I just cleaned my EGR passages today on my 04 odyssey and was amazed at how much buildup was on it, I got right to work. The car has 327k miles, and reliable as ever.
Be aware that in many cases it's more difficult to clear ALL affected blocked passages besides the "easy ones" associated with the "intake"... In addition, please consider the following... P0401 - EGR Insufficient Flow * Upper Intake Plenum down thru Coolant Crossover to EGR (square output port) will clog with carbon * Lower Exhaust Plenum down thru Coolant Crossover to EGR (round input port) will clog with carbon - Can often work clear using brake, carburetor, throttle body and/or Valvoline EGR cleaner - Utilize a flexible braided cable like a plumbing snake... - Utilize shop vac then air compressor to remove all debris - Entire upper and lower plenum passages must be cleared... Can be a real PITA, but necessary to actually keep code from recurring...
I have an 03 Odyssey EX-L with 295,000 miles on it that we bought brand new. I've never had that problem. I change my oil myself religiously ever 5,000 miles with Mobil1 full synthetic oil and add a bottle of Chevron fuel system cleaner with every oil change. I only use Quiktrip regular gas. I've taken the van on several really long road trips and when I do, I always make sure I run it in the higher RPMs to get rid of some of the carbon build up in the engine. You'd be surprised how much better your car runs after that.
Just did this on my 2003 Acura TL! Never had a code of any sort but mine was absolutely filthy after 200,000 Miles. Very similar to yours in the video. Thanks for the help!
This fixed the problem on my 2004 Honda Odyssey. It was idling ruff and chugging between 45 and 55 mph! Thank you very much for your time, and posting this video!
Hmmmm i have the chugging at 45-50 for years already nevrr got worse and today its misfire with intermittent blinking check engine and tcs light( tranny is still shifting butter smooth).
i thank you for your help, for so many months i was wondering what was going on to may 02 odyssey but thanks to your video i did exact same thing and it worked out, thank youuuu.
HOLY SHIT!!! How was Hilda even running? Poor thing couldn't catch a breath if her life depended on it. I'm thinking I might need to do this with Harriet. She's an 04 with 228,000 miles and boy had she been good to me so far. I kinda feel like I've let her down after watching this shit.
Has your engine light come back on? Or is it still ok? My 2004 was giving the code P1491, which is EGR trouble but the engine was still running smooth. The dealer wanted $300 plus labour. I decided to clean it myself. Mine was not nearly as bad as yours but I cleaned out the top part like you did. However, I didn't actually remove the EGR valve itself. The light was gone and the engine seemed to run better but that could have been my imagination. Anyway, after half and hour the light came back on along with the TCS light. Do you think I should have removed the EGR valve itself? Maybe all the carbon deposit went down into the lower part and is clogging it up? Any insight? Good video by the way.
Cuzimada Papushkian the check engine light has not come back on but I did remove the sensor and make sure to thoroughly clean everything as well as having used brake clean and blowing out all of the openings with compressed air. I would recommend using brake clean and Blasting all the passages clear before replacing the sensor. thanks for watching!
I took the manifold off my 2006 Odyssey after 210,000 and these passages were clean. It leads me to believe something else is causing the problem. Also, I live in California where most gas is 10% ethanol, so I’m not convinced that is the cause.
Roflmfao at all the carb cleaner cans in the background! I almost want to watch this a third time to see if I can find any more cans in the background. Haha.
I have a 2002 Odyssey and it's not all rusted and have water stains all over the metal like yours, if you don't live near the ocean you must drive that thing underwater all the time.
After you clean it up,within a year or 2 it will start throwing the codes again.ive been meaning to clean mine again. Get ya a vacuum and a pick and get as much out as ya can.then take ya some brake/carb/intake cleaner and spray it all down real good and wipe it all clean.bout all you can do. I do believe this is being caused by cheap gas!!

Wow. Amazing. That’s double the mileage of my 2003 odyssey. 😊

i cleaned the cap but i didnt realize there were port holes on the engine that had to be cleaned out, great vid

Best explanation ever! Thanks! My kids named our 2002 Odyssey Big Bertha!!!

What was the code p0401?
I'm a beginner. How exactly do you clean out the port holes from the top? just scrape it out upwards? Spray brake cleaner in there?
Carburetor cleaner works best. To clean out the holes use a small drillbit and work your way up to a larger one until it’s opened up enough
What happens if I cleaned everything but didn’t take my egr valve off?
Did you replace the gaskets on the intake cover and egr valve, or did you reuse existing gaskets?
Did you only had a code or the van wasn't performing?
What did you use to blow out that port? An air compressor? Im trying to think of what i could use to clean mine out with
What were the torquing ranges for the intake cover and the two nuts securing the EGR valve?
I saw a video that said 16lbs
what is that gunk and where did it come from?
can u dive with this problem till u can get it cleaned?
Dustin Bormann yes, absolutely! you won't get the best mileage or performance.
thanks for watching!
what did you use to clean the passage ways?
Can that work on odyssey 09

I'll give that a try and let you know how it goes. Thanks again.
Cuzimada Papushkian u fix it? TCS light still on
what mileage is no you van? what torque spec is the cover screw ? thanks for your video.
eastbay40386 235k I'm not site on the torque spec. Thanks for watching!
What is the mileage
Is this a symptom of a bigger problem, or do all cars get clogged like this after a while?
I am not 100% but I believe this is being caused by cheap ethanol gas!! And every year or two you need to pull it apart to clean.

what will happen if i dont put silicon on the gasket?
Lance Yazzie intake leak, weird idle, possible check engine light.
thanks for watching!
Victor, do you put silicone on top after you put back the metal gasket?
Thanks for sharing this video amazing job
I am going to do this to my 04 just because now!
Dave Vayder haha yup there was an amazing amount of crap in there! Good luck, and thanks for watching!
Una pregunta;
el empaque se pone nuevo?
Pienso que seria lo correcto ponerla nueva
I did this but now getting misfire codes, p0301, p0304, p0305
Never mind - my bad! I reinstalled the gasket upside down, everything's good now.
es causa de que se prenda el vtm4?
Vtm4 = AWD problema
Thanks for the video Victor! Its very informative and doesn't seem to crazy hard to clean. Mostly time consuming if anything. Thanks again buddy.
HaPPyPwNy thanks for watching!

HaPPyPwNy lol that's what happens when you own 6 cars at once, I'm down to 5 now. Thanks for watching!
I'm going to check out. This later on my next day off
h22sparks good luck thanks for watching!
victor de la puente, jr. Did the car idle like shit when you started it when it was clogged?
U on it👍
I have a 2002 Odyssey and it's not all rusted and have water stains all over the metal like yours, if you don't live near the ocean you must drive that thing underwater all the time.
eksine I bought this van for $300. the previous owner wasn't very good to her cars.
Thanks for watching
thanks

i like the names on them cars.
Watch your.language, your mom may be listening.
Did mine last year and for some reason seemed to lose some power. Changed the coils and plugs too, maybe that had something to do with it...
Same here. What kinda plugs did you use?
