Wow. This is great! The school of the West's most distinctively Western philosopher! (Whose philosophical thought was recovered by Latin-speaking scholastic thinkers in the Renaissance of the Twelfth Century, and integrated into the intellectual culture of Western Europe by the likes of Peter Abelard, the radical Averroists of the University of Paris [such as Siger of Brabant], Albertus Magnus and his Dominican protege Thomas Aquinas.) Why not pronounce it the Latin way: the "lie-SEE-um"? -- the Lyceum. Anyone here with a knowledge of Greek wish to coach us on how to pronounce 'Lykeion'? I believe it might be "Look-ay-on". .....I learned in college that 'Psyche' is supposed to be pronounced "Soo-kay" (rather than "Sy-kee").
....Okay, when I say "the Latin way", I mean the pronunciation mode of English Latin teachers prior to World War I. Even to this day, we pronounce 'Cicero' as "SIS-uh-ro" rather than "KiK-uh-ro" and 'Caesar' as "See-zer" rather than "KY-zer", etc.. This is Latin in the 'traditional English mode of pronunciation' (roughly 1600 to 1900). We still use that mode for pronouncing classical person's names as well as place names (such as the Tiber River -- "TY-bur" rather than "TIH-bur" -- for the river that runs through Rome).
I was here but skipped this, did Zeus temple which had but a few standing columns. The acropolis n agoda got me beat. Blast need to lose weight the hindrance to travel discovery.😡
I love the purple trees!! (Jacarandas?)
Nice!
