      They cut the appendices from Steven Erickson's books somewhere around book 6 because they were getting too long to publish. I'm particularly miffed about that one because six books into that series the appendix would have been an absolute lifeline.

    I do enjoy Pat talking about his thought process and how he doing. He is a really likable person. But please, who ever is managing this chanel, stop with these click-bait titles that clearly do not keep their promises. Yes, there is some new world building stuff, but it is not the "NEW" and big thing it is said out to be. Honestly, if ever Pat announces a release date for book 3, I'm likely to miss it on this channel as I will probably think it's another click bait title.

      The analogy was ridiculous.
      Your parents asking "when are you going to have a baby?" Means they see potential and are pressuring him to create something brand new.
      The difference is, us fans are asking him to FINISH something. He released a book almost 15 years ago that was clearly part 1 of 3 in a intricately designed saga. He knows how the 3rd book will go, as he probly did when he wrote the first one. But instead of letting the rest of us know how the story ends, he is busy raking in money and making excuses.
      We aren't asking "when are you going to have a baby?"
      We are asking "when are we going to meet this baby we have heard so much about?"
      I fear Patrick is another GRRM. He will drown in money and fame when HBO makes a King Killer show and never release the final chapter.
      Great writers with nothing to lose turn into greedy producers willing to forget the ones that really used to love what they do
      With no pressure, wrote one of the best ever
      Now that he's under it to make more
      And make more better
      When he talks about it more
      You know what is wrote and rewrites is no better

  • @menghao737
    @menghao737 3 года назад +56

    I can't imagine how that pressure must feel. It's gotta be pretty annoying, because it only exists because of how good the first two books are, like he has written himself into a corner trying to live up to the expectations he has set for himself. And how exactly did he manage that, he probably wonders every night. Do people think that Patrick doesn't wish that third book came to him as easily as the first two? And those probably weren't that easy for him to write in the first place, so imagine how much exponentially harder it is to pull off a satisfying ending to such an epic trilogy. The fact that he didn't already crap something out in a fit of desperation is proof of how much he cares about this story, he wants to get it right for the characters and the world he is trying to convey, for himself, and for us. It's not right that some people treat this author, this man, like he's scammed them by not finishing this story as soon as possible. As someone who wishes he had nearly half as much talent as a writer as Mr. Rothfuss here, I can tell you that writing is hard, and putting your writing out there for public consumption is extremely hard. The last thing he wants to do is put something out that feels inferior to the first two novels, if anything he must surpass them. We are often our own worst critics, and he might even be having a crisis of confidence, but even if he never finishes the trilogy then oh well, that's life. He could have been run over by a bus the day after publishing the first book and we never would have gotten the second, we should be thankful for every piece of art this man produces and stop treating it as if he owes us this. If he decided he had to stop writing for his mental health tomorrow, I would support his decision, as saddened at the thought of never getting book 3 as I would be, he doesn't owe it to me or anyone else. It will be done when it is done, or it won't, and the world will go on nonetheless.

      @menghao737 3 года назад +4

      @@Samuel-zs9lh Thank you. It's funny, even just writing a little comment like this can be a little nerve wracking, and I'm just saying what I feel, what I think, in as frank a manner as possible. You just never know how people are going to react, it might be total cringe. But it's nice when people react positively, when I come back a few weeks later and find thirty likes on a fat paragraph like this when most probably look at it and think tl;dr and can't be bothered. Might not be a lot of likes compared to other comments, but it makes my day a little brighter to know that thirty or so of my fellow humans took time out of their day to read something I wrote, and at least like it if not come out and say they agree with it wholeheartedly. And a "Bravo!"? I know you're feeling what I'm saying. But if writing comments on social media can be a little nerve wracking for a somewhat shy person such as myself, trying to finish a trilogy with literally millions of people figuratively breathing down your neck along with a publisher that gave you an advance going on a decade ago, that has to be so much worse as to be on an entirely different level to a traumatizing degree, even for someone as naturally charismatic as Patrick. I both envy and pity this man in the best ways possible, thinking he is in a very enviable and pitiable position. It's not the worst problem in the world for an author to have writer's block, having two successful books under his belt already at more than ten million copies sold, but it is a very interesting if somewhat tragic problem and I'm really rooting for him to finish strong.

    You guys. The interviewer asked him if the third book would be longer than the second, and he said, "Probably not." PROBABLY. Now alarms are going off in my head because that is a very uncertain, hedge answer. As a writer, I know when I begin writing a book about how long it will be. Patrick has said the 3rd book is already written and just needs to be perfected. If that is the case, why doesn't he know how long it is going to be? Adding this with the fact that his publisher has never seen so much as one sentence of his new book, I believe that it is safe to say that he either scrapped the entire thing, or he NEVER WROTE IT AT ALL. WHY DON'T YOU KNOW HOW LONG YOUR BOOK IS, PAT?

I bet there are thousands of people in hospice or kids who've asked for a copy of the book for their Make-A-Wish who are dead now. Plus, it has to be an issue in every personal and professional relationship as I know that when I saw he would be speaking at a local convention (pre-pandemic), I chose not to go because I figured there would be some kind of an announcement asking us to not ask him why it is taking so long or asking him when he'd be done. . . but those are the two questions EVERYONE has, so now we're all assholes for asking when he's taken 10 years and counting?
