The fact that I've got the chance to have this lesson in my own studio and repeated as many times as I want... Thank you so much for sharing this with us Matt, you're not just an awesome musician but a great teacher, too!
A glimpse into the great mind of Matt Johnson. Thank you for sharing some of your ideas and techniques Matt. You make it look so easy but I know it is after much practice that it became second nature to you. For myself, being from a Prog background, it will be some time before I get that frluidity but I will get there. Thanks again and I'm looking forward to your next videos.
I'm just trying to work that one out now, slowed it down to .05 speed on here and I've got quite a way to go but I'm getting there... To get you started, here's how I've broken it down : (LH) C (Pinky) (LH) C octave up (Thumb (RH) E,A,C (Thumb, middle, pinky) (RH) G,Bb (1st,4th) (RH) D (Thumb) (LH) C (Thumb) (RH) C,E,A (Thumb, middle, pinky) (RH) D,G (2nd, 4th) (RH) Bb (thumb) (LH) G (thumb) that's about where I'm up to, and I can only really play the first part in rhythm...
So today I had it pretty much figured out and started playing along at 70bpm, half speed. I gradually notched up the tempo and soon enough I had it up to 130 bpm half speed so went back to 70 bpm playing at normal speed, and again gradually sped it up as I got comfortable. Now I can *just about* play it at full tilt (About 115bpm), so about an hour and a half to get from playing it at 35 bpm to 115 bpm.
It's truly incredible that an amazing, A-list, chart-topping music personality gives out ***FREE*** musical advice and training to the masses just to help people. Thank you, truly.
Hi from France Matt. I have a lot of Jamiroquai album !. I am 68 years old ... time flies so quickly!, but I always listen with great pleasure to your music ... Nostalgia !. Many Thanks for all this work.Thank you for your generosity, to pass on your knowledge to us, it is good in this troubled period, luckily the music exists.
„So there you have it“ 🙂 Matt is funkier with one hand than I would be with 4 (if I had that many...) AND the left Foot on the expression pedal! Maximum Respekt!
Really nice to have this tutorial available from a master of the technique. There are countless funk guitar tutorials out there; even though I'm primarily a keys player I'm usually more comfortable playing funk on guitar because it's easier and there's more stuff out there to help you learn it. Thanks for helping bridge the gap!
Love these tutorial Matt 🦾👾🔥....And everything else you do of course. It’s a blessing the community can connect like this on YT. And I’m appreciative of your endeavors to reach to out and spread knowledge and amazing music 🙏
Absolutely Brilliant ♥️🎼 I love the fact that you get "bored" playing the same inversion and you spice it up ..you can't do that with sample loops your an inspiration keep up the brilliant contributions,🎼🎼🎼🎹🎹🎹
Wow you're a better teacher than a dedicated funk clav dude with a big channel. This is excellent and easy to follow as I've done my chords, harmony, inversions, theory and nashville numbers. It's perfect for my level. So awesome to see that Angle, the Chords and see the Left Hand so clearly. Just brilliant.
Hello Matt! Fan of Jamiroquai since 95 and now a fan of his groove on keyboards when I decided to learn the instrument at 40 years old. Watching him play Bill Evans inspires me to overcome learning difficulties. Buy the way: beautiful Montage! Congratulations and thanks for sharing your videos.
Matt, I cannot thank you enough for your videos. I would 100% buy a full series of lesson videos from you if you had them. I made a playlist of all your tutorials to finally do what I've needed to do for my playing for the last 15 years but have been avoiding it for dumb reasons. I've been a Jamiroquai fan since the 90s...thanks for the funky groovyness you brought to the band and to the internet!! =)
I'm away from my synths atm but you've given me so much inspiration from watching this that I can't wait to get back to my synths to give some of the things here a go. Thanks Matt
Wow what a smooth left hand bass. Love Foolsophy reminds at my best time in my life so far. Many thanks for the nice video. Have already tried to play your patterns - right hand ok-ish, left hand out of order the next day. Love your channel!
Absolutely loved this - it's one of the most useful videos I've ever seen. I'm a very novice keyboardist (only really noodle around with it, or use it to pick out chords), so most of my composition is done with guitar or bass (instruments I'm actually experienced with), or just the piano roll. One of my biggest challenges when composing music is writing parts for keys. Even knowing music theory, writing realistic-sounding parts for keys is difficult, because they tend to be so much more layered than any other instrument. Writing a horn part on a guitar is one thing; writing a piano part is another thing entirely. Looking forward to more videos like this!
