i really love the authenticity. Superb demo Tim, keep it up x :)
The multimode filter sounds sweet and capable of great character. I think it will be the the most popular.

@Tim Shoebridge, Thinking about one of your closing comments, I'm not sure that any two units of an analog synthesizer sounds 100% like an another as they stand today. it may very well be that there is no 100% "definitive" sound for any particular model of analog synthesizer. I've heard of people on RUclips who have more than one Minimoog Model D who noticed that they sound slightly different to one another, and that may be due to how the components aged and experienced wear in each synth, different versions or brands of circuit components that were used in different batches of synths produced, and in how one or both have been tuned. In my book, if it faithfully follows the original design where possible, that's enough for me. To me the interface and functionality , and workflow of such a piece of equipment would be the biggest measure in the "real world" vs an ideal version of reality. I absolutely LOVE your videos Tim! Thank you for making them.

Tim - Now at least I know who, besides me, owns the Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of the Worlds. My mother purchased this album in 1978 when it came out and it was a magical part of our weekend listening, along with the album art. Great video!

Wisdom. I appreciate this statement so much. Quite the opposite of a certain _super cool_ hipster influencer out there. A guy that wants to control what is "cool" in the scene he joined after many others had already discovered eurorack, organically. On a related topic, MIT did a study and found out hipsters look alike. It's a Hipster Paradox!

I hope Beringer invents a "folded spring" modual. More springs in a cubic space with each one amplifiable or attenuated by gain control of the individual springs.
I heard references to musicians tapping on an original ARP 2600 for rythem and effects. Percussion signals sent back to the unit process for further processing.

Fantastic demo Tim...it’s awesome to see these ! I was aware of the 2500 history & maybe it’s an influence of why I got into synths....: it’s fantastic these are being made.....I’m not into modular but even if I never buy a single one I’m just pleased they exist for synth enthusiasts to make music with👏

This video and some other videos about these module made me decide that I will build a system out of those modules, I really think there’s something special in its sound.

Sounds great Tim! Some nice tunes in this... that way of making tunes must be quite interesting actually i.e. making patches, sequencing then reconfiguring it all and layering on top, rinse and repeat... in general we don't do that these days as we have so many keybaords with instant recall... but can't help we lost something along the way.
I always "print" audio versions of my MIDI tracks. One of the great frustrations of the old MIDI days is the tracks aren't available as audio. I'm gradually working through my early 90s work and hopefully the Atari will last till the job is done (my Tascam 244 has had almost all its rubber parts replaced).
I'm one of the lucky who had the chance to play with an original 2500. The CEM Studio in the Netherlands has a nice system. In the late '80s~early '90s it was situated in Arnhem, NL.
Wonderful sounds but maddening to keep it working. Those patch sliders were not really reliable. I'll be on the outlook when those modules will be available.
I've heard that as well. I was told that crosstalk was a big problem also.

With the amazing music you create, I'm surprised, that of all the new hardware you have tried, that you haven't done a video with the ASM Hydrasynth. I think you would love it! Cheers!
If you use an external clock to advance the sequencer you can in fact add rests. Use one of it's own voltage banks to control the frequency of the external clock, then adjust the amount of control voltage at any given step by increasing the voltage at that step to slow the external clock down and in effect, add a rest.
I love this Tim, it’s all about the sound, which is sublime. How about making 4 mini synths with these modules and playing polyphonic! Awesome.
Hi mate make sure you get the 1050 mixer Sequencer when it comes out.. I've made the Nonlinearcircuits version of this module and it's one of the best ... Can work in a multitude of configurations... Sequential switch, mixer , Sequencer.. it's fantastic
