Since the dawn of RUclips and internet video storage in general, i look for that footage. Every now and then i spent HOURS looking for this single lap. And said lap was nowhere to be found. But i did not lose my hope (yet). I want to believe someone out there filmed it and have it gathering dust in some basement. Then someday it will be found and brought to us.

Many years ago there was a youtube video with a Monaco lap with Senna getting the pole from Prost. I dont remember the year but I think it was on 1988, and the time gap was more than 1 second. In the end of the video the cameras showed Ron Dennis laughing in disbelief, and a very pissed Prost. I've tried to find that video again, but never was able to...
Senna was from a time in which, at 22 years of age, "you still had time" to get to F1. Nowadays, you're supposed to already be karting in your father's balls to even smell the fuel coming out of a GP3 car.
That’s true. What is also true is that Prost outscored him and had at one stage 6 poles in a row which Senna never achieved. Truly a spectaculair driver, unbeatable on his day but a lot of times it wasn’t his day.
I love that Micheal Schumacher, a 7-time world champion himself even said aryton was #1. I remember in Italy when shumi was asked how it feels winning as much as senna. He started crying, true racing legend.

Then Imola 1994 Erik Comas rushed to help Ayrton Senna but by that point Senna was too hurt and passed away. Comas retired at the end of the season due to Senna dying.

Schumacher was a political master at setting expectations. In his prime, Schumacher and the team always talked modestly about their chances. Inside, Schumacher probably felt he had a good chance at beating anybody, anywhere, any conditions. He is in the top echelon of drivers with Senna whether people like that or not.

I am old enough to admit that I watched Clark, Hill, Stewart, Hunt, Villeneuve, Piquet, Prost, etc. But Ayrton was on another level. Politics of F1 screwed him as far back as the wet race in Monaco driving the Toleman -he was destined to win over Prost when they called the race. I watched his death live that fateful day, turned off my TV, and didn't watch another F1 race until about 4-5 years ago. F1 lost all meaning to me in the interim...
The race on 1.5.1994 was the last F1 race I watched. After the crash I was checking the news to find out if he'll be OK, because of the head movement and the comments at the race. I remember till today like it was yesterday how I could not believe it, when few hours later they said he's dead. I did watch some small parts of races, but it just isn't the same so I never watched even a half race after that ... I haven't watched for 20 years now at all ...
I remember the day where Schuhmacher got the same amount of wins in Italy like Senna. In the Interview after the Race he bursts out in tears after a reporter asked him what it means to him winning as much as senna.

I was born in 83 so got to watch the greatness first hand growing up and it was a real real treat,i will never forget senna's battles with mansell,but what makes this era even more incredible is that there was very little in the way of safety as every year at least 1 driver died,was the golden era of the sport
It was truly an amazing time in F1.....Electric!! I remember watching (and recording) the race when he died. They flew him away in a helicopter and we all had high hopes he would be ok. When they announced his passing (near the end of the race) I fell to pieces. Then I had to break the news to my [Italian] brother-in-law when he got home from work. We spent the rest of the evening drinking in a strange, somber state.....RIP Hero!

Same thing for me. It's hard to know exactly how exciting it was when Senna finally won in Brazil in 1991. Good video editing by big-budget studios could only do so much to capture the moment. The closest thing that could draw in that much excitement today is if Kubica finally got a real race seat and took 1st place in a GP. Even then, the excitement of that would not surpass any of Senna's highlights at all. Same with the Hamilton-Rosberg rivalry. Couldn't surpass Prost-Senna, though the 2014 Bahrain race was crazy.
That lap at Monaco 1988 proves how much Senna was on a different level. He outqualified Prost by 1.4 seconds, who in turn, had outqualified the 3rd placed driver (Berger) by 1.2 seconds. Senna was 2.6 seconds over Berger. That is blinding speed. No one can ever match that.
on that same weekend's race day, he was some 55 seconds ahead of Prost who was 2nd. Senna crashed at the barrier at Portier because he was told to slow down, which broke his concentration.

