Sounds like, he's in a dark place, but he hates dragging his mother down with him who's constantly trying to help him. He wants her to be happy. It's also common for people with depression to push people away and seek isolation.
The video is misleading. The song is about his exwife whos voice you hear at end of the video. Justin told me this himself. A tortured soul like so many of us, but a great guy!
John Mobley Yes it’s about her, the video alone is misleading. He’s not going to tell his mom that his memories make a porno feel like home. I don’t know Justin’s mom but some men let or expect their mothers to be their crutch and therapist all their life, and she can be too involved in his relationships, the man who tells his mom about his problems and avoids the partner. Avoids conflict, it’s an addiction to dependence on people to save you and not yourself. Anyway yep it’s his ex think her name is Mamie?
Richard Nelson Maybe family but not your ex. He’s seen talking to his mom not his ex, so it’s his apology to his ex, he told his but not the ex. Those who expect parents or family to bail them out of conflict in life. People don’t fix or heal us that’s an inside job.
The music video for "Hate Me," directed by Kevin Kerslake, begins with Furstenfeld sitting on his bed holding an answering machine and playing the tape of his mother which can be heard at the beginning of the song. After the message stops playing, Furstenfeld begins to walk through the house, seeing memories of him and his mother - her talking to him as a young boy, taking Prom pictures, and finally attempting to wake him from a blackout - replay in different rooms. These scenes alternate with footage of Blue October singing the song in the house's attic. At the end of the video, Furstenfeld takes the answering machine to a cemetery and lays it on his mother's grave.[3] The video led many fans to believe that Jeremy and Justin's mother had died. Rokie is in fact alive, and she plays herself in the video. The fictional narrative about her dying was conceived by the music video director.
I’ve always interpreted the “make a Porno feel like home” part as if Justin was saying that his emotional distress has become so great that he has lost emotional connection to his memories, like most people feel towards pornography.
I follow this band. He actually wrote this song for a girl he was dating, he first wrote her a song called Calling You for her, and after they broke up, he wrote this song. He has such a great story in all his songs about his life. Fear is a great song, it's good to see him and the band in a much better place now.
That’s not right. This is about his mother. Which is why his mom is in the video. She put up with so much for him. And he wants her to hate him because he feels he deserves it.
@@zachabbott6899 Richard Glenn is actually correct. He wrote the song for an ex-girlfriend. I've been to Justin's Open Book Tour concerts where he talks about his songs and the meanings behind the lyrics. In the video, yes his mom is featured. That was the video director's idea to use his mother. But honestly the song can relate to anyone that has hurt someone and doesn't want them to hurt any longer.
It is about his relationship with his mother and all the destruction he caused. He included recordings of his mother in the into and outro, and not a "girlfriend", and he included his mother in the video and not a GF.
Blue October is absolutely my favorite band. I have a tattoo of theirs. The lead singer, Justin, refound his faith about 5 years ago and recent music has been much more upbeat. Home is a great song about that, as well as Fear. They've gotten me through so much.
@@jakeybran, Oh. Okay. I wouldn't go as far as believing that he is Christian, unless he actually said it, though. It doesn't matter to me. I was just wondering, because of your statement. A lot of people that I see claiming to be Christian are acting quite the opposite.
Of all the songs that could have helped the band break through, it was "Hate Me," his open letter to an ex-lover who bore the brunt of his battle with addiction. Furstenfeld said the song's success felt like vindication. "I'm really proud of the fact that that song was the one," Furstenfeld said.
When I was younger I used to listen to this song over and over again. I had thoughts of suicidal hate. I thought about how much my pain was hurting my mom and I didn’t want that for her. I understood the words hate me so you can finally see what’s good for you and they hit home for me. Until you’ve been in a point of pure and utter depression to the point of hating your reflection in the mirror you don’t have a true appreciation for those words.
Their most recent album made me so happy. It still sounds like him but you can definitely tell hes much happier now. My favorite is I hope you're happy. So catchy. You just want to sing along haha
He has come so far in his recovery and mental health. You can definitely see a progression in his music from late 90s to now . He and his band have really evolved and it brings so much hope and joy to his fans like me that there is a future for us and a purpose.
Pastor Andy, You shoukd absolutely listen to Black Orchid by Blue October, the singer Justin wrote it in high schook. It is dark and beautiful.💙 Also check out Chameleon Boy by the same band Share the vid if you check it out.
This song should be played for people who are going through severely abusive relationships, who've done unnecessary, unforgiving mistakes, and who've attempted suicide. It hits home really hard for me.
The song is about him reminiscing back on the times with he had with his mother, who has passed away, hence why in the end he places the voice mail recorder in the cemetary. And he hates himself for making her life about him but never showing the love and respect she deserved. Justin and the whole band are powerful people, man. They are alot more than this song.
he is pretty much saying to his mother hate me because of all that she has been through w/ him, and he wants her to hate him, so she won't mourn him...but of course she would no matter what, that is her child, but that was his way of thinking, that she needs to hate him, so it doesn't bother her when he's gone...very emotional song...I love Blue October!!
I have to agree with everyone 💯 about doing a reaction to his song FEAR the official video it's a very powerful and uplifting song it will give you chills 💙 Justin has been sober now going on almost 7 years and is all about positivity now. He just made a Documentary that took 7 years to make that will soon be released. It documents his life from when he was in a dark place till now sober, married, kids and healthy. This is the link to his Documentary hope you get to watch it. ruclips.net/video/AwjewecS90k/видео.html
he struggled with addiction and mental illness and his mother fought to help him. Justin is in a much better place now. You should check out their recent song "Home" which is juxtaposed to this one.
Replied to a comment about this, but so you can see this easier; listen to "The End" as well. VERY powerful. Its ab a murder suicide that happened in Justin's neighborhood
Yo guys, I know you guys are into the mainstream-ish rock stuff as of late but I really gotta recommend you check out Kneel To The Cross by Agalloch. It's got a vibe.
"Sober now for three whole months" pretty sure its addressing an addiction. Most likely alcohol since that is most commonly referred to as being sober or drunk. Just an opinion
Justin has battled so many demons growing up... He said this song is an apology. To all the people he put through hell while battling those demons...The album Any Man in America is hauntingly dark and shows his skeletons.
@@stevonic719 I saw want people to be rare and willingly to address darkness. As someone who still drinks on a regular basis it's a demon no one understands
The foiled album is about his addiction to heroin hence the ball of foil in the background. He is finally happy and singing happier tunes. My favorite album of theirs.

Need to react to Fear by Blue October. Really finishes the story on a good note.
The song was about his mother helping get away from drinking. He lost his mother and finally stopped drinking and wrote this song.
His mother is alive.
In the actual music video, the song is portrayed to be about his Mother and he is singing it to her after he is dead from an overdose.
The into is his mother leaving him a message.
