it's true that kpop is more of an industry than a genre but not every artist from south korea is kpop. i think when people talk about "kpop" they actually mean "idol music". there's also k-hip hop, k-rnb, etc. which generally isn't much different from western music. kpop idols usually join a company at a young age and go through years of harsh training before debuting
