The line “I live like I’ve got missing limbs for you” has always, for me, almost meant like a phantom limb pain. When people lose a part of them they will sometimes feel deep visceral pain from the limb that isn’t there anymore, and so in that same way you can still feel phantom pain from someone who isn’t there anymore.
I think this is meant to be taken in two ways. He lives like he has missing limbs for her (as in losing her is like losing his limbs) and he still feels her even though she isn't there anymore, like you're saying with the phantom limb pain. And I think he is recognizing that he is living for her (as in living with her as his reason of being) without being complete prior to her.
Finding Sleep Token was sort of like going through intense therapy. Their songs stirred up all that dark shadow work I was avoiding. Their songs feel SO personal to so many of us.
The “I’d give anything to balance your conviction with certainty. To fall asleep without you lying next to me. To sever my connection with everything.” Hits me so deep. To feel everything all it once and wish so deeply with everything you have that it would all go away. But it’s just like he said in “Mine”, “Viciously reminding me still: I’m born to believe.” Giving up isn’t part of who he is.
Seeing Vessel perform this live with just him and his guitar was… 😭😭😭 I definitely feel like this is his most personal song…it’s very specific…and when he says, “And it still makes my blood run thin to remember what you are to him”….I think we all went, “Wait….whaaaaa?”
I feel like what he meant by “I live like I’ve got missing limbs for you” because she was such a part of his being that now that she’s gone and he looks at himself like he lost a part of himself. But he says that he’s living like this for her. Because this is what SHE wanted, not him.
absolutely fantastic. love to see an active listener dissect lyrics. The ultimate beauty of sleep token is understanding the lyrics while vibing with the instrumental.
I rarely comment on YT videos. But I wanted to mention how much I appreciate your videos. I appreciate that you take time to genuinely digest the lyrics. Not just to react to them but to let them ruminate on you in real time. Keep it up. Thank you.
This song is packed with poetry so there's a ton to unpack. My interpretation: 1. "Just let me know if nowadays the outer realms of heaven don't keep up with the charm offensive anymore." I think this is about her 'new' relationship with "him"' the new guy. Her new relationship is like heaven to her (the outer rounds of it at least). If that relationship doesn't live up to what she wants. If it doesn't stay on the charm offensive (keeps charming her, stays active, on the attack) then 'let me (Vessel) know because I'll still be here.' 2. I think it's "And I'd give anything to borrow your indifference" I'd drink you in. To temper your belief in all my promises. To swallow my desire and choke on it." He wishes he could be as indifferent as she is about their relationship. To drink her in and let her fill him, to be like her. He also wishes he could 'temper' he belief (make it harder to break, like tempered steel) so she'd believe him when he professes his love. 3. "My polite advances won't last for long." He's making advances in regards to her. Propositions. For now they're polite. They won't be for long. Keep this in mind when you get to The Summoning (especially its outro). 4. "To fall asleep without you next to me." He either can't sleep or he does sleep but has to imagine her next to him in order to have a chance of even getting to sleep. 5. "Blessings rain on battles in the heaven's arms." Their relationship is located in the arms of heaven. There are "battles" in a relationship but so long as they remain in heaven (in the relationship) blessings *will* rain down upon them. 6. "I live like I have missing limbs for you." I think this is meant to be taken in two ways. He lives like he has missing limbs for her (as in losing her is like losing his limbs) and he still feels her even though she isn't there anymore. And I think he is recognizing that he is living for her (as in living with her as his reason of being) without being complete prior to her.
Powerful words, my friend. Thank you for taking the time to share this with us. Many people wish for things, but few take the time and effort to turn those wishes into reality. The truth is, until you take action, your dreams will remain just that-dreams.
24:58 the album gets full circle for me here, cause in Atlantic he talks about blue light over murder while his burying his body underwater, meaning ambulances come for his rescue as he tries to end his life in a bathtub. For me this is the sound of ambulance sirens muffled as someone is drowning underwater, really heavy...
If their idealized life they wanted isn’t everything they thought it would be let him know. Once the honeymoon phase of that change they made is over, he’ll be there.
Finally getting to hear this song live on the last tour was equal parts gut wrenching and magical. To take it back to the beginning of the album, I saw a theory that Atlantic is him waking up in the hospital after an attempt to unalive himself and the rest of the album is how he got to that point. This is him finally giving in to his loss and giving up. Especially with lyrics like “sever my connection with everything”.
I'm a big fan of this theory. And to add on to it, the end of this song reminds me of sirens distorted through water, and it gets louder as he's being pulled toward the surface, screaming. Cycles back around to Atlantic in the storyline after he tried to throw himself into the ocean (Fall For Me). This album has so much depth (ha).
I think there was an affair because when he said “I live like I’ve got missing limbs for you.” He SPITS out the “for you”. He said it with so much anguish and disgust that an affair seems so likely.
I've absolutely loved your interpretations of these songs and this video was another hit. That sound at the end, i always heard those sounds as Vessel coming up out of the water and the crackling was him FINALLY reaching the surface. Through the entire album there was a constant image of water and now, at the end, he's on land and ready to go back to eden.
I always felt like the end of the song sounded like static , like representing severing that connection/communication. Like it starts with the sound of what it feels like knowing that's what you have to do, the disoriented/spinning/panicking/disassociation/anxious/depressing feelings of knowing it is the only and final way to stop the endless cycle/letting go because it can be very hard sometimes when you still have love for them but know it is the only way and the very end is finally making that decision and cutting that communication/connection off. A very heavy song.
