I knew a guy who’d go to punk shows in the 90’s in a full suit or tuxedo. Everyone would approach him and ask “are you lost? What are you wearing?” He would reply “well, punk is about rebelling, individuality and not conforming… and quite frankly, all of you look the exact fucking same”. They generally had no response.

I think Nickelback are at least a pretty shit band with cringe lyrics so I get people clowning on them, but with Imagined Dragons they actually have a good vocalist and really iconic sound that was nothing like other alternative bands at least at the point where they had their Radioactive style. It really feels to me like every five years is it's own musical generation, and every musical generation has that one band that becomes a meme due to being the pinnacle of inoffensive mainstream pop rock. I'd compare them more to groups like Sugar Ray and Smash Mouth.

I used to like Nickleback a long ass time ago, but as I grew up, their music became unlistenable. And my over all opinion of their music(Minus a couple songs) can be summed up as Strip Club music. Imagine Dragons, while not having a strip club vibe. Has such a forgettable and low effort sound to it. However, I do like one song of theirs.. So they can make decent music, but everything else theyve put out has been so bland.

@Underoath-Define The Great Line Fan Account [2-4] Lol, how did you get that impression? Because while it might have had a slight counrty sound(as did some Nirvana songs), theres a clear difference. I originally grew up on early 90s and older country music before I got into rock and post hardcore stuff around 10-11.
Also, I dont get the hate for country music minus everything after the late 90s( Thats actually understandable. Hell I hate it too). I've always loved classic country music, even once I'd decided that stuff like Underoath, Blessthefall, Taking back Sunday and all those bands was what appealed to me more. And the funny part is, some old country songs lyrical content really is not that far off from bands like Taking back Sunday and others. The only difference is the over all sound and sometimes a cultural difference since its country.

As a songwriter myself I’ve noticed that the songs I wrote about addiction, loss, and depression/mental health. Are always the ones I get complaints on about how real and genuine they are but when I write a song about how much I love my boyfriend or something that makes me happy it’s seen as less genuine somehow and people don’t like those songs as much even though they’re just as personal to me as talking about my struggles with heroin and fentanyl addiction. I totally get what you mean. It’s pretty sad to me that people walk around with that much hate for something. But I think I understand that too I used to be similar because when I felt like shit it made me feel better to project that on something else and when you find a group of others that do the same thing it’s validating ya know idk it’s sad but I also understand it

I don't know much about the music industry, but I know a lot about the writing industry, and there are great parallels between them. Creatives often have little to no saying how they are presented to the public if they sign with big names. Heck, sometimes they even have little control over how their work is edited. It's either that or spending the first two decades of your career reaching just a handful of people, if you're lucky.
Of course, that is a choice they made, so a lot of the fault is on them. But I think it's more important to them that they reach as much people as possible and spread their message (both with songs and charity works) than having marketing accuracy.

In my opinion I think the reason people feel that "darkness" in art is authentic, is because people use the art as a means of connecting through that art to help them channel that darkness in a healthier direction. The artist can express those dark emotions in ways that the fans feel have a understanding of how they're feeling. Happy or positive music on the other hand doesn't feel genuine because you really don't need to relieve and unload feelings of happiness and joy. Happiness already does that. A few months later, I was surprised 😂😂😂 Also, as a former Mormon myself, a lot of us leave bc of how LGBTQ individuals are treated in the church and become outspoken to try and change things. I find myself trying to like them, and have tried several times, but frankly I think their music kinda sucks. It isn’t hard enough (Metallica, tool), it isn’t edgy at all (white stripes), and the pure talent (Killers) and authenticity doesn’t sell either (AIC, Nirvana). Imagine Dragons has been my favourite band for around 5 years now. I just want to say a few things:
Firstly, Dan Reynolds recently said in an interview that the band doesn't conform to any genre - they are their own genre. It isn't the band's fault if their non-rock songs are on the rock charts.
Secondly, for some odd reason all their most successful songs have been their worst songs. The band has a discography of over 150 songs, and most "haters" have only heard maybe 10 or so of these.
Thirdly, I wouldn't call Imagine Dragons dark or edgy, but their latest album is incredibly emotional and explores darker themes, such as addiction and death.
For these three reasons, I disagree with your reasons for people hating the band. I think it is much simpler. People only hear the band's worst music, and dislike hearing it all the time. This is totally valid, and it's the reason why I stay off TikTok and Instagram, so I completely understand it.

