I love the armour that marines wear, it really makes them look like indestructible badasses. Even more so than marines usually are I mean. My grandpa (who was in the army) used to tell me all sorts of stories about marines. Like how he met one in the hospital with no legs who would force his way up the stairs in his wheelchair because he refused to be treated like a cripple. My grandpa also used to say that if an officer gave a marine a shovel and told him that he wanted a hill, the hill would be enemy-free by the end of the day.
this is in pendleton in San Diego. if you live in the north county you can hear stuff. I lived in fallbrook which is on the east side of that range and you could DEFINITELY hear it.
the 120 mm mortar is ideal for short range fire, the ammunition costs little and allows a very fast rate of fire! on a column of enemy troop or on a front line, it is a lot of devastation!
Apparently the Marines have gotten rid of these. The cute little tow vehicle wasn't reliable, and didn't fit well in the Osprey. Also, they upgraded other artillery which was much more effective.
Anytime you engage an enemy you can be killed no matter what weapon you have. But this 120mm mortar will put 13.65 kg of HE on target 9km away and very accurately. It will continue to do so 10 times a minute with a trained crew until they decide to stop or the other guys survivors find a way to make them stop.
This was my specialty in the army. In Serbia.. At first, I thought we were using outdated technology, like mortars, because we are poor, but it turns out it's a very useful weapon. Even the most funded army in the world has it. Our mortar is very loud, this one doesn't seem to be. And it looks better than ours. Our mortar has 270kg when transported. 6.4 km distance (with 6 charges, or whatever you call them) 12 mines per minute 12.5 kg of explosive 120mm made in 1970s by the Soviets.
I feel like if the Marines want heavy indirect that is more mobile, they should take a look at the new M-109A7's. They won't be helicopter deployable but if they kept their M777's and added M-109's I think the Marines could greatly improve their indirect.
I'm not a vet, regretfully, and I suppose this is a practice drill, but isn't there a reason to not have everyone not 'bunched up' together in a tight group?
As they are using a mortar they should be quite a ways away from the enemy, as I've read it's max range limitation is 8,140 m with standard projectiles and 12,850 m with rocket projectiles.
I've read that too. I need someone to explain that to me as well. The French after the 1st world war developed a modern 120mm mortar in a towed, mounted and infantry wheeled versions. They were to be used behind the Maginot line to counter enemy concentrations to prevent breakthroughs. The Soviets produced them in great #s under license from the French. The wehrmacht saw they're value and quickly put them to use as fast as they captured them. After technical drawings were found after the capture of Kharkiv, they were produced in Germany. By 1944 the wehrmacht had abandoned the 15cm howitzer and used 120mm mortars in their place. The units in the field did this with out authorization. The 15cm sig 33 was simply unnecessarily heavy and parts/ammo were in short supply. I assumed the 120mm mortar was a standard weapon for all armys throughout the world after that. Its unthinkable to me to give them up.
+Radius740 They have to get to an area, unload heavy explosives and set up multiple guns, aim those guns so that the explosive rounds will land on the correct target, load, and fire. It's going to take some time. Besides they're usually out in the field for hours if not days before they get a fire mission, this has just been edited.
Well i have never been on the warfield. But i was in mortar coy in army. Ofcourse in warzone its diffrent but when training we were very fast. Unloading and aiming the guns in right direction and first bombs were in target in no time compared to this. I know that training is diffrent story but still i would think that our group would be faster. I would love to join mortar coy again. Best time of my life.
+Radius740 i bet it goes 3 times faster if 1 person did the whole thing. but then you´d need to have a person who can do more than 1 task and those are hard to find in the military.
Mortar is being fired @ 6:08

Judd Austin I live 60 miles from an army base. When they are training on artillery you can feel the impact and hear a low thump sound.

M 327 is French mortar !!
artillery is the smart weapon in the army!
@@user-ww7wz2gs4syes totally agree, the most clever and the most effective
Yip it can stretch out to 7k and ruin someone's day..trained on the smooth boar 120 in the late 90's .great weapon and it is Loud..lol
A bit late for the answer, but on the battlefield mortars are and always have been the main killers.
Beautiful metal beasts

How to counter such an object ?
Put thousand of mini zaplins with 360 cameras in sky and detect the mouse.
What caliber is this system ? Do you still use aiming stakes ?
I thought this was a rifled mortar ?
Round looked fin stabilized.
120mm mortars. Yes we still used aiming stakes for these little guys.
Later versions are rifled ..
So, what kind of vehicles where those? Looked an awful lot like the military jeeps I drove in the 80s.
+Chris Williams I want one

l like the vehicle that tows the mortar. Any info. on what it's designation is?? And is the mortar a Weapons Company t o & a or???
Considering this is an FA asset and not IN, might as well have just bought the 105s and the better range and accuracy.
the M-327 is the french 120mm BRANDT sold to US Army...

What are those Turd Wagons they are driving?
yeh like the modern take on an older jeep brilliant design of an icon!!

+Hebrew Hammer false, only on large caliber weapons mounted to a chassi, no small caliber mortars use automatic or auto assisted loading