Vessel plays this live and you can feel this heart break it is really powerful to drowning in High Water to missing Limbs what a trip. To the ending leading to the intro to chokehold
The way I just stopped what I was watching when i got the notification, made a bevy, and braced for impact. I saw you get lost in the middle section, there was a lot going on. While it's not my favorite style of their music, the lyrics are🤌. Time to go back to Eden🤗
Holy cats, I was the first view on this video. I don't think that has happened in my life. lol I've said it a few times before on other videos, but I love your takes on these songs and your interpretations of the lyrics. It's great stuff and we all appreciate you.
Don't apologize for stopping the video. That's why we are here 😊 Your interpretations are really good and puts another twist to the lyrics and dealing with Atlantic. Self harm is a result of his feelings and trying to cope with the feelings that other person/god evokes in him. But also the ending of this song ties into Chokehold from the next Album TMBTE. He has the feeling of still being attached to this other and the ending of this song ends with distortion which picks up at the beginning of Chokehold. And the lyris "Show me that which I cannot see, even, if it hurts me, even if I can't sleep, Show me the way". He's begging for solace and an end to his torment that could be referenced to missing a limb such as with a person who has had an amputation of a limb due to illness or injury. The limb "feels" luke its still there. That's also said in the lyrics "without you lying next to me" because he feels like they're there with him when he tries to sleep and can't. You are extremely appreciated for your take on these lyrics and I hope it's helping you with your own emotional healing. I believe it has helped a lot of ST fans, myself included and we thank you for sharing your thoughts. If I don't see you again before Christmas, i hioe you have a great holiday with your family and friends. Until I catch you again later 😂 Merry Christmas 🎄🎁🎄 Worship ❤
I take this song as he was once so close to this person that she was a part of him and now she’s no longer there but he still feels her presence he misses her so much. Just like missing limb syndrome in amputee victims. I dunno. It’s such an incredibly personal song it’s hard to really pin point.
The ending of missing limbs matches pretty well the beginning of Chokehold, which is the first song on the next album. Missing limbs feels like a bit of a turning point for Vessel. He is in the absolute depths of his despair, and wishing to give anything to escape it. Then we get the static ramping up in an ascending and then disconnecting. Then we come in next with Chokehold with the reverb static and we get Vessel getting angry and starting to fight to regain himself.
Yeah i love this song so much. Really like your views on these songs as well. I've always liked the idea of the missing limbs being a tie in to the self harm the way you mentioned it. But i also always like how to me, it sounds a lot like him comparing it to phantom pains as well. Even though he's coming to terms with the fact that its gone and he will never get it back. He still feels the pain as if it was still there.
I agree with that scenario. Vessel is feeling the loss of an extension of himself. That's the reason for the static/distortion that ties into Chokehold at the beginning. "Show me that which I cannot see, even though it hurts me" are pleading lyrics that just gut you.
I feel that this song represents the conflicting desires that exist within a strained relationship. So often do the lyrics' meanings contradict each other. Primarily three different ones. The desire to stay together and the optimism of "blessings rain on battles in the heaven's arms" The inability to let go "Live like I've got missing limbs for you" And the desire to be able to let go. Of her, and possibly, based on that last line here, let go of life itself or who he is. "And my polite advances won't last for long The eager apprehension is wearing off I'd give anything To balance your conviction with certainty To fall asleep without you lying next to me To sever my connection with everything"
I appreciate the amount of time and effort you put into your videos. I always enjoy watching these and really do enjoy the life lessons you apply to the lyrics and even the musical breakdowns.
I don't know what passage it is in the Bible but it says If Thy Left Arm Iffends the, Cut It Off " or something like that. So, it could mean they've broken apart and he still feels connected. That's why he's feeling"missing limbs ". Just a thought 🤔
This song is such a juxtaposition to his harder stuff, but I love me an acoustic vessel Can’t wait to see your reactions to the rest of Take Me Back To Eden!
This feels like a break in the relationship. Like he is talking before, during, and after them. Feels like he wants to be her peace. To help her want to stay, while also wishing he could turn his own pain off. Being with someone can be more depressing than it would be without them. And when you do separate the love dosent stop. And trying to learn life without them and how you can't help someone anymore. That pain or learning to live without someone is so hard. When they were a constant, good or bad days. I feel like i didnt explain this well. I cant always seem to get what i feel inside out into words.... but vessle can for me. 😅
I think when he’s talking about what they did before and what you are to him , I think he’s referring to who he used to be. An entirely different person. “They” Meaning him and her in the past. Yada yada
Life ARE made of choices, and a Man is made of scars..... Every choices you MAKE, you NEED to left behind something you once had. And everything, in order to make you grow, Will hurt!!!! Accept The life and The truth as It is.... Let It ALL flow With The Wind, be strong, be Brave, FIGHT, cause If you DONT FIGHT and dont make UP your own choices and scars and dont pay the price for the things you want, you'll need someone who easily Will Not have interest in you......... I mean, girls. Vessel's way to learn This was The worst. Worship 🙏🏻
When you get to Chokehold, the first song on TMBTE, I highly recommend listening to the end of this one into Chokehold. They go together too well to not have been intentional, the way Missing Limbs ends and Chokehold begins
You touch on many difficult topics with your interpretation of these lyrics, from religion to manliness. What are those things, and where do they come from? Having deconstructed my faith during college (currently i identify as a stong athiest) its not an easy question, and even thinking about losing it is frightening. On manliness, to be a man is support the family. To provide and protect.
Not just harm. Missing limbs are also associated with 'ghost feelings' it's extremely common for amputees to still feel their missing limbs. In the same way, when someone leaves your life, you still feel them there sometimes.
I think when he’s talking about what they did before and what you are to him , I think he’s referring to who he used to be. An entirely different person. “They” Meaning him and her in the past. Yada yada

He wishes he could be as indifferent as she is about their relationship. To drink her in and let her fill him, to be like her. He also wishes he could 'temper' he belief (make it harder to break, like tempered steel) so she'd believe him when he professes his love.