I like how you brought up the darkness = authenticity aspect of art. For a long time I have felt I enjoyed music from artists when they were creating during a time of darkness in their lives. Whether it's depression, heartbreak, whatever, I felt an artist's best work of expression came from their suffering.
And I guess that's what makes it so relatable, right? The mass population knows what it's like to suffer and they want to hear other people going through similar experiences. They rarely experience happiness, so hearing happy, upbeat songs might be too unrelatable (but there was that period in time where people loved to listen to people rap about making money and fuckin hos, but maybe that was less about positivity and more about giving guys a fantasy to chase).
My personal example would be with the band Against Me! I absolutely love their music before Laura Jane Grace came out as trans. It has nothing to do with her being trans, but it has to do with what she endured keeping that secret in her life coupled with her younger, anarchistic, and anti-religious perspective. What you got was raw energy with screaming agony in their songs.
After coming out their music obviously changed. Age, influence, perspective, relief, it was a combination of things which made their sound go in a different direction.
I am glad she came out though, because she appears to be genuinely happy with where she's at in life now.

So their bland formulaic output is considered a betrayal. I saw them live back in like 2018 and they really did put on a great show. Definitely prefer their first two albums over the newer stuff, and they played a lot of that, including my favorite song from their first album, which wasn’t even a single. They have talent, they’re just more pop-rock than heavy but that doesn’t mean they have NO edge. Just not as much as other artists that aren’t walking that line between genres. So the issue isn’t so much whether they are good or not, cuz they’re great for pop-rock. They’re doing what that genre is meant to do. They issue is just whether or not people even like pop-rock to begin with. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea and that’s okay. And they're clearly successful on charts, so how come they make so much money when they're the most hated?
Remember even Nirvana got a lot of hate back then Music nerds said "Nirvana killed Rock music", now they're legends. Linkin Park, Coldplay also got the hate, but because Imagine dragons are more mainstream they get more hate.

Laugh all you want, their music has actually helped me to better understand myself back then, when I felt like my lost 10 year old self couldn't confide in anyone. Now i find myself in my 20's and still going back to these songs. Is it cringe? Of course, but it was my gateway to the music I love today: Pink Floyd, Talking Heads, The Clash or Grateful Dead. I will always defend Imagine Dragons ❤️

Your comments on authenticity and positive versus negative emotions got my thinking on that topic, because I genuinely do find it interesting.
My guess is that positive and happy emotions, or positive concepts like being a parent or having fun at a party, are just "easy". No one needs to write a song or listen to a song to help them understand those feelings. But to understand the depression, anxiety, hopelessness, or other darkness that you're feeling, framing it in a metaphorical song or poem may be the easiest way to express how you're feeling. Expressing negative emotions is frowned upon in our society (although it is getting better) and music is one of the only mediums where no one frowns upon you for expressing the darkness that you feel. You can just say "I love my family" at any time and everyone will be like "yeah dude that's awesome" but if you say "I have no hope and I want to die" people are going to give you weird looks. So why do you need to write a song about loving your family when you can just SAY that whenever you want and no one will judge you?
So therefore, "positive" music basically encroaches upon the territory of "negative" music, when it's one of the few safe havens for that negativity and darkness. And as an extension, positivity is frowned upon in music/art but negativity is frowned upon in real normal conversation. The everyday conversation has a "toxic positivity" problem.
That's my theory and for now I'm sticking to it! I'm curious if other people agree or disagree.

    • @CitizenKen1
      @CitizenKen1 Год назад

Thats a very interesting theory I’d agree with. But by that same logic do you think it’s possible that the most popular, time less, and universal liked songs are often centered around LOVE because love can reflect both positive and negative emotions?!
Primary surrounding attraction between woman and men. There is certainly no shortage of overly positive songs that become popular about how much we want the opposite sex on supperfical level but there just as many songs about the same feelings that draws us towards the negative feelings of longing for someone and or something and not receiving it. They all center around the same emotion of desire that everyone understands but we are not always good at putting into words in common every speech so music is also written about it!

    • @MasonzeroDigitalWorks
      @MasonzeroDigitalWorks Год назад +1

@@CitizenKen1 I think that's a great expansion on what I said, and I made me think it's less about positive vs negative, but really (like you said) about emotions that are difficult to put into words during normal conversation. Talking to your friends about how much you want someone can be a little weird. But put it into a song and everyone is fine. So yeah, music is a way to express difficult emotions, so easy-to-understand emotions put into songs are often scoffed at because they just feel simple. Not that they're not valid, but just that music is too deep of a medium to share such a simple concept.