True about Ayrton, totally ignorant about Villeneuve. The guy died because after having run already his hot lap on fresh tires 9they lasted one fast lap back then) and having failed to beat his teammate, he went for another lap despite the fact it was pretty much an impossibility to beat his own time. And in the middle of the woods he run into a much less talented driver who hesitated and closed the door in his face, killing him. That was Gilles Villeneue, giving 200% even when it was impossible to change the outcome. Or when you didn't have a front wing after he obstructed his view for many laps (he followed the trails left from the cars before because he couldn't see in front of his car) or only had three wheels. Gilles was spectacular always, too often with seriously inferior equipment. He laso only taced 67 GPs, very brief career, he did not have a decade of F1 like Senna, Prost, SChumacher, or Hamilton. 4 1/2 seasons, 1 with a very good car, one with an OK car as a rookie, the rest some of the worst F1s in history (the T5 in 1980 saw Scheckter qualify last and the 126C in 1981 was described by its designer as a shitbox, it was just to have a host for the new turbo engine. When finally he got a car that became exceptional as the season progressed, he had died in Zolder)

Same watched whole career Schumacher with time at bennaton mastered that electronic assist style. Senna drove as loose as possible because loose is fast and he was so go he knew he could compensate. I watch career I sadly watched that day. His Monaco in cars really give average viewer some insight into prodigious talent. Growing up in Brasil/Brazil depending on Portuguese idolized Ayrton. He was in tropical climate lots of rain but drivable rain warm. That's where he became. Magical✨ senna driving was art. He ran, meditated, healthy, passionate, he did live women and from Brasil can't blame him!!! Hard to feel bad for Schumacher other than horrible sli injury but he became huge star with newer generation. Senna fans had hard time accepting like listening to miles David kind of blue of vinyl, and little sibling says listen to and its weather report. Don't get me wrong I love this tribute, but I feel it isn't entirely correct. This tribute makes Senna seem like he took out Prost just to win the championship, but it doesn't explain the background. Senna didn't let up because he qualified first then the first position was moved to the opposite of the grid which was not on the racing line therefore less grip. He tried to protest that, but to no avail, he felt that the French FIA president at the time Jean Marie Ballestre favored Alain Prost.
He was saying that since 88,now the frog Ballestre always protect Prost. Was the third time it happen ,he got the pole position and once again he said. Having won the pole for the third time will say once again, whoever got second has a better position . Ballestre denied and he left the meeting , it happen just the way M Brundle say , whenever seeing a gap he would dive in . Prost did the same the year before, knowing Senna would go for it gave him a small gap to crash. Doins so won the title. Payback and Prost being stupid , gave him the same gap and dare him to do it again . Well he went knowing if he block me we will crash and is done.
The head of Formula One, Max Mosley, at the time, was at Roland Ratzenberger's funeral and when asked why he went, he said that someone had to go and remember him cause everyone else was at Senna's and people had forgotten him... It was very sad but very true as Senna's death and overshadowed everything. I think 4 other drivers did attend Ratzenberger's funeral they were his teammates and german compatriots.
Senna and Ratzenberger were friends, I believe. When they were investigating Senna's death, they found an Austrian flag in the car; it appears that Senna was planning on raising it after the race as a tribute to Ratzenberger; sadly, he never got the chance to do that.
I'm still angry on people that forget Raztenberger's death. When he died for example 1999,2005 or whatever, everybody be writing rip Roland. It's disgusting how overlook is Roland' death. At least they did memorial for both drivers in spain 2019 i think. Rip both drivers.
Come on, this is a tribute to arguably the greatest F1 driver ever. Roland was completely unproven and basically unknown to the general public. All fans and drivers respected Roland and (myself included) were shocked by his death.
Senna was the greatest race car driver of all time, I was lucky enough to meet him when I was around 16yo, wearing a Camel Cigarettes hat given to me by a friend. At that time Ayrton was sponsored by Marlborough but he had the grace to sign my hat behind the Adelaide GP pits... I wished him luck, shook his hand and he went on to win that GP. A true gentleman and wonderful human being.... forever missed by the motor racing world.

