The Beauty of Nostalgic Liminal Spaces

- During many moments in our lives, we hit a turning point. A state of transition we can't turn back from. One way we've found to convey this is through what are known as "liminal spaces". Areas that represent those weird eras in our lives where we feel stuck between... really, anything. Physically, mentally, metaphorically, as long as something is moving from state A to state B, it can be liminal. These spaces can be pretty much anywhere, but they all give off that same weird vibe. They can be nostalgic, melancholy, fascinating, and so much more. They're like time capsules in the form of archeology, and are all very cool.

This type of imagery has inspired lots of great artists over the years, and that is something that was skipped over in this video. I focused more on the real world locations for the most part, but the works of liminal artists is also very breathtaking and worth looking into. Also, the definition of liminal space is very flexible and for the sake of including more personal nostalgic entries, I was very loose with what I considered. The definition isn't perfectly defined, so I recommend you decide what you want to figure as a liminal space, as it is so personal, and under the right circumstances, pretty much any space can become liminal. I also wanted to focus on purely liminal spaces, which is why the backrooms were only lightly covered, but they themselves are also very neat.
This video is being uploaded on New Year's Eve 2023! Going into the new year itself is a transitional period, so it can also be considered liminal, so I guess this is a new years special. In any case, to everyone who is reading this, have a good 2024!
This video was made in appreciation of the aesthetical art form and the ideas it represents, I hope this brings the concept to even more people and inspires more discussion. I do not take credit for any of the photos used in this video, or even really any of the ideas, this is just a topic I've liked for many years and wanted to make something about. Thanks for watching! Patmac the kind of guy to disappear for several months then come back into my life like he never left.
Is PatMac okay?
@@linaboo24 Siah the clown knows a lot about that
@@Sonikku_Za_Hejjihoggu_1991 idk but hes back with the milk
@@linaboo24Cory has a lot of videos pac Mac has a lot but to little to supply a year
Patmac used to get million or more views per video dude could have been making great money but doesn’t post a lot and I don’t think this vid will do as well just seems like a wasted opportunity to me
God I hope there’s a fun graphic explaining why gangster SpongeBob is there
I wish he could do a video on how he’s actually mysterious, pretty much nobody knows where Gangsta SpuchBop actually originated.
I was wondering the same thing people are starting to use him in thumbnails like crazy
I just like how calm and empty but full the liminal spaces feel
I don't think they're always empty.
a reason older cartoons engage me so much is how they let the mood speak they don't overload things as much one my fav Christmas media pieces is just a guy wondering town at night confusing a child by not scolding him like adults should
I never expected him to make a video, especially about this, but here we go, glad to see you back
He never left. He just uploads periodically.
he also put me in the thumbnail
Dang, I didn't think he would make another episode after the July one but here we are, AND released on New Year's Eve. What a way to end the year with "123123" this year.
It went from something that was somber, depressing, yet nostalgic, to a powerful message at the end mentioning how we should be encouraged to explore the world while we still can. And that is very heartwarming PatMac. Also, don't stop making these wonderful videos, it helps for people whom have loved your content over the past 8+ years since you've started back in 2014.

HE'S BACK!!!
Edit: wow, this was unexpectedly a wholesome video, I was expecting a somber vibe like most videos on this topic, but that upbeat vibe and ending was a welcome surprise, keep up the good work pat :)
He's been absent for 4 months now
Fun fact: I was watching a compilation of these rooms and actually saw one from a hospital I visited as a child.
If you ever see the image of the weird, whimsical-looking treehouse in the middle of a sterile building, that was a hospital in Fort Wayne, Indiana. They built a big play area on the second floor of the lobby, the door in the treehouse was the elevator. It got torn down eventually, so for me, it's genuine nostalgia.
I don’t even care that there’s only a couple more hours of December, hell of 2023, but you’ve made my month. I rewatch your Mario and sonic bootleg videos quite literally annually. I’ve grown up with your stuff in some way. Thanks for uploading Pat.
When the world needed him most, he returned at the very end of the year. Welcome back man
I get similar feelings towards old reviews of merchandise. Videos like your own that talk about history of some old plush sets or just reviews definitely evoke similar emotions, reminiscing about the past when these plushies were available. The past that I wasn't even a part of. Great video PatMac, I'm glad that you keep making videos.
As for a video suggestion, how about a video where you are showing off your merch collection? The video would probably flop when it comes to views but It'd be cool to finally see your collection in full instead of a few shots. Maybe you will find a way to make a topic out of that?
