Notice how Pamela never once smiled again. She gave them the behaviours they wanted, but her spirit is so broken. She is only doing what they say to avoid the discomfort of the yelling and harsh grabbing of her face, not because she feels better doing this. They took away her stimming movements that she used to comfort herself, and left her with no form of comfort (except THEIR definition of comfort, which for some reason is physical touch that is often uncomfortable for autistic people) unless she performs what they are forcing her to do.

It’s sad but that’s the way things were in the 1960s and poor Pamela really did look depressed.

Really interesting to see early applied behavioral analysis. There's a ton that's really good about this science but also as we see with Pamela and the doctor's response to her identification of yellow - a lot of opportunity for problematic behavior on the side of the doctors. Anyways- the "bizarre behavior" is called stemming and is something almost everybody does (whether consciously or not).

Seeing how touch is a major issue with children with autism, it's a plus the doctors/therapists heavily incorporate touch as positive part of the treatment process! Though some techniques may come across as harsh and a bit crude, it's what they thought was most effective during that period.

I felt like I just watched 16 minutes of abuse and manipulation on innocent children and the adults trying to make them into children that they may never be. I think instead of making these kids into who WE want them to be we should help them be the best that THEY can be.
