The pistol you found is mid late 1800s to early 1900s brake top revolver, it is a cartridge gun probably a 32 short or 38 short. It is not black powder

Looks like it could be a Colt double action revolver. If it is, at the very top of the grip (handle) on the side would say ‘Colt’. If not a Colt, it could be any number of revolvers built in the 19th or early 20th century by manufacturers long since gone out of business. Good luck!