As a person who loves visiting abandoned or dying malls, this has really got to me. I’ve never really liked packed malls or stores. When they start to die, it makes me appreciate them more. I usually wonder what they were like in their heyday but never get to experience them which makes me feel bummed that they are what they are now. My example for this is Fiesta Mall, a mall in Mesa, Arizona. I remember passing the road sign on the highway. I never really cared for it. I then started watching a channel called retail archeology who documented the mall a couple of times. I soon became fascinated with the mall. I decided to go to the abandoned mall. I managed to get inside of it (don’t ask why the door was just unlocked) and the site I saw was amazing. Being in a large space with literally no one there felt so nice and relaxing. Fun fact, the former Macy’s there used to be four different stores until closing in 2014. Very fascinating indeed. Unfortunately as of July 2023, the mall was demolished. I was pissed. I never went to the mall as a kid since I lived very close to a way busier one, but it still angered me that it got demolished. Although I know that the property owners can do what they want with the structure, I felt that the mall was like my own friend to me, my own liminal space. Although a mall filled with syringes, asbestos, or pp drawings might not be the safest place to be in, it was special to me and I’ll never forget it.
a Mall near where I live has become a outdoor mall which bums me out a bit going to its indoor food court is cool instead of just eating in the car or at the Red-robin
@@senritsujumpsuit6021 yeah a lot of malls usually get repurposed. Some of them get turned into power centers which are basically outdoor complexes with big box chains such as Walmart or target. Fiesta mall is being into a lifestyle center which is like an outdoor space with retail, office, and apartments. The thing though is that the area around has developed a lot of apartments. There shouldn’t be a reason to build more when there is plenty of them a couple hundred yards away. I think it’s probably because of the amount of people entering the state from California that there are more apartments now.
Go to Cincinnati mall
retail archeology is sooo good for my fascination of spaces
This video was such a fun and unique ride and unlike anything you’ve made before!
In a video talking about Nostalgia, seeing 7:08 was a mind boggling experience. This picture is from a old Disney store that used to be 20 minutes away from my house before it’s closure in 2020-2021. We would visit it every time we went to that mall. It’s a weird experience seeing people have nostalgia for a place they’ve never been in, yet you’ve been there and remember it in its prime. I guess that’s the power of liminal spaces.
One that comes to mind for me is the Carousel of Progress at Disney World. It’s my favorite attraction there and it is something that’s never changed from my first visit in 2002 to my last in 2016. Time slows down for me in there. I love it.
hes back
It’s always a good day when PatMac uploads. Such an amazing channel!
At this point Pat is just this once in a year uploader that, every time he shows up, makes me insanely happy to see they're alive.
My room currently looks like 2004 never ended and I'm glad you're able to explain liminalspaces so well and in depth. Love your videos!
Imagine you are at school, you see your lunchroom; it is filled with life, people having fun, eating food, ect. Then, come back on the middle of the night, there is not a single person there, the lights are dark and the only person that really is present is you.
Everytime I watch your videos, I feel a sense of comfort accommodating it. That's why I love this channel, it has such a unique feeling that I've never seen recreated.
I miss when he uploaded more but those days are gone.
It’s always a good day when a new PatMac drops
I agree
And then he disappears for a year
such a unique video from your others, and one i adore just the same! i feel as though ive been stuck in liminality for my whole life. i have a poor memory, and even memories from yesterday can feel years apart. every second, i feel like a brand new person, for better or for worse. in my bad moments, i wonder if i will ever feel joy again. in my happy moments, i am confused as to how i could ever feel so glum! everything is cloaked in confusion and uncertainty, but maybe that parts not so unique to me and my brainweird. the other day, i was looking at half price christmas candy, and i bought a box of really big gummy krabby patty sliders, and it made me think of you. i really love this video
That ending speech was beautiful, goodness. Thank you so much Patmac, I know you don’t come by often but you make my week every time. Hope life is treating you kindly 💜
Hooray, pat Mac’s back I was wondering where he went
Perfect video to end 2023. Patmac is back for another banger. And while this video was a little more mature than the average patmac feel, you managed to put gangsta SpongeBob in the thumbnail and I absolutely adore it
7:10 holy shit the funny plushie man just directly quoted a terrifying thought that's haunted me for years
The idea that memories can be fake never really fucked with me when it was a plot point in Sonic Adventure 2 and Blade Runner 2049, but I remember when I first considered that exact idea, that a "memory" I have from long ago has just as much likelihood as being a memory of a dream, as a memory of reality. And in that same vein, *how many of your "nightmares" were real memories your brain told you were simply nightmares to protect your sanity? How many horrifying things have you experienced but subconsciously supressed to avoid your mind breaking and your perception of reality crumbling to nothing?*
This is terrifying and beautiful. Neon Genesis Evangelion vibes. Thank you.
3:58 that HAS to be one of the smartest Rickrolls I’ve ever seen
This was beautiful. I always cherish your videos Patmac. Thank you for making them.