Great stuff!!!! There are plenty of basic vids that slow things down and teach parrot fashion, but this is pure gold as it makes you actually think for yourself extend yourself! Cheers!!
nice.. i feel like (for the amount of years i have played keyboard and wrote literally 1000s of song ideas) that i should be already doing stuff like this but alas i am not.. this has inspired me to just practice and just DO IT..cheers man :)
This is great! Nice simple base but loads of room to expand on. The rhythm changes make practicing this over and over way more exiting. Thanks so much, more videos like this!
I'm predominantly a keyboard player but had drum lessons a couple of years ago and learnt that pretty much all of my keyboard/guitar playing is about the rhythm / percussive stuff
Thank you Matt. I love them funky licks. Still blown away that I am getting tutored by THE Matt Johnson. Why didn't I meet you when I bought the first Jamiroqaui album...I could be playing for real by now. Anyway, greetz from France and many many thanks.
I’m a guitar player and we always open shows playing something funky or sound check turns into something funky/jazzy. But I’ve recently been learning keys. And it’s absolutely a percussive thing.
The beauty of these extremely helpful tutorials, Matt is that even though they were recorded years ago, I can still call it up on YT and learn from you. I'm a guitarist/switch hitter and have joined a funk/latin/r&b band playing _only_ keys and your videos give me a) inspiration and b) technique. Go M@!!
THANK YOU MATT!!!!!!!!! I've been struggling with getting better at playing funk keys since I'm self taught. So glad one of the greats is finally assisting!
Thank you so much. It’s been brutal not being able to jam out and learn these days but watching your videos and playing along makes me feel and evolve again.
What helped me a lot to gain rhythmic independence of my hands, which is the fundamental skill for funk: I played congas for a while decades ago. Of course bongos, tablas, or just the edge of the table fulfill the same purpose. Do ‘percussioning‘ wherever you are (and whenever others aren‘t disturbed)!
Loved some of your comments. :-) Hopefully gigging will be a thing again sooner than later! :-) And loved seeing the tensions you are playing on some of those funk harmonies. Would love to see more insight into how you approach improv. There's a lot in funk that is similar to jazz, and the keyboards always sit on that line between supporting the rhythm section and taking the spotlight. (Unfortunately, my arranging skills are better than my performing skills, but I'm working on it! :-)) We want the funk! Give up the funk!
That was Superb Matt 🙏🏻 I’m gonna try and practice the “Love Fool Outro” awesome playing !!! Love a Clav 🙌🏻 Also that’s what I love about Jamiroquai Live the way you freshen up already great songs but mix it up with funky new Jams , wish I could be a fly on the wall when you guys come up with these in the Studio , man I love Jamiroquai , can not wait for the next instalment... Loving the album Matt 😎👍🏻
Ah yes! Really happy you featured l.foolosophy in this vid. It was always hooky since day1 and was so neatly packaged as a pop-length track I felt. And then Rob solos got better.... And then the ending stabs with sola... And then the even better Rob solos and then the vocal embellish! And then your variations Matt. Basically one of my favourites that they all did live. Also with that nice conclusive trumpet line later on in the years. I do like the way you play it Matt wit h that dance'able 90s funk variety
This helped me a lot. For your first example, and using my Rhodes VST, I learned the RH (easy enough), then the LH (a bit trickier) then copied your beat into my drum machine (actually the hardest part), put it all together, and it sounds super funky and great. I can't stop playing it. Thanks a lot, you're a great teacher!
Absolutely loving this from a self-educational perspective but especially from an immersion into your wonderful style perspective. Such a privilege. Very generous and much appreciated, all the way over here in Sydney. Cheers and thanks mate, Dave
"Keep it real simple". Plays epic funky left hand.
Its pretty simple (for a pro, of course...))
Watch his licks video: it sounds complicated, but it's not.
hahaha totally..."remember, you're only trying to isolate the gravitons from the higgs particle, plain ol' Sunday"
so true, when Matt plays it is far from simple
Very cool and like you said: there is hardly any funk comping tutorials for keyboards on RUclips. Thank you!
The fact that I've got the chance to have this lesson in my own studio and repeated as many times as I want...
Thank you so much for sharing this with us Matt, you're not just an awesome musician but a great teacher, too!
great masterclass. had to rewatch at half speed so I could follow the keys
Anyone can feel the sincerity. It's encouraging in this world at this time.
I’ve been playing the keyboard for about 40 years and this taught me some new ways of thinking and gave me a lot of inspiration. Thank you. 💕

