I find the best way to get rim tape to sit tight against the rim is put a tube in it for the first day after you put on the new tubeless rim tape. That tube will push that tape right up against the rim and will make it perfect

I switched all six of my (not mountain bikes) to 165mm cranks. For years, I had always wondered why I wasn't quite as comfortable on any of my bikes as I would've liked to be. I'm 5'3" with a 29.5-inch inseam, somebody suggested that I ought to be trying shorter crank arms.
The transformation was staggering. I could spin for hours on end without even thinking about it. Just for fun, I bought me a cheap 160mm crankset to see if that would be even better, and it wasn't: those were just too short for my liking; I switched them over between several bikes to verify. They put me a little higher on every bike than I'd like, and pedaling felt like I was shuffling my feet.

170mm cranks feel more natural to me. I ran a 28 tooth on my trail bike for climbing and a 36 tooth on my street hardtail. Less teeth easier to climb. More teeth more top speed. Great vid as always. It's assume to have lots of bikes. I just ordered my fifth one🫣

I had 170s but now have 165s. I can't feel difference but helps with pedal strikes. I do notice difference in chainring size far as speed goes. Looks like your buddy did a good job with the DT Swiss tape!! Bike looks great with those wheels & tires🤙🏻

Not sure if you knew or not but your derailleur clutch is not on. When you were describing your chain stay protector, I noticed it wasn’t on, that will prevent your chain from slapping as well.

I have one of these, it's my only bike and I love taking it on single track. I am pretty lightweight, and don't ride rowdy, so I run low low Psi tubless with no inserts, around 17f/18r, with goodyear newton tires that come on some of these and the same stock tape that they seem to have done a good job on from the factory. So far only one flat that I completely deserved. Ive thought about changing cranks, because I get lots of pedal strikes with 175's. The stock front ring is a 34t, I swapped it to a 30t and it was a major improvement living in the PNW. Love the Breezer!

I do t know what you where running when you got the flats but from years of experience I’ve had absolute great experience using Maxxas Tubeless tires & tubeless stem & Stan’s sealant. You do that & flats will be few & far between. And the feel of tubeless on the trail is amazing & you can run lower air pressure depending on the terrain I ride in area that are extremely rocky steep, loose & down right nasty in the dry summer months. Dusty & loose.

Yeah.... Lots of people continue to ride 2.5" and above tires. Cushy, but slow!
I almost ride rigid exclusively. So predictable and efficient. For chainrings, I go to a 34 X 15 through 20 - depending on terrain (Single speed) the larger gearing is ever so slightly more efficient. See my profile picture... Might be a little obsessed.

In my teens, my friends and I used to ride our BMX bikes everywhere, on all types of terrain. Rigid mountain bike just seems like a large BMX with bigger wheels, better brakes, and more gears. I can see the appeal in that.

  • @impaledface7694
    @impaledface7694 2 месяца назад +1

I prefer longer cranks like 175mm, but that's mostly for steep hard climbs, and me having a 35in inseam.... 170mm is a nice size too, and changing to a smaller ring is smart. The tires look perfect for that terrain if you want lots of grip. Perfect trail for a rigid, heck even more gnarly would be nice.

definitely the right move going to a 32 tooth front chainring. I like a 32, even a 30. I have had some bikes that even a 28 is good. Especially if you really need the climbing power. My bikes are generally 7, 8, or 9 speed. I like the lower climbing gear because I hate climbing. lol

First thing I did on my new bike last year was change out the chainring, it came with a 32t, I swapped it to a 30t since our front range climbs are fairly steep and I'm nowhere near skinny enough to ride a 32t on our climbs haha.

I'm 6'3" with long legs and my knees get on better with 165mm cranks. I can only get Shimano Deore/SLX in 170 or 175mm though (I've seen some specs online they are doing them in 165mm but can't find them for sale).
There are cheap MTB GXP cranks sold in China like from CruzBikes (and another two companies have straight out copied their design recently!) But feel they may not be strong enough for taller/heavier riders. They have allowed me to cheaply find out what length is best for my knees though.
Forget issues with pedal strikes. Shorter cranks and thinner pedals can only go so far. Technique is where you stop pedal strikes.

Funny that you also are going to 170mm cranks, which tend to be 'standard' even on smaller bikes. Might even want to consider going smaller, say 165mm. I'm building a full rigid (Ritchey Ascent) and went with 165mm cranks/32t ring, down from 170mm on my other bikes. Will be curious to see if I notice any difference.
BTW, I also look forward to hearing more about the breezer thunder, & comfort on that steel fork as time goes on. I have a full rigid alu 'emtb' that I threw a RS Judy fork on bc as a bigger rider, my weight & already really heavy bike on a rigid alu fork was not a good combo on trails. The Judy plus better tires has made a massive difference. Hoping things are different with the Ascent on the steel fork. But I'm setting it up more as a gravel touring bike for fire roads & pavement but where I can dip onto some occasional single-track.

Stan's tape is impossible to get perfect using thumb only, you need to use a rag or microfiber towel to slide it over it.
But I still had issues with leaks, but only front tyre my front has been cursed for 2 years now I think that was with two layers a si had to use that to get it to cover edge to edge. 🤔😜 I've tried WTB tape an same issue, tape moved from the edge. Gorilla tape did that too, but at slower rate. I tried with one layer. The tape was easier to get to stick, and was thinner, conformed better, and covered dedge to edge on 30mm Dt Swiss rim. But maybe I need two layers, maybe tape moved. Not sure what to do. Maybe it's the cornering, and type of riding I do, making the tyre push the tape. I don't know.