During my psychotic episode, I experienced incredibly vivid dreams. I had hundreds over the course of the year that I was insane. The most common recurring theme was exploring infinite liminal spaces, usually by myself. Mansions that went on forever, unique facilities, beaches, towns, and other interesting places. I never felt afraid, or creeped out. In fact, I was enchanted. They gave me a profound nostalgic feeling. It never felt like demons were lurking in these places, if anything it was like I was playing hide-and-seek with an angel, or some long-lost infatuation. It was the most special, safe feeling. One of my favorite places was a shower room. It was incredibly dim, almost black. A faint, distant light allowed me to see. The walls, floors, and ceiling were totally smooth, as though they were made from hardened clay. If I pulled a rope, warm water would pour down from the ceiling, and wash over me. I felt so peaceful and at-home. I wish I could go back to having these dreams, my current dreams don’t compare.
I was up late at 6 whatever and chose this video
Mid watch I’m thinking “dang this voice sounds familiar..I quickly check the. Channel name and I was then shocked to know it was the return of the king
living in the short time of a new PatMac upload is a liminal moment in itself
It’s so sad that he doesn’t upload at least once every month because his vids are great, his lost media vid was the first one I watched and it was incredible I never got bored. Thanks for uploading and I await your next upload with great excitement
This video was the exact thing I needed at this moment. No bit, I needed to hear that speech about how things would be better. Thank you
Wasn't expecting such an existential video based on this topic but it left me feeling really optimistic by the end. Great video as always
this is a beautiful piece of art that deserves to be appreciated, thank you patmac
This video is really powerful. I've been having a lot of dreams lately about being in retro game stores or arcades. They're always full of games I've never seen or heard of before, whether they're totally original or lost entries in series I really love. These games are always very evocative of a specific retro game console, or at least a specific time frame.
I think I have these dreams because of a longing for new and exciting experiences. When I was younger and first had access to the internet, I'd find out about new, interesting games constantly, and they always sparked my imagination. I didn't have fast enough internet to watch or download many videos, so oftentimes all I had to go off of were out-of-context screenshots and text descriptions. Now that we live in a time where information is much more easily shared, in addition to my knowledge of video games being much more complete due to my age, that feeling of discovery is very hard to recapture.
I've been thinking a lot about getting into new, non-digital hobbies. It's a scary proposition to me since I'm so familiar with digital media and technology, and because I get a lot of my social interaction digitally at this point in my life. But on the other hand, it might fulfill that longing for the new and exciting.
Watching this video, I can tell that you've changed a lot since you made videos regularly. Whatever you're doing now, I hope that you're closer to fulfilling whatever longing may motivate you. Not to mention, the fact that you still put out a video once in a while is proof to me that finding new hobbies or interests isn't necessarily a permanent goodbye to your old ones.
It is always a treat watching one PatMac’s videos. Sonic plushies, international anything, I’d watch it regardless on what it’s about.
Bro same, every time I’m bored I just see one of his vids and I’m satisfied. But the problem is as of now I’m writing this, he hasn’t uploaded in 6-7 months
I haven’t even started the video, but getting a video from PatMac, hours before the new year is quite legendary. This feels like a christmas gift~ I hope you’re doing well PatMac, and that you don’t feel pressured to pump out videos. Have a good a new year’s eve! :D
I’m so happy to see you back! Your videos really inspired me to start collecting things and I’m very happy to see another vid
I really needed this video! It’s been something on my mind for a while. I always try and enjoy the now, the small mediocrities and charms of life while still being nostalgic. There is something beautiful yet comforting about knowing that you will be nostalgic for the life and time you currently lead.
Patmac, i just can't even explain in words how much i miss you. thank you for still uploading even after long periods of time.
Man this was great, an awesome mix of your past stuff and something completely new
Keep it up!!!
Holy fuck orca man
I usually watch your videos while playing games on my PC, but this was different. I was planning to watch some of your videos on your channel then I saw this video, I clicked on it. Thank goodness I didn't watch this while playing. This video just have a different tone than any of your videos, it wasn't like any of the Liminal Spaces videos I have watch, its beautiful. Thank you PatMac.
THE PAT IS BACK!!! And just in time, what a perfect way to start off the year! Love how you highlighted the importance of not growing too attached to our nostalgia and the importance of seeking out new experiences. I think as a concept, the backrooms and liminal spaces encapsulate that idea perfectly (especially in a horror setting). A lot of us are afraid of what the future may bring, so we cling to our Y2K (or the 90s or 80s depending on how old you are) aesthetics for comfort. We'd rather live in the empty, abandoned mall arcade from our childhood when life was simpler than accept the change that inevitably comes with the passing of time. But you're absolutely right, those periods of time are long past gone, and instead of trying to bring these times back we should stick to just admiring them in photographs and in our memories while looking to all the new possibilities the future holds! All of this to say, I loved the video, and can't wait to see what other videos you'll make in the future!