Senna is such a legend on so many levels. Most casual fans forget he was also Chair of the F1 Driver's Safety Committee the year he passed. He argued points of contention that became standards of safety which have potentially saved dozens of lives over the past 3 decades. *LEGEND*

@Crixus Mauperthuis Numbers mean a lot in the creation of universe, yes, numbers tell us how many more chromosomes you must have from a normal human being. BUT when it comes to racing, specially in F1 where all teams have different cars, you have to analyse which team have/had a better car at the time, WHAT team the specific driver was racing for, WHAT was his consistency on each team and weather conditions. I'll give you an example: Ayrton Senna, 1984 monaco GP, Toleman Team, not even near to be the best car on the grid, no driver would be able to win a race with that car when you've got rivals that are driving Ferraris, Lotus, Mclarens... Even so he was able to finish 2nd place which could be a very 1st place IF the race wasn't stopped. You could see there that this wasn't any common driver. Another example of Ayrton Senna's Brilliance, Estoril 1985, Lotus team, a beautiful car and a Fast car, not as fast as the Mclaren, Williams and Ferrari at the time but yes, he could win a championship with that car, BUT he was still a Rookie and was racing against Alain Prost, Nelson Piquet, Niki Lauda, Nigel Mansell. Back to the race, yes, you should know that it rained that day, Ayrton Senna won that race lapping everyone but one, there you could confirm that his skills on the rain was above every other driver. That is ONE of the reasons that SO MANY people/drivers consider him one of the best ever, if not THE best ever, Schumacher Himself said it, Hamilton, Hakkinen, Alonso. Watching Senna make his car dance on the ragged edge, even in a straight line absolutely fighting for traction gives me goosebumps. Simply amazing. F1 seems so sterile now.
@@deszczowa7661 Other drivers would go way slower. That's why Senna would would be sometimes 1.5 seconds faster per lap and many times finished races over a minute ahead of the driver in the second position.

Whilst I loved Senna, my son and grandson are named after him, for me, the greatest was Jim Clark. Different era's I know but he would race F1, F2 and touring cars on the same day, and win in all....

Senna was another kind of legend, the one that inspire the others, the one that let’s you see what one can do. F1 has a lot of legends and no one can say for sure which is the best. Senna was a lunatic believing in God and his special protection. He was only correct when he won. Compared to Fangio, Clark and Moss he was an unbearable egomaniac, Prost was right about him.
Comas was driving the car which was released on to the track by mistake after Senna's fatal accident and just stopped before colliding with the medical helicopter at the scene. Erik was very emotional when he talked about this later. He said Ayrton saved my life, I wish I could have saved his life that day at that crash scene.
I was born in '99. 5 Years after his death. First memory I have from F1 are the battles between Häkkinen and Schumacher, I loved both of them. When Bruno Senna came to F1 my mom told me that back in the day there was another Senna in F1, and told me that he was an amazing driver. When I asked her where he is, she got sad and told me that he had a fatal crash in '94 at Imola. I went to youtube to watch Senna tributes and videos, I was a fan at first sight. To this day I am still very sad that I wasn't born soon enough to see him race. In my opinion Senna was the greatest driver of all time.

Yeah, I can't stop watching Senna's onboard lap in Monaco, even though the lap time is slower than today's cars. The only other driver who has style in their drive, in my opinion, was Kubica. Hard to know if he still has it since (1 his right arm is injured and (2 today's cars are easier to drive. Just look at Hamilton in this video.
Lost count how many times ive watched this vídeo. I was born in Brazil in the 80s. I remember Sundays watching F1. The music that would play on tv when a Brazilian driver would win (respect to Piquet also). Football nation would stop for Senna. Now living in the UK, I can recognise even more how many people he touched across the globe. Cried my eyes out when he died. Still makes me cry today. Thank you Airton.

