Wow, what a comprehensive list! I had exactly the same problem with you with exactly the same song - "Tragedy". If You've ever read the story behind how it was recorded, it'll make you love it even more - it makes a mockery of the cut and paste music they make today. But there was one Bee Gees song that meant even more to me...
My list is coloured by a lot of Australian/ New Zealand acts (*) that most people here wont ever have heard of - but if there are any Aussies/Kiwis here, there are some mightily beloved bands on the list:
40 Spirit in the Sky Norman Greenbaum

    33 Warm Ride Graham Bonnet
32 Storm In My Soul Carol Lloyd Band** (two stars for being a local act)
31 Kings Of The World Mississippi*
30 Signs Five Man Electric Band
29 Emma Little River Band* (America got LRB past their best. The first two album and 6 singles were fantastic -- after that they became too emasculated)
28 Hit and Run Jo Jo Zepp and The Falcons*

    26 Slipstream Sherbet*
    25 One Bad Apple Osmonds
24 Who Listens To The Radio Sports*
    23 Skydiver Daniel Boone
22 Coming Down Angels* (I think I have seen this band live more times than any other, just through sneaking into pubs when I was 16 to see them)
21 This is Tomorrow Bryan Ferry
    20 Gudby T'Jane Slade

It's greatly to your credit and SOT that you did this Pete. It's a great leap forward in our musical appreciation when we lose our youthful prejudices and snobbery and realise just how talented some of these 'pop' artists of the 70s were. I know it opened my eyes when I finally 'got' the Carpenters (What a singer she was), ELO, the Bee Gees, Wings, 10cc, Billy Joel, Hall and Oates etc; and the sheer ability and songwriting craft behind the music. Some of these artists are a revelation when we open our ears to them. Fantastic selection and many of these would make my list also.

Interesting piece of Karen Carpenter trivia - she's universally acknowledged as one of the greatest singers ever, but her vocal range is only a half tone broader than Taylor Swift's. In fact, they are almost exactly the same - KC is D3-F5 and TS is E3 - F#5. Yet TS uses so much autotune she sounds like a Dalek (especially live). Clearly, there's more to being a great singer than your voice!

I love AM pop of the 70's. I was very young in the 1970s (I am 49 now) and these songs bring back memories. I often hear these songs and remember where I was or what I was doing, such as on vacation. We had two AM top 40 stations when I was a kid and one of them flipped when I was about 6. The other station was a powerhouse and nothing was cooler than hearing it thousands of miles away. I always liked Mandy by Barry Manilow because my beloved childhood dog was named Mandy (we got her before the song). When I first learned how to download music online I downloaded so many 70's songs, I used to roller skate to My Sharona and really got into them and Blondie. This is a great list and makes me want to listen to many of them. One of a song not mentioned by anyone so far was Day By Day by Godspell, loved that. Another go to even today is I Think I Love You by the Partridge Family,. Then there is Cher's 70's songs like Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves. I also like folkier songs like Summer Breeze, Year of the Cat and Cat's In The Cradle, and Morning Has Broken. I could go on.

There are too many great pop radio tunes to make a definitive list, so I’ll just give 5 of my favorites.
    5. Peg - Steely Dan: I’ve been getting into Steely Dan pretty heavily lately. Just got all their studio albums on CD and been listening to them non-stop. “Peg” is my favorite song from the Aja album, and probably my favorite Steely Dan single overall, for its incredible chord progressions, funky rhythm, great guitar solo, and simple yet amazing chorus.
    4. Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl) - Looking Glass: Pete turned me onto this song a couple years ago when he mentioned it in his favorite songs of all time show. It has such a great 70s pop feel and those vocals get stuck in my head all the time
    3. Mr. Blue Sky - Electric Light Orchestra: This is just one of the greatest feel-good songs ever. Such a happy, bouncy energy to it that it’s really difficult to feel sad when this is playing.
    2. You’re My Best Friend - Queen: My favorite of Queen’s hits, and a top 5 love song ever written. I’m not generally a big fan of Queen’s hits because I think their deeper album cuts are pretty much always better, but this one is just as good as any of my other favorite Queen songs
    1. Year of the Cat - Al Stewart: Probably my favorite song of all time at the moment. I just think this song is the perfect pop song, being more complex and interesting than most other pop songs, but keeping to that simple 3-chord structure that makes it easy to listen to and super catchy.

Love it! Totally share your appreciation of 70’s AM pop. My only quibble is your Hall & Oates pick-gotta be “Sara Smile” instead of “Rich Girl.” To my mind, “Sara Smile” embodied the R&B harmonic and slow-burn rhythmic sensibilities which were the quintessence of 70’s pop. Really enjoyed the stroll down nostalgia lane, though. Thank you, Pete!