Over saturation is a rly big part of it I believe. Radioactive/believer was used as these like place holder theme songs for like at least 4 cw shows like back to back. I remember specifically Riverdale & the 100 using them and I want to say the Katie Keene failure but that doesn't feel right.. Anywho I think also when you just like a song it can get played out to you cuz all you got out of the song was it was catchy and fun. Now when it's a song by a band you already like and/or you have some kinda deeper connection to the lyrics or it's linked to some kinda memory that really impacted you. The memory one is a very strong connection good or bad. There's many times I've seen songs be huuuuge triggers to SA victims where hearing it brings them right there instantly.
I've seen it do the same for positive super impactful 1's as well.
Anyways it's crazy cuz I think if maybe the songs didn't feel so 'empty' so too speak. When you hear the same song on 2 shows and 3 commercials in the same 90 minute block of time; it's pretty difficult for the song to feel impactful or meaningful in any way.
And when it feels like meaningless 'party-ish' music then it can get played out quickly.

When something feels disposable or replaceable it's treated as such.

This rock-adjacent dance-pop sound was probably the predominant sound of rock music through most of the 2010’s. Imagine Dragons were at the forefront of that, but it also meant soundalikes such as AJR and Walk the Moon were everywhere too & that was a sonic shift that was simply unwelcome to a large faction of fans of alternative music. I think it’s all part of the sinking realization of the fact of life that things that catered to you when you’re 20 years old are still going to cater to 20 year olds when you’re 40.
To me, most Imagine Dragons songs are okay. Very few are better than okay, and just a couple are terrible (I really can’t stand “Demons” or “Thunder”). But those two tracks aside, it is highly amusing to watch people get so worked up over something so mediocre and inoffensive.

My theory is that these rock-adjacent dance-pop bands you're talking about were signed and pushed by the major labels because it was the perfect music to license to commercials so they could make money off of it since they werent making much money from album sales anymore. They didnt care about finding the next Nirvana or Green Day, they went the safe and easy money making route pushing the stuff that would appeal to the most people possible. No more taking chances. When all the 90s alt rock bands were signed by major labels they were signed because the label hoped they would sell records. Selling their music to get played in commercials wasnt even thought of back then and in the last decade it was the priority.
Labels like Run for Cover records were putting out the "real" alternative rock music in the past decade but the major labels didnt sign them like they would have in past eras and passed on them for all the dance pop/indie pop bands with the hipster aesthetic.

I think another big reason for the hate is that Imagine Dragons ended up in an unfortunate position where their success meant that every other record label wanted bands that sounded just like them. Not only did we all get oversaturated by the band themselves, but there was so much other mainstream rock at the time that just sounded exactly like them and was just as bland, and I think most people are able to make that association back to the original and blame them for it. I love their first two records. I think they are really good alr rock/synth rock in modern age. But I have to admit I really dont like their really popular stuff...its not interesting that much and really commercial. Today I am part of larger community of musicians and am really fan of many different genres, heavy music, soft music, proggy music...but I´ll always come back to ID. Some of their stuff is really interesting and playfull. Have nice melodies, nice vibe. It´s not about sounding complex and shit but making music they feel like. I really like their last record, it´s turnaround towards their older stuff. Dan Reynolds is a guy that is very openminded and talks a lot about depression and lqbt stuff and tries to educate a world about them. I must say...in some of their songs are really heavy and dark themes, such as depression, lonelinnes, death of a loved one etc. but it´s not as much popular. I am just sad people don´t even give artist a chance and are mad about it immediatelly...it just makes me sad. Same goes for many more bands, but it´s a long story
I totally understand that they don´t have to be loved by everyone and it´s okay. But why hate all the time? I just recommend you all to give them a chance and try to make some research. Maybe you´ll find something interesting :)). And if you don´t like them? That´s okay, everyone has a different musical taste!

I don't think people are shitting on popular bands just because they're popular and because that's the cool thing to do. It's one thing to be able to hear a song and say "yeah that's not for me" but when these bands and songs get popular they become inescapable. If you are already luke warm on a song and then you hear it every time you turn on the radio or enter a grocery store you're going to just flat out hate it eventually and the more you hear a song you hate the more you will vocalize it. If the hate for a popular band dies down with their popularity, it isn't because their music is no longer tasteless or bland, it's because the people listening to it at that point will be the ones who actually enjoyed that band and who go out of their way to listen to it.
If everyone is forced to eat bologna sandwiches or not at all and then you ask them all what they thought of bologna you'll generally get a very negative sentiment.
If people are given the option to eat whatever kind of sandwich they want, and then you ask what the people who got bologna sandwiches what they think of bologna, you're going to get a much more positive reaction. Hopefully that made sense.