I was never particularly a Senna fan either, but then I saw the documentary Clarkson mentions at the end of this clip and there's an uninterrupted on-board lap of Monaco in it and I just couldn't believe what I was seeing. Incidentally that documentary's one of the best things I've ever watched.
Its an amazing documentary he was a talented driver whenever it rained you always knew Senna was gonna win he was the best at wet laps! He said he once lost because it rained so he started practising in the rain until he was brilliant at it
Still impressive film, I got seriously injured in a traffic accident when on my way to tell friends that Roland Ratzenberger had died in Imola. Next day Ayrton died and I was still out after long and harsh surgery trying to save my legs from amputating. I got back consious the day after the funeral and was uterly devastated to find out that Ayrton had died. He was, no still is, my absolute number one for ever. Every car I owned has a Senna double S on it to remember him, and his helmet is in our living room, always in sight.
I'm watching this on the 30th anniversary of his death and I'm saddened by two things. I didn't get to experience and watch Senna on Sundays and that his life came to such a tragic ending. RIP Ayrton Senna, my son will be named after you.

Lewis never brags about any of his huge achivements, instead he praises all the drivers who came before him. He is a clean, respectful young man. My opinion : the best of them all. I'm a brazilian national by the way.

Hamilton is a milenial, he's Lucky to have been spared(most) of the racism, etc. In the time of Senna, Hamilton would have never driven an F1 car, lest for a german brand like MB.

Top Gear, Ayrton Senna, and Radiohead. I swear this segment was made for me. When I first watched it years ago, it got me interested in F1, and Senna became my favorite driver in any sport.
this is probably the best tribute one could made. acknowledging his masterfull aggression as a driver, his wits on the track, his skill in the rain, his dedication outside of races, his goodness as a human being, and even the sheer insanity of the car he drove. if anyone deserved this, senna does.

The amazing thing is that Senna had the guts to say it knowing he was wrong, which he would admit to later. The beautiful paradox of Senna. He was in conflict about so much, but not about winning and not about staying absolutely true to what he believed was right.
My great aunts grandson has been a mechanic for the McLaren f1 for over 25 years and still is, and one of his first memories was when he was working on the car, he was sorting the right front tyre. Senna walked up to the car, lightly licked the tyre and went “that needs another 0.5lbs”, and just smiled and walked off. My relative just looked in shock as to like how the hell can he just have that knowledge, he really was something else
Met him a few times....first time he had to walk through a throng of media & us kids (at the back) waiting for autographs. He stopped for us & patiently gave us all his autograph. Second time he was carrying stacks of Tamiya models of his honda lotus camel. I walked up to him, he stopped & gave me his autograph again. The next day in the newspaper it reported that he had gone to meet up with the Brazilian community & had presented gifts to the kids there. He was a man of the people for the people.

I'd highly doubt any driver except maybe Alonso could keep it on the track in those cars. Even Alonso wouldn't be able to match the lap times 90's drivers created in those cars.
Did you guys know that in the Donnington Senna's wet race tha was mentioned in this video, Ayrton stoped to change tires 6 times? In 5 times he changes his wet tires but then... they run out of wet tires and Ayrton change for slick's and continued the race, in wet condition, doing lots and lots better than anyone in the track! How the heck he pulled this off!!!??? He won the race waaaay ahead of everyone else. He put a lap in all the racers bu the second place, wich came more than a minute and half after him! Never ever watched Formula 1 since that tragic day. Actually watched it happen with my dad, way back on the 1st of May, 1994. We just sat there in silence. They'll never be another driver with the raw and visceral talent that Aryton Senna possessed. RIP sir
I just watched Senna, the documentary Jeremy mentioned, and I cried. I cried hard. I know F1, I knew what had happened. They showed his entire final lap and I couldnt stop crying through the whole thing. It felt like they made him your friend throughout the film, doing everything to make you forget the end so you can feel the emotion all over again.

