The reason The River Spirit had garbage and was disgusting at first is because the river he embodies had a lot of litter thrown into him by humans

This is a movie best understood as themes with underlying tones. Such as environment, growing up, getting your first job, falling in love, friendship, losing your identity to work, being true to who you are despite your environment. And many more that is beneath what seems like a crazy kids movie. Its a movie that anyone can watch and find their own life lesson in it. That is what makes it such a powerful and wonderful film. The fact that none of these themes are just exposition like most movies but found is why its a masterpiece.

The reason the Chihiro knew the dragon was Haku is that very early in the film after Haku show's Chihiro her parents and the part, she looks up in the sky and sees the dragon fly away from exactly where Haku was. And she says, "A dragon?" meaning, "so Haku is also a dragon?" She is not 100% sure about this, which is why she is reassured when the bloody dragon turns back into the unconscious Haku in boy form in the basement. That's the first time she knew for sure that what she suspected was true.

A more straight forward answer would be that "Haku" has the meaning "White" in Japanese and Chihiro made the link when she tries to call out to the white dragon during the attack. Similar deal with Chihiro(千尋) renamed to Sen(千) because Sen is a alternative pronunciation of the kenji 千 in her name.

@kingeric1992 that would be the most complicated answer for a non native

when Chihiro offers river spirit's pill to pigs, all the pigs nod for that chance; while afterward Chihiro made friends with all the bathhouse staffs(saved them from noface), those ten staff in the exam all shook their head, so that Chihiro knows there isn't her parents those pigs. Its about a story of growth, you help people, and people that is not friendly at the first could be your friend at the end, even yobaba.

Thank you for watching the movie. It's really interesting. Part of the reason why Chihiro can recognize Haku may come from the translation, Haku is translated according to the pronunciation, it means white in Japanese, in fact he should be called Mr. White, and the dragon is White Dragon, which is more like a human's usual name in the Chinese translation, so Chihiro is aware of the word White. And Faceless is a mirror-like monster, it is not evil nor good in nature, but it will be attracted by human desire, give them what they want and eat them, and their desire will be shown through Faceless, people in bathhouse are very greedy, resulting in their desires are reflected in the Faceless. Chihiro only wants a little help, she didn't want too much, so Faceless couldn't understand and hurt her.

‏That's why his name has (no face) because his soul changed when he was in the bath, he was surrounded by greed and selfishness etc, and when he went out, he became more kind.

This movie, even without background and real meaning is amazing, but when you know Miyazaki's official statement about story, you will be just shocked, moved and this movie have completely different feeling... Just masterpiece.

A subtlety that is not apparent in English is that when Yubaba takes the kanji of her name, one character is left. In "Chihiro" it is the character pronounced "chi." But on its own it is pronounced "sen," hence her being called "Sen." The kanji means "thousand."

7:50 The tunnel leads to the world of the gods and the dead. Chihiro is an alien that should not exist in this world, so she is being erased. And her parents were turned into pigs because they broke the rules of this world.
16:28 Japan is a polytheistic country. They are bathhouses where gods and spirits, not animals or monsters, come to relax and unwind. By the way, Rin has a human form, but she is just a fox spirit disguised as a human.

The "chi(千)" part of "Chihiro(千尋)" means thousand and is read the letter alone as "sen" in japanese.

the merging of japanese/world fairytale elements in this film is phenomenal; it's so universal regardless of your background (never eat the food in the "fairy" realm or you'll be stuck there, giving them your name gives them control over you, etc. the alice in wonderland nods - yubaba is modeled after the original illustrations of the queen of hearts iirc! the lessons about greed, about kindness, about your being stronger than you realize. there's enviromentalist tones with haku's origins and the other river spirit. even very adult fears like employment=survival and economies going bust with the mention of the theme parks in the 80's and the train in the other realm no longer going both ways! the layers are insane)
also, i don't think this film gets credit enough for its ending. it would be very easy to finagle a disney-esque chihiro returns home with haku/her other friends in tow and her parents learning about all her brave deeds type finale, but what it does is it completes the circle instead. we return to the start of the film with seemingly nothing changed, but that's only on the surface. for something touted (overseas at least) as a children's movie, that's an incredibly complex - almost bittersweet - note to finish on

The Disney dub actually did that, adding a couple of lines to the last scene as the car drives away.

Nah, I think it spoils it. I prefer this ambiguous ending, not the Disney happily ever after version.
