Cats make working on cars more interesting. They must think we are either hunting or playing since we are doing things that seem to have no point.
Sooo true haha, I never thought of that before. She loves the Beat. She's always sitting on the top when it's sunny :)
Feckin "cliff hangers". 💪
Hahaha it'll be worth it, I promise!
Greetings from Belfast, great to see you back on this build, been loving watching you work on it. Best thing about the radio was the AVC automatic volume control, which turned the volume up as the revs went up, so you could hear the radio over the sound of the engine, and also so you didn't deafening yourself every time you stoped at lights. Miss my beat every day. But I have to say... I like it without the dash, and all the extra legroom in the passage footwell is a game changer, glove box was pretty useless anyway. keep up the good work
Wow, I had no idea it did that!! Pretty mind blowing tech in such an old car. Thanks for the info!
When you had the dash out, my first thought was "Why not build a simple custom dash from fiberglass?"
Though a bit messy, here the details behind my thought: cover EVERYTHING, then spray expanding foam generously and after hardening, carve & sand your future dash (incl. where the Energica tach needs to sit). After that cover the it with the final surface, being a few layers of fiberglass. After hardening, remove the fiberglass dash out of the car to remove all the foam and drill holes for mounting all the switches and stuff that need to go in. Then sand it smooth, prime and cover with a coat of matt grey to match any existing plastics. That would also provide a mounting/hiding spot for a simple defogger (e.g. a 12V PC fan with a 12V heating element to provide a clear windscreen during rainy season)...
Keep pushing - love following the project!
Dude this is EXACTLY what I'd love to do once all the new stuff is in. It'll look like a mess for a long time while I get everything converted, but those final details will be a lot of fun. Thanks for watching!
I've removed seats and other non-essentials from cars both in NZ and the US. In my case it was to make room for two large huskies and install some equipment for overnight trips and 4WDing, but there's just something incredibly satisfying about taking a car down to its bare bones and feeling the difference all that weight loss makes.
Man seats are sooo heavy! Those probably make the most weight difference in the interior. I want to see how light I can get this car, not just because the battery will be heavier than the engine, but to keep it a fun car to drive 😁
In todays episode of can Sam fold like origami to fit under the dash….
That bar looks like a pretty handy grab rail for terrified passengers!!
RIP the funky radio display :/
Haha yeah! I love that head unit but it's way too heavy. However.. if I can get the car light enough, I can always put it back in after it's certified. We'll see how it goes.
Great work man. When it starts raining while i'm wrenching, I call it a day.
Thanks! I really need to get this thing in the garage.
😂 ends up pulling the entire car apart to remove 2 bolts . Story of my life! That rusty horizontal pipe is a aftermarket stiffner that someone has put in there , thats a really cool race car feature.
Is it really?? Nah, I'm pretty sure that's a stock support brace. It's gotta be.. otherwise it'd have some hilarious Japanese tuning shop name on it XD
I've never seen a car without that same factory brace, always rusty. I have no idea why they don't paint them.
@@spike_spencer thats crazy , it looks like a shop job youd find . Bung it in there and get racing .
Just binged the whole build do far. Love it
NICE haha cheers man! It's gonna take forever but I'm excited about it :D
Looks easier than most cars in my experience. I'd highly recommend getting a cordless 3/8 drive electric socket wrench, I got mine for $32USD and it makes life so much more enjoyable and saves me a ton of time.
Time to get familiar with carbon fiber, some carbon seats, door cards, and custom dash would be the ultimate way to go and you'll gain so much interior space along with looking great and saving even more weight.
Great idea! The factory door cards aren't that heavy, but I'd love carbon panels with little straps 😂 A shop in Japan makes carbon door skins (the outside part) so those are on my list of things to get if/when the car needs to be even lighter.
Can't wait to see this build come together!
Thanks Jon! It'll take a long time but I'm having fun with it :)
The whole thing looks so daunting to me AND you still find the time and energy to record everything! Thanks For taking us along in your tinkering journey, I really do love the whole video series
Thanks man! Glad you're liking it so far 😁 I'll do some more motorcycle videos soon but I think I'll shift to mostly car conversion stuff for winter here.
Phones do still have headphone jacks if you try hard enough. It's funny that you pay a premium for some of these brands and they wanted to skimp out on a .50 cent port that gives you more options rather than less... The more people raised a stink about it the more some phone makers reversed their stance on this. But yeah, I can imagine just a couple of blue tooth speakers from the house and a phone would be easier than keeping that old radio. I figure a lot of the inconvenience in that dash was because they never expected someone would be ripping the car apart to do an E-swap. I'm also thinking that the dash probably offered some sound deadening for the cabin. Hopefully, the quieter motor should offset anything you lose there.
True! Great points. I'm definitely leaning toward making my own now.. at least a panel to mount buttons to. Depends how race car I want this thing to look in the end haha. I thought about door cards with little pull straps as well, but the stock ones are super lightweight already. We'll see! It's only the beginning.
There are adapters to convert Bluetooth back to jack so you could keep the original speakers. Probably better sound than Bluetooth speakers.
@@matthieulabas yeah that's a possibility if I go back to the original head unit and speakers. Once I get it converted and certified I'll decide what stuff to put back in.