Actually Gilles was spectacular always, for those of us who were lucky enough to watch him race. he rarely had a front car, that's why irrelevant commentators don't know this. I think Ayrton was a more complete driver, but Gilles was the only to come close to Ayrton and with infinetely inferior cars. In 1979, Lauda described being behind Gilles in Monaco for several laps and how lap after lap after lap, Gilles kept running his rear tires against the guardrail in several point, enough to mark them but never too hard to damage the car. If Niki Lauda openly stated he had never seen anything like that and that Gilles was the most talented driver of them all, you can believe him over wannabe Clarkson anytime
I thought it was very telling that Ayrtons family gave Lewis his helmet almost to say "youre his natural successor" Lewis was lost for words from what's been reported as we all know Ayrton was his hero.. Obsessed with Ayrton ever since I started watching F1. Even though I never saw him race in person, he will always be my all time favorite driver. And I don't think I'm the only one who thinks like this. Absolute monster, there won't be anyone like him ever again.

Masterful writing in this Top Gear segment. This is what this show was so good at! I've watched this countless times, and every time, it hits so hard. Jeremy Clarkson and the rest of the crew did a great job telling this story of this, the greatest Formula 1 race car driver of all time!
Jezza has done some very interesting documentaries in his life, so he does have a lot of experience in this field. It showed whenever they did a segment about something historical, as that is firmly Jezza's forte.
I realise how good he was when I went to see the European Grand Prix in Donington Park, it was pouring down rain and I had to buy a Marlboro white and red umbrella we where all soaking wet, Senna was driving so fast in the wet he actually start overtaking the last ones from the beginning of the second lap.amazing !!!!

Since the dawn of RUclips and internet video storage in general, i look for that footage. Every now and then i spent HOURS looking for this single lap. And said lap was nowhere to be found.
But i did not lose my hope (yet). I want to believe someone out there filmed it and have it gathering dust in some basement. Then someday it will be found and brought to us.

In 1989 the normally aspirated engines arrived and many thought that Senna would lose some of his amazing speed without turbos. But Ayrton remained supremely fast in all conditions. While going around corners he still refused to take his foot off the gas pedal, a technique he learned as a kid during his karting years.
Ayrton Senna actually believed he had the God-given right to win. His trust in divine intervention helped him to go faster than he normally could have. Being guided by a higher power enhanced his performance beyond what it would have been without religion. His faith made all the difference. Ayrton had an unshakable belief that he was fulfilling God's will.
He prepared himself better than any other driver before, both physically and mentally. He was an innovator in using sport psychology, physical, and mental trainer Nuno Cobra before anyone else in Formula 1. He used techniques to control his breathing and relax when he was becoming over-aroused. These methods allowed him to concentrate at almost superhuman level and get into the zone almost at will during races.
Gerhard Berger: Once he was focused he didn't feel any pain or stress. Nothing. Damon Hill: He talked about a state of mind he got into whereby he was there, but not really driving the car. Prost describes how, after a race at Monaco, Ayrton explains how he monitored his performance during the race itself: He managed to visualize from a 'third person' perspective (i.e. as if watching from outside) during the race and corrected his mistakes.
Ayrton Senna had the qualities to be the best racing driver of his time, and that is exactly what he was. His tombstone simply reads: 'Nothing can separate me from the love of God'

Schumacher was a political master at setting expectations. In his prime, Schumacher and the team always talked modestly about their chances. Inside, Schumacher probably felt he had a good chance at beating anybody, anywhere, any conditions. He is in the top echelon of drivers with Senna whether people like that or not.

I am old enough to admit that I watched Clark, Hill, Stewart, Hunt, Villeneuve, Piquet, Prost, etc. But Ayrton was on another level. Politics of F1 screwed him as far back as the wet race in Monaco driving the Toleman -he was destined to win over Prost when they called the race.
I watched his death live that fateful day, turned off my TV, and didn't watch another F1 race until about 4-5 years ago. F1 lost all meaning to me in the interim...

The race on 1.5.1994 was the last F1 race I watched. After the crash I was checking the news to find out if he'll be OK, because of the head movement and the comments at the race. I remember till today like it was yesterday how I could not believe it, when few hours later they said he's dead. I did watch some small parts of races, but it just isn't the same so I never watched even a half race after that ... I haven't watched for 20 years now at all ...

