  • Bonus: Noam Chomsky on Crazy Town
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As a follow up to Episode 61 of the Crazy Town podcast (www.postcarbon.org/crazytown/..., Noam Chomsky, the well-known linguist, author, and social critic, joins Asher Miller for an interview in Crazy Town to discuss the failures and dominance of neoliberalism - which Chomsky describes as “class war” - since delivery of the Powell Memo 50 years ago.
Chomsky responds to George Monbiot’s critique of the political center and left for not, in Monbiot’s view, developing viable alternatives to neoliberalism. Disagreeing with Monbiot’s (and admittedly Post Carbon Institute’s own) views about the limits of Keynesian “green growth” economic policies, Chomsky discusses proposals developed by places like the Political Economy Research Institute (PERI) that he believes would meet the needs of the poor and working classes while tackling the climate crisis. Noam’s emphasis on community power, going back to his childhood experiences, strongly resonate with “Do the Opposite” themes explored in Season 4 of Crazy Town.

Community, solidarity, popular support and pressure. That's pretty much it, how it's done. No superman, tony stark, or avengers. Just Us. Prof. Chomsky is the truth.

All of that is true but it also takes people in power advocating your cause, a mountain of money and something to offer all those in political power that trumps the corporate conglomerates pulling power.
One battle at a time, it's hard to get everyone behind several social issues all at once. Usually one issue at a time which takes decades, for example Legalize/decriminalization of Cannabis or African American rights, or women's rights (most of which is still ongoing)
Currently immigrant rights, abortion/contraception rights, border disputes, government spending, government policy m, military policy, military spending, international policy, international spending, international aid. It goes on and on.
US healthcare potentially changing to what all other developed countries have (free healthcare, paternal leave, annual paid leave)
For example a friend of mine had a kid and was using contraception and was denied Vasectomy numerous times, their medical bills for following the law by having their kid in the hospital cost them $20,000
Imagine that, if they had their kid at home they could be charged with child endangerment.

This is great, the more we can get Noam Chomsky to talk about things like this in such great detail while he’s still alive and well, the better.

How polite and gentle Chomsky is, when faced with the interviewer's struggle to find the right questions, eh.

30:30 he’s saying people were hopeful in the 30’s. Well what he fails to mention is one important detail, there was enough resources to rebuild the society whereas now civ is so far along we’re extracting everything that’s been an easy job now extracting will only get more expensive or we’re about there. Well there’s good reason to not have their same optimism because we can’t do what they did with resources getting too expensive.
