Yeah older rockers dont have the lungs & energy they had 30+ years earlier. Respect that they rock into old age, but… Listen to the original studio recording
FYI - The song is about the famous "Chicken Ranch". The Chicken Ranch was an illegal brothel in the great state of Texas that operated from 1905 until 1973 in Fayette County, about 2.5 miles (4.0 km) east of downtown La Grange. The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas is a movie (a musical) about the Chicken Ranch that starred Dolly Parton and Burt Reynolds. I went there with two older buddies in 1969. They were old enough to gain entry...I had to wait in the parking lot. It was a very long ride home for me, a 16 year old virgin at the time. As it turned out, that was as close as I ever got to a whorehouse...the parking lot! LOL Be well, Duke
My mother's family had a farm about a mile from the Chicken ranch. When I did the genealogy on my family, I wondered why my grandmother's brothers didn't get married until their thirties, then I found how close the farm was to the ranch-that solved that mystery.
Fun Fact: Jimi Hendrix, back in the '60s, went on record to say that Billy Gibbons was the best up-an-coming guitarist of the time. Also, RIP to bassist Dusty Hill, he was integral to ZZ Top's sound and his too infrequent vocals had real impact. Their early albums laid the groundwork for their 50 year run and "La Grange" was one of their first big hits. One of many.
Spot On man, they made me a fan the first time I saw them, in 1973 on the Tres Hombres tour, they killed it and opened for Uhriah Heep! What a concert!!!
The band with the longest time with the original members - These three played together since 1969. This was recorded a few months before Rusty Hill( Bass player) passed.
These guys have talked about what a blessed life they have lead to be able to make music with guys they love for as long as they had. @@duke2651 but Dusty hand-picked Elwood to replace him before his death. Elwood was Dusty's guitar tech for a very long time. Dusty didn't want the band to stop playing at his death so asked Elwood to play in his place. Even by Elwood's own admission, he says he can never take Dusty's place and doesn't consider himself part of the band.

They recorded their first album in my former hometown where I grew up (Tyler Texas) in 1969 at Robin Hood Bryan studios if I remember right (from the album jacket). I was backstage with them, Gary Moore, and Heart way back in the day (1980 or so)...around the first or second time I saw Stevie Ray Vaughn. Lucky enough to see them many times in concert.
Saw them 5 times. First time 1975. Frothworth. The 76 world tour. They had a big white bull and a long horn steer and a buzzard and a lizard on stage while they were playing. Fandango half the album is live. Stay well and groovy my friend. Texas
I must admit I first encountered ZZ Top during their later 'MTV Years'. But not long after that I got a temporary job at the local library while waiting for other things. And they had all the early ZZ Top albums in their to-loan-out CD collection. I really learned to love all those albums I'd never heard before as I did my morning routine (I got there two hours before opening time, and we still had paper cards to sort in the mid-80's)! Hmm, another artist I used to roll my eyes about before that was Bob Dylan after the 60's. Have a reaction to 'Black Diamond Bay'! I never saw that one hitting me between the eyes!
ZZ Top have such a groove it's unbelievable. If you like harder stuff, Just Got Paid or Cheap Sunglasses. If you like the blues, Sure Got Cold After The Rain Fell and Fool For Your Stockings are bangers.
That song was from their 1973 "Tres Hombres" album. Billy Gibbons, Guitar, is now 75 years old. I was 10 years old when it came out and it blew me away. Check out their songs "Waitin for the bus/Jesus just left Chicago", two songs in one basically. I saw the three times in 1979 and 1980.

I've seen ZZ Top 4 times over the years. The first time in the mid 70s, and the last time a few years ago with my 35 year old son. Dusty Hill had passed, and Elwood Francis was on bass. Dusty is missed so much, but Elwood did a great job. Their concerts are always fun and a dance party! RIP Dusty Hill.

Fun fact. The drummers name is "Frank Beard", and he's the only member in the band who doesn't have one. 😄

He was also the only member with a heroin addiction from early on.

Billy Gibbons turned 75 yesterday and he's still rocking out!
RIP Dusty Hill amd thank you for all the years and the hundreds of fantastic memories.
No one who likes a good groove has ever been disappointed by ZZ Top!
Good groove and rough guitar sounds. Go and check Peer Günt - backseat or Francine - goodbye forever. I am sure that you will love those. 😀
Agree with the groove - Dusty and Frank just drive the track forward and Billy flies above it. They do just seem to love jamming and grooving.