During the late 80’s to early 90’s, I had a relative take me to Monaco, Toronto, Japan, Spa-Francorchamps,
And Hockenheim. My uncle was a Engineer at Ohlins and got track passes. I fell in Love with Honda back then. That time period was the best
I was born in 83 so got to watch the greatness first hand growing up and it was a real real treat,i will never forget senna's battles with mansell,but what makes this era even more incredible is that there was very little in the way of safety as every year at least 1 driver died,was the golden era of the sport

It was truly an amazing time in F1.....Electric!! I remember watching (and recording) the race when he died. They flew him away in a helicopter and we all had high hopes he would be ok. When they announced his passing (near the end of the race) I fell to pieces. Then I had to break the news to my [Italian] brother-in-law when he got home from work. We spent the rest of the evening drinking in a strange, somber state.....RIP Hero!

Me too. I watched when Schumacher was dominating but I didn't watch F1 that early in my life. I'm american so it was only by chance that I got interested in F1 when Michael was dominating.
Same thing for me. It's hard to know exactly how exciting it was when Senna finally won in Brazil in 1991. Good video editing by big-budget studios could only do so much to capture the moment. The closest thing that could draw in that much excitement today is if Kubica finally got a real race seat and took 1st place in a GP. Even then, the excitement of that would not surpass any of Senna's highlights at all. Same with the Hamilton-Rosberg rivalry. Couldn't surpass Prost-Senna, though the 2014 Bahrain race was crazy.

That lap at Monaco 1988 proves how much Senna was on a different level. He outqualified Prost by 1.4 seconds, who in turn, had outqualified the 3rd placed driver (Berger) by 1.2 seconds.
Senna was 2.6 seconds over Berger. That is blinding speed. No one can ever match that.
on that same weekend's race day, he was some 55 seconds ahead of Prost who was 2nd. Senna crashed at the barrier at Portier because he was told to slow down, which broke his concentration.

True about Ayrton, totally ignorant about Villeneuve. The guy died because after having run already his hot lap on fresh tires 9they lasted one fast lap back then) and having failed to beat his teammate, he went for another lap despite the fact it was pretty much an impossibility to beat his own time. And in the middle of the woods he run into a much less talented driver who hesitated and closed the door in his face, killing him. That was Gilles Villeneue, giving 200% even when it was impossible to change the outcome. Or when you didn't have a front wing after he obstructed his view for many laps (he followed the trails left from the cars before because he couldn't see in front of his car) or only had three wheels. Gilles was spectacular always, too often with seriously inferior equipment. Don't get me wrong I love this tribute, but I feel it isn't entirely correct. This tribute makes Senna seem like he took out Prost just to win the championship, but it doesn't explain the background. Senna didn't let up because he qualified first then the first position was moved to the opposite of the grid which was not on the racing line therefore less grip. He tried to protest that, but to no avail, he felt that the French FIA president at the time Jean Marie Ballestre favored Alain Prost.

Having won the pole for the third time will say once again, whoever got second has a better position . Prost did the same the year before, knowing Senna would go for it gave him a small gap to crash. Doins so won the title. The head of Formula One, Max Mosley, at the time, was at Roland Ratzenberger's funeral and when asked why he went, he said that someone had to go and remember him cause everyone else was at Senna's and people had forgotten him... It was very sad but very true as Senna's death and overshadowed everything. I think 4 other drivers did attend Ratzenberger's funeral they were his teammates and german compatriots.

Senna and Ratzenberger were friends, I believe. When they were investigating Senna's death, they found an Austrian flag in the car; it appears that Senna was planning on raising it after the race as a tribute to Ratzenberger; sadly, he never got the chance to do that.