Nice! Had to stop watching Watches and Wonders for this my man 😅 been waiting!
Aw thanks Richard! I appreciate it 😂
@@NewZeroland I'm actually headed to my parents house to disassemble my Ego for repairs afterwards 😅
@@roodick85 oh wow, what's wrong with it??
@@NewZeroland not accepting a charge anymore. Gotta go digging around for a bad circuit or a hopefully just a bad main fuse 🙏🏾
7:11 usually it depends on where you source your components...
A vehicle is made by many different parts from different manufacturers often around the world.
True! I know Harleys have imperial nuts and bolts. That's wild. As far as I know though, the input sizes on tools are imperial everywhere.
Pls make a playlist for this series🫡
Ohhh that's right! There is one but I forgot to add this video to it. Thanks 😁
Dash's Dashes - - - Dash something , anyway , are way over rated, give the bar a nice lick of paint, and you could bolt all sorts of stuff to the bar, dials, cup holders, speaker holder, cat holder (maybe not the last one)
I could wrap it with alcantara hahaha! And you sold me on the cat holder. I have to make this happen now.
@@ghostbeatpp1 😂😂😂
I don't think you should 'plug' your heater hoses. You should connect them together so the water pump has a place to flow coolant (if you plan on driving it still.) When the engine is cold and the thermostat is closed, the heater hoses are the only place coolant can flow.
Thanks for the advice! That's a great point. I'll get a hose connector and join those two. I won't be driving it much but blowing it up wouldn't be good lol.
Agreed. I'm fairly sure you'll overheat the engine if you block the circuit from flowing between those 2 pipes.
@@Jazda phew! Thanks for the heads up, guys 😂
Exactly, you always loop heater core hoses if you remove the core. If the car was staying ICE I'd say just upgrade the radiator and hose routing.
You could reuse those speakers at home, it could be interesting.
Or sell to people who have an use for some cool DIY speakers.
Definitely! I'll try and sell or reuse as much of this stuff as possible. Whatever I haven't broken XD
You could probably use the car's antenna for a 20km RF transceiver built off of one of the 5km transceivers. Remote control Honda Beat... just sayin' Hook it up to a little arduino with some relays and actuators maybe a little can shield to control anything powered... like windows if they are not manual. Regular Knightrider KITT car.
:O sweet mother of awesome that would be the coolest ever!
Nice ,now you have plenty of room for LED lighting
I like the way you think 😂
If you can get a wiring diagram.. put the harness on a diet.. keep all essential functions and integrate new options as needed.
Great idea 😎 I probably won't keep much of this harness at all in the end!
I had to remove the dash board of a Twingo to change the ventilator motor, it's incredible how similar those two dashboards are. I also had to take out the whole dash, and there was also a bolt in the engine bay (1st gen Twingo, so at the front) attaching the motor. Smh.
Wow that's wild 😂😱 That designer must have owned a Beat.
LEG ROOM!
The most important room
Okay, so fiberglass or 3d print a new dash. That way you can get what you want. Say a tablet dash mount for maps.
Exactly! Lots of custom mounting points for Energica switches :D
Wonder if you could do a 3D scan of the dash then 3D print a smaller custom dash.
That's a cool idea! Making my own is definitely appealing. There's a lot of weight and unnecessary stuff I don't need anymore, so that might be the way to go.
@@NewZeroland if you go this route, I'm preparing an alternative dashboard for Energica bikes (testing on Ribelle) that will work on Android (phone or tablet) connected directly to the CAN bus, so you can make some room in your custom 3D-printed dash for a cool tablet and get a Model S/X look inside The Beat! 🤩
@@matthieulabas duuuude! That might be too big and crazy for this little car, but I'm intrigued. Definitely keep me posted!
@@NewZeroland sure will do! Not too sure I'll finish before you do though 😅 gimme a couple more months... 🏃
@@matthieulabas the race is on!
Hey just fyi I think here in NZ you need a fan and vents to demist the windscreen.
I'll check out the rules on that, but I want to put a smaller electric heater in eventually.
@@NewZeroland nice! 12v hair driers are a thing for campers etc
@@nathanchalecki4842 haha yeah totally going the cheap and lightweight route for this one :D
You also need a dashboard of some sort for a WOF.
@@ZoneKei man what a buzzkill XD
Hello! Brilliant video...can I buy your gathers from you? Genuine request
Thanks! Maybe.. a local Beat owner is interested but if he doesn't take it I'll keep ya posted.
@@NewZeroland Much appreciated🙂🤘
You need a bigger wrench to lose more weight!
MORE TORQUE!
@@NewZeroland that too!
Please stop the electrification of nice cars
Why?
You might have seen Elon see the light of HYDROGEN Fuel Cell Tech ! With the big 4 in Japan all together agreeing on the direction too free up the water as exhaust, you know I’ve been a fan as long as I can remember !
@@TheLrb12c at the moment, hydrogen doesn't make sense. Storage doesn't work and there aren't any refueling stations in all of NZ 😂 Also the process to get the hydrogen mostly comes from natural gas, so electric is still cleaner and easier to make yourself if you have solar panels.
First?!
Noooo I was tooooo laaaate
@@pinaero Hell has frozen over :O
Mwahahahaha, the power is mine!