But WTF do I know, I find myself reaching back to Layne Staley, Kurt Cobain, Tool, and then to more 80s and 90s metal and 70s and 80s punk, since we seem to be lacking much rock or harder alternative these days (Jack White might be one of the only things of any interest that is somewhat “current”, probably because his talent is just so hard to deny….oh, the Foo Fighters, Hawkins tribute at Wembley was pretty decent as well)

It was the official position of your church that black people were lesser in the eyes of God until 1978, and it is still the church's official position that same sex marriage should not be allowed and that same sex attraction is sinful. You can claim to not be a bigot, but you still openly endorse and support a deeply bigoted institution, which does more to show your true colors than your words ever will.

I like Imagine Dragons. They made a few dope songs that I find fitting in my dramatic music playlist. I like how malleable they are. They have at least one song for each of my longer playlists. They made a couple themes for League of Legends, which I used to play. Arcane got their song Enemy. I like them.

Personally, their songs feel like they're creating really good and creative stock sounds for background listening. The kind that doesn't distract you in the supermarket but makes you really good about being there. And there's nothing wrong with that, I love it when I recognise them in movies. Would not listen to the album, but love hearing them on the radio.

You nailed this one. If you don't like something, leave it alone and move on with your life. I especially resonate with what you said about "good music" HAVING to come from a dark place. That mindset is way too narrow and limiting. Art is about expression, and it's very beneficial as an artist to have some modicum of balance in the things you are expressing. Great example used too, because as someone who loves brutal, dark shit; I can still respect the hell out of a song that's speaking on being a better human and parent to your child. I don't have kids, but I've had experience trying to be a positive influence in the lives of children. That topic is as human as it gets and there is a LOT of weight behind it. Great video Finn 👍

I'm surprised people consider Imagine Dragons' songs uninspired or meaningless. Most of their hit songs (yes, including thunder) came from Dan's past experiences as he was bullied growing up and has learned to deal with his emotions, especially after losing his sister. The songs sure do seem a lot more unique than every other current pop rock band that only sings about falling in love with someone. I think most people either just don't listen to the lyrics or they like to hop on the bandwagon of hate because "who else would we make fun of?"

Other older musicians hating on them so much and that publicly without certain critique maybe shows some fear they are not that relatable anymore. Idk, just enjoy music

I actually really liked Radioactive when it first came out and had the thought that they were pioneering the future of mainstream radio rock. I was really excited to see how their music would evolve, but in terms what I enjoy, it felt like it devolved. I imagine rock fans feel a bit stronger about their music than other pop bc it's almost like a bait and switch as opposed to being something you can easily just ignore as "not made for me". They seem like really nice people though so I'm way more hesitant to dogpile on them than I was with Nickelback.
I think your point about that pop country song misses the mark a bit because that song actually does seem authentic as opposed to one of the biggest country hits in recent memory, "Fancy Like". A song like "Sweet Avenue" reminds me of a quote from the Van Gogh Dr who episode: "Pain is easy to portray, but to use your passion and pain to portray the ecstasy and joy and magnificence of our world, no one had ever done it before." I think a lack of passion is the bigger musical crime than a lack of darkness or pain.

"Sollamander" Speaking of Radioactive and mainstream rock music in that time period, the 2010s would have been defined by a lot of Electronic Rock if most Boomer and Gen X Rock fans didn't bitch about it. Instead of innovation and modern influence in that decade, we just got stuff that sounded like The Black Keys, GVF etc instead of embracing bands such as BMTH, NBT, Starset, Royal Blood, Highly Suspect, Nothing More, Badflower, Stand Atlantic, Holding Absence, Yours Truly etc

I think this analysis is spot on until you get to the darkness part. I think it’s almost the opposite-the lack of anything but this general positivity is what gives an air of inauthentic music. When your music only explores a single or few emotions, lyrical contents, completely agree that’s immature and only scratching the surface of the human condition. The same can be said for countless metal bands.

I listen to depressing music like The Smiths, Radiohead, Elliot Smith, etc. but I'm also a fan of All Time Low, Walk The Moon, BTS and other Kpop groups, etc. I would say that some people maybe just don't get what it's like to be the other person. There's these "real music people" that don't know and wouldn't know what it's like just to let themselves be "normies" and just to have fun if they keep their minds closed. The same way that the majority of people that listen to popular music, also don't get the "real music" people, who identifies themselves with the art and can actually evoke some feelings that most popular music can't. So these "real music" people would get resentful at the "normies" just because they think (subconsciously or consciously) that they don't understand what they are feeling. And maybe also these kinds of people already have personal and mental health issues (because tbh, most people that have these certain kind of music taste made their personal and life issues as a driving force to like the "real music" and become one of the most hardcore fans - I think I'm one of them here lol). It's a kind of therapy that they get from proudly hating these things, the way they also get the therapeutic feelings from listening to their favorite artists that can actually say something about them.