Come on, this is a tribute to arguably the greatest F1 driver ever. Roland was completely unproven and basically unknown to the general public. All fans and drivers respected Roland and (myself included) were shocked by his death.
Senna was the greatest race car driver of all time, I was lucky enough to meet him when I was around 16yo, wearing a Camel Cigarettes hat given to me by a friend. At that time Ayrton was sponsored by Marlborough but he had the grace to sign my hat behind the Adelaide GP pits... I wished him luck, shook his hand and he went on to win that GP. A true gentleman and wonderful human being.... forever missed by the motor racing world.

@@onizinn Indeed, he was dominant in Karting etc as well. He also helped Honda develop and tune the legendary NSX, which was designed to compete with supercars at a fraction of the price tag. Senna is such a legend on so many levels. Most casual fans forget he was also Chair of the F1 Driver's Safety Committee the year he passed. He argued points of contention that became standards of safety which have potentially saved dozens of lives over the past 3 decades.

BUT when it comes to racing, specially in F1 where all teams have different cars, you have to analyse which team have/had a better car at the time, WHAT team the specific driver was racing for, WHAT was his consistency on each team and weather conditions. I'll give you an example:
Ayrton Senna, 1984 monaco GP, Toleman Team, not even near to be the best car on the grid, no driver would be able to win a race with that car when you've got rivals that are driving Ferraris, Lotus, Mclarens... Even so he was able to finish 2nd place which could be a very 1st place IF the race wasn't stopped. You could see there that this wasn't any common driver.
Another example of Ayrton Senna's Brilliance, Estoril 1985, Lotus team, a beautiful car and a Fast car, not as fast as the Mclaren, Williams and Ferrari at the time but yes, he could win a championship with that car, BUT he was still a Rookie and was racing against Alain Prost, Nelson Piquet, Niki Lauda, Nigel Mansell. Back to the race, yes, you should know that it rained that day, Ayrton Senna won that race lapping everyone but one, there you could confirm that his skills on the rain was above every other driver. That is ONE of the reasons that SO MANY people/drivers consider him one of the best ever, if not THE best ever, Schumacher Himself said it, Hamilton, Hakkinen, Alonso. Drivers that seems to understand much more about racing than me, you and 99% of this planet.

Comas was driving the car which was released on to the track by mistake after Senna's fatal accident and just stopped before colliding with the medical helicopter at the scene. Erik was very emotional when he talked about this later. He said Ayrton saved my life, I wish I could have saved his life that day at that crash scene.
I was born in '99. 5 Years after his death. First memory I have from F1 are the battles between Häkkinen and Schumacher, I loved both of them. When Bruno Senna came to F1 my mom told me that back in the day there was another Senna in F1, and told me that he was an amazing driver. When I asked her where he is, she got sad and told me that he had a fatal crash in '94 at Imola. I went to youtube to watch Senna tributes and videos, I was a fan at first sight. To this day I am still very sad that I wasn't born soon enough to see him race. In my opinion Senna was the greatest driver of all time.

Yeah, I can't stop watching Senna's onboard lap in Monaco, even though the lap time is slower than today's cars. The only other driver who has style in their drive, in my opinion, was Kubica. Hard to know if he still has it since (1 his right arm is injured and (2 today's cars are easier to drive. Just look at Hamilton in this video.

The music that would play on tv when a Brazilian driver would win (respect to Piquet also). Football nation would stop for Senna. I was never particularly a Senna fan either, but then I saw the documentary Clarkson mentions at the end of this clip and there's an uninterrupted on-board lap of Monaco in it and I just couldn't believe what I was seeing.

Still impressive film, I got seriously injured in a traffic accident when on my way to tell friends that Roland Ratzenberger had died in Imola. Next day Ayrton died and I was still out after long and harsh surgery trying to save my legs from amputating. I got back consious the day after the funeral and was uterly devastated to find out that Ayrton had died. He was, no still is, my absolute number one for ever. Every car I owned has a Senna double S on it to remember him, and his helmet is in our living room, always in sight.