Please continue this series! So revolutionary in my keyboard playing!
Epic, thanks. True, keys are underrepresented in this niche from an educational point of view. Have a lovely Sunday!
Personal notes:
5:12 "Ok, it's in C."
5:16 "Got it, a 6th chord, going to a 9th. Easy enough."
5:23 "6th and 9th again, lower inversion. Ok, cool."
5:38 "Never mind, I'm out."
* *sobs gently* *
just start slow, doesn't have to be 120 bpm!?!@
I'm just trying to work that one out now, slowed it down to .05 speed on here and I've got quite a way to go but I'm getting there...

@@MrMargaretScratcher Damn, I forgot about the video speed. I'm totally going to do this today. Thanks for the motivation
I’m a writer and this is so helpful. I love your guys’ grooves. Thanks.

Thank you for sharing this! Looked up to your tunes for ages, and it's such a treat to hear how you think.
Super funky, brother. Including that wah clav - whaaaaat the hell! Thanks for the tips and insights.

That's Amazing to have funk piano tutorial by one of my favorite piano player!
Many thanks for it!
Keep continuing to do it!
Really inspiring! Can't wait to see the pt.2. Thanks a lot Matt.
thank you for doing this videos - this is a rare insight from the top-level pro
Matt, what an absolute gift these videos are! You are a phenomenal player and an excellent teacher - thank you!!
OMG!!!! Yes yes and yes! You are 100% funk keyboard playing does not get discussed anywhere.
Hey Matt, always a great pleasure to watch your videos, Thank you so much for sharing ❤️❤️ Stay healthy , Greetings from bavaria ... 💪😷😷😷

What a sweet guy. I am sure everyone can find this tutorial helpful even for other styles, like playing pad chords then bringing in a pattern...great
I'm away from my synths atm but you've given me so much inspiration from watching this that I can't wait to get back to my synths to give some of the things here a go. Thanks Matt
Please do more of these, they're very useful and fun!
Wow what a smooth left hand bass. Love Foolsophy reminds at my best time in my life so far. Many thanks for the nice video. Have already tried to play your patterns - right hand ok-ish, left hand out of order the next day. Love your channel!
I'm left handed so, I'm just here admiring his left and even wishing my right plays like his left. 🤣🤣🤣 this is awesome, thanks for this.
I'm LEARNING 😃 Thanks for sharing!!!
Much appreciated. The Clav can sound really full and complicated with not na huge amount going on - well worth practising....
As a guitarist looking to learn groovy keys that's not technically overwhelming, this is perfect
Absolutely loved this - it's one of the most useful videos I've ever seen. Thank you so much for the funk tutorial Matt. This is fantastic and very helpful.
Love Jamiroquai's music! I'm primarily a drummer but I play keyboard by ear and this really helps me. Thanks for making the videos!
I'm predominantly a keyboard player but had drum lessons a couple of years ago and learnt that pretty much all of my keyboard/guitar playing is about the rhythm / percussive stuff
Please keep doing more tutorials!!! You conceptualize these funk techniques so well
THANK YOU for taking time to give us some tips.
Thank you Matt. I love them funky licks. Still blown away that I am getting tutored by THE Matt Johnson. Why didn't I meet you when I bought the first Jamiroqaui album...I could be playing for real by now. Anyway, greetz from France and many many thanks.
Amazing tutorial. First good funk keys tutorial I've found here on RUclips. Really looking forward to part 2!
I’m a guitar player and we always open shows playing something funky or sound check turns into something funky/jazzy. But I’ve recently been learning keys. And it’s absolutely a percussive thing.
Love it, absolutely love it! Keep 'em coming!
I somehow ran into this guy on RUclips and have really enjoyed these videos. literally almost all of them.
(starts playing Clav with wah) ...somebody open a window!!! Great video Matt, thank you as always! Love the new record
At last - proper funk keys tutorials on RUclips THANK YOU MATT!
This is great, trying to learn how to get better at the keys, as I'm a rank amateur, and vids like these really help, keep em up!
The beauty of these extremely helpful tutorials, Matt is that even though they were recorded years ago, I can still call it up on YT and learn from you. That's so much fun watching your stunning performance!
Very funky playing. Nice one!
Thank you very much. I hope quarantine keeps going for the time being to watch more videos by great artists like you.
love your simple explanation.. Anticipating to WHEN GIGS ARE A THING AGAIN!!
Great playing and explanation, Thanks!
Awesome Matt, thank you!!!
THANK YOU MATT!!!!!!!!! I've been struggling with getting better at playing funk keys since I'm self taught. So glad one of the greats is finally assisting!
This fantastic! I feel like this will apply really well to house tracks, as well.
Thank you so much. It’s been brutal not being able to jam out and learn these days but watching your videos and playing along makes me feel and evolve again.
Thank you! Very cool lesson!
Man, your timing is impeccable.
as far as content goes this is as good as it gets. goddamn amazing.

true
Beautiful secrets! Thank you so much!✌️
Excellent video! Please make more like this!!! I love your videos Matt! Cheers from Japan!
The only thing better than a Jamiroquai tutorial? Having their keyboard player teach it. Thank you! Subbed.
I liked this video on your statement that this doesn't get discussed often, I tried to like it again when you said piano is a percussion instrument.
Absolutely excellent tutorial! You're a great teacher. Looking forward to part 2 :)

Man this guy is an extraordinary musician, learning so much from these videos, great job 🤙🏽
Thanx again! I’ve been playing forever and you give me ideas to take to stage 👍
Great tutorial
Truly amazing, I will work on this exercise when I jam with my band
Great vibe at the end
Thanks!
Out-standing. There aren't any comping tutorials for keyboards on RUclips. A tutorial for left hand comping while soloing would be fantastic too.
Thanks for writing the chords at 1:20, it really helps! Please do that more often! You're awesome!
This is so awesome
Matt, this is really great. Please keep up the tutorials. I’m absolutely loving it.
I've no problem following your right hand...but your left is scaring me! Fantastic!
Please Matt, do a Funk Tutorial focusing on the left hand bass lines? Please?
Thank you!!! Best, Daniel