Not for me- love Sara Smile, but Rich Girl has sentimental value for me.

AM Radio was superb in the 70’s, so many great songs...back when pop mattered. Btw, Ozark Mountain Daredevils have some really great albums, worth digging a little deeper with them Pete!

I like the artist choices but I'd go with different songs: ""Dreaming" would be my Cliff Richard song, "Runaway" for Jefferson Starship, "My Life" for Billy Joel, "Coming Up" for McCartney, "What a Fool Believes" for the Doobies, "The Things We Do For Love" for 10cc, "Delilah" or "It's Not Unusual" for Tom Jones (were they '70s or 60s?), Bond theme song "Nobody Does It Better" for Carly Simon, "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" for Elton, "Weekend in New England" for Barry Manilow, "How Deep is Your Love" for the Bee Gees, "Hey Nineteen" for Steely Dan but I like your choices for Queen and Supertramp. Also others would include "Reminiscing" or "Cool Change" by Little River Band, Seger's "Still the Same," "Magnet and Steel," "How Bout Us," "Steal Away" and Dolly Parton's "Here You Come Again" is great, among others. Gotta have Donna Summer on the list, too, she was huge back then, so "On the Radio."

Cliff and Elton - such prolific and enduring performers.
My favourite CR singles didn’t chart well in the UK - probably doesn’t matter to Cliff who’s currently on 146+ UK single releases and counting (since he started in 1958)!
      Cliff Richard -
      ‘Silvery Rain’ (1971 #27) ruclips.net/video/YQrz2oaTcf0/видео.html
      ‘Flying Machine’ (1971 #37) ruclips.net/video/wu8caZnbGbg/видео.html

Loved the top forty show..surprisingly because I’m a sixties rock guy and by the way my favorite all time band ..the one I always go back to is CSNY with and without Neil young. But I loved the top forty show..I could see the joy in your eyes thinking about your mom and dad and how that music related to them and that is so refreshing to see and that’s why I love your show so much, especially with with what’s happening in the world right now. You’ve turned me on to so much new music and I thank you for that. By the way, I’m 72 but young at heart and music was my savior in Vietnam and still is today...✌️

I love black metal, but I also love yacht and soft rock. Even Type O Negative covered "Summer Breeze"!
My top ten (I can't put them in order) would be:
    Ace "How Long"
Elton John "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road"
Todd Rundgren "We Gotta Get You A Woman"
    Harry Nilsson "Without You"
ABBA "Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie (A Man After Midnight)
    The Records "Starry Eyes"
    The Boomtown Rats "Rat Trap"
    The Kinks "Muswell Hillbilly"
any two Babys songs. I love them all.
    Thanks, Pete.
Edit: I grew up on lots of Barry Manilow, too! Also, Dr Hook is great. I may need to make a mix disc of your list.

Good list - Great to hear a mention for the fantastic Kinks! One of my most treasured singles from the 1970s (not even a chart hit in the UK) was by them.
      The Kinks - ‘Father Christmas’ (1977) ruclips.net/video/i2X0JzlO8SM/видео.html
Always hard to choose Elton John and Abba hits - so many!
      Elton John - ‘Rocket Man’ (1972) ruclips.net/video/6Uje4RDymuQ/видео.html
      Abba - ‘SOS’ (1975) ruclips.net/video/NJzcqO77sW0/видео.html
The early 70s was a great time for ‘heavier’ rock singles - owned all of these (before the albums took over). Perhaps something of interest? :D
Juicy Lucy - ‘Who Do You Love’ (1970) ruclips.net/video/xFYZ1JrOapY/видео.html
Frijid Pink - ‘House Of The Rising Sun’ (1970)
      ruclips.net/video/MeByCULRnqY/видео.html
      Free - ‘All Right Now’ (1970) ruclips.net/video/Pjaa_xuVpDs/видео.html
      Deep Purple - ‘Black Night’ (1970) ruclips.net/video/ea3qQmWo_Nw/видео.html
      Atomic Rooster - ‘Devil’s Answer’ (1971) ruclips.net/video/Dh3U1weqpgE/видео.html

    *Cheech & Chong.*

Pete, I'm your age, excellent list. I'm glad you brought up the Bee Gees. I went to see Jaws with my neighbor and his dad and after watching at the time a shocking movie we got in the car and "Fanny" was playing, hows that for an odd connection. Also, my dad (RIP) played the radio in the car anytime we went anywhere and many songs remind me of him and doing things with him. Very nostalgic indeed.

rocky-o Also remember ‘the other hit’ from 1972 UK charts. Favourite on the mini bus taking us (school football/soccer squad) to visit distant opponents - and crush them! Nothing in the song that inspired us to do that of course - just something in the water!