My great aunts grandson has been a mechanic for the McLaren f1 for over 25 years and still is, and one of his first memories was when he was working on the car, he was sorting the right front tyre. Senna walked up to the car, lightly licked the tyre and went “that needs another 0.5lbs”, and just smiled and walked off. My relative just looked in shock as to like how the hell can he just have that knowledge, he really was something else

Met him a few times....first time he had to walk through a throng of media & us kids (at the back) waiting for autographs. He stopped for us & patiently gave us all his autograph. Second time he was carrying stacks of Tamiya models of his honda lotus camel. I walked up to him, he stopped & gave me his autograph again. The next day in the newspaper it reported that he had gone to meet up with the Brazilian community & had presented gifts to the kids there. He was a man of the people for the people.

@@legitbot2432 Nowadays nobody is a master in the wet. Compare a 1990 car to a 2021 car. The computers, tech is significantly different and helpful. I'd highly doubt any driver except maybe Alonso could keep it on the track in those cars. Even Alonso wouldn't be able to match the lap times 90's drivers created in those cars.

Did you guys know that in the Donnington Senna's wet race tha was mentioned in this video, Ayrton stoped to change tires 6 times? In 5 times he changes his wet tires but then... they run out of wet tires and Ayrton change for slick's and continued the race, in wet condition, doing lots and lots better than anyone in the track!

He won the race waaaay ahead of everyone else. He put a lap in all the racers bu the second place, wich came more than a minute and half after him!

I just watched Senna, the documentary Jeremy mentioned, and I cried. I cried hard. I know F1, I knew what had happened. They showed his entire final lap and I couldnt stop crying through the whole thing. It felt like they made him your friend throughout the film, doing everything to make you forget the end so you can feel the emotion all over again.
Same here, youl cry when you watch it for the 2nd time too..
The docu-film at the end makes you burst into tears. The music, the scene, the emotion.

Actually Gilles was spectacular always, for those of us who were lucky enough to watch him race. he rarely had a front car, that's why irrelevant commentators don't know this. I think Ayrton was a more complete driver, but Gilles was the only to come close to Ayrton and with infinetely inferior cars. In 1979, Lauda described being behind Gilles in Monaco for several laps and how lap after lap after lap, Gilles kept running his rear tires against the guardrail in several point, enough to mark them but never too hard to damage the car. If Niki Lauda openly stated he had never seen anything like that and that Gilles was the most talented driver of them all, you can believe him over wannabe Clarkson anytime
Old Prosty was the master though. He was a more likely world champion as he used his head better.

I thought it was very telling that Ayrtons family gave Lewis his helmet almost to say "youre his natural successor" Lewis was lost for words from what's been reported as we all know Ayrton was his hero.. Definitely the best without doubt, no hesitation or arguments from anyone, not even Schumacker, just immediate response to the question "who was the best ever"... SENNA..

I was watching Formula One that day when Senna died so long ago. Now I'm watching in 2019, literally on the brink of tears. Such a tragic loss.
Had to stop watching after Ayrton died it seemed utterly pointless to watch it without him, utter legend and hero.

Not even the football team managed to mobilize so many people, it is a symbol of our national identity and their institute continues to take care of poor children.

@@azynkron Yes, new generation learn about him and they Love him. Of course is almost impossible not love Senna he is a legend a true hero. His Sister Viviane Senna creates Instituto Ayrton Senna, it provides educacional assistance to kids, and take care of memory of Ayrton Senna, she is an incredible woman too, two years after Senna died, she lost her husband in a motorbike crash, she transform all this tragedy in good things and spread compassion and love.

Masterful writing in this Top Gear segment. This is what this show was so good at! I've watched this countless times, and every time, it hits so hard. Jeremy Clarkson and the rest of the crew did a great job telling this story of this, the greatest Formula 1 race car driver of all time!
Jezza has done some very interesting documentaries in his life, so he does have a lot of experience in this field. It showed whenever they did a segment about something historical, as that is firmly Jezza's forte.
I realise how good he was when I went to see the European Grand Prix in Donington Park, it was pouring down rain and I had to buy a Marlboro white and red umbrella we where all soaking wet, Senna was driving so fast in the wet he actually start overtaking the last ones from the beginning of the second lap.amazing !!!!