Sometime last year, I had a dream I still vividly recall because it centered around these sensations. I was on the inside of a closed down school I never went into IRL that was in my hometown. A section had been converted into a general store, for snacks and stuff. There was magical powers known in the universe and related. I or someone else did some sort of magic and in an instant, the year was apparently somewhere between 2001 - 2004 again. All of the snacks originally present in the store in the school were now branded with the logos I could remember from that time (eg how mtn dew used to be completely spelled out on the bottles) and newer snacks of today were simply not there. The news on the now present CRT in the corner was very much low resolution and dated.
It was so eerie, but for some reason it filled me with an immense joy or bliss, or at least my dream self. Being able to experience the genuine feel of a long gone time period that I had only existed in as a more simple life form was just amazing. Despite the weirdness, I loved that dream.
was having the worst day today til patmac dropped this 🙏🙏🙏
God I love your content, such a good topic for a video, happy to see you back.
this shit almost made me tear up honestly there was something beautiful about the way you talked about growing up. great vid man.
I've never been in such a relatable point in my life. It's almost a little bizarre how relevant this video is to me right now.
I do wonder how many people are going through anything remotely similar, as I've heard from many that the past 2 years has been very rough on them.
Maybe it's a mix of world events as well as just being in this point in time as a generation who grew up and often observed/experienced similar things.
Even things like Nintendo, where we got to watch them grow from a small video game company and now begin their expansion into a large media company. We got to see technology expand and refine with all of the growing pains, and even remembering the world prior to the internet and knowing there's no way to go back.
Love the content. Was thinking of you today and checked on the channel and was extremely surprised to see an upload from today.
Glad you still pop up from time to time.
You know it’s gonna be a good video when it has gangster SpongeBob in the thumbnail lol
It's been awhile. I'm always happy to another post from ya, PatMac. Regardless of the topic!
Ah, nothing like a new PatMac video to close out the year, and one focused on liminal spaces and how enchanting they are no less. Another phenomenal video, indeed; I especially adore the last couple moments of the video!
that message you gave towards the end was honestly quite beautiful man thank you
Bro disappears and magically returns like nothing happens
I got my christmas present 6 days late.
I haven't seen the video yet but I'm sure it's going to be a banger.
Edit after watching the video: Since I learned what Liminal Spaces are I've been completely mesmorized by them. Everytime I see one of these images I feel a mellow nostalgia, which is weird since I was born in a different time and location. Ever since I was born I've always preferred 90's and 2000's stuff, for some reason, but I think that's the case because of their general aesthetic and charm. My love for this media has resulted in me having a huge apreciation for artforms like Vaporwave and Liminal Spaces that are based on nostalgia and that make feel very relaxed.
This is so different from your other videos but exactly what we needed, thank you for making it.
allmost half a year later HE RETURNS! while the windows XP install music plays in the background ..good to see you back patmac! i was wondering when id see you again!.
Possibly the best way to end off 2023! I remember going to MovieStop around 2011-2012. My sister and I bought a Pocahontas 2 DVD. Great stuff as always PatMac!
YESSS HE CAME BACK FOR ONE LAST VIDEO THIS YEAR LET’S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Seeing a new patmac release genuinely made me feel so much better. I was feeling pretty down after looking into real world events and this shows my that the world isn't so hostile, thank you so much for being with me ever since my childhood ❤
There’s something sombering or rather mature on the presentation of the video, great stuff once again!

This video genuinely helped me a lot. Havent been having a good past few months and the year ending is just kinda sad to me right now, but this helped.
Thank you patmac.
Why is he sounding depressed again like in his older videos?
He’s back!
It's so fascinating how just as I got back into liminal spaces, PatMac made a video about it around the same time after being gone for a while, in such a respectful and interresting way too
This might just be my favorite video of his, keep up the great work
Actually finished the video. Damn patmac, this was pretty thought-provoking. I used to binge your videos a lot n always enjoyed em but this one hit a little differently but in a really good way. I hope you're doing good and i wish you the best for your future memories and endeavors.
It's so odd hearing patmac covering a non media topic
He's back for New Year's Eve, Hey, Patmac, could you do more look backs on more Sonic merchandises such as plushies and action figures and so on?
Edit: like since 2020, I've been wanting you to do a look back on the toy Island Sonic Adventure and Sonic X action figures from 2000 to 2007
When the year was about to end the legend returned to give us 1 final banger
It's so good to hear your voice again.
He sounds the same but a little sadder
Has anybody noticed that his voice is more deeper now? And his thumbnails are different now.
He sounds low energy and depressed, it feels clear to me he's dealing with some issues currently.
I wish him well.
Great video. Thanks for using and highlighting the particular vocabulary. I've needed to look into this sort of stuff for a while.
Thanks for making this man, gave a lot of descriptions to terms I didn’t know I felt so strongly
