Your video here is so useful, and to also list and link all the items as well is brilliant. Thank you so much. It's given me the confidence to open the same laptop up in order to change the hard drive myself now.
Thanks! Helpful video. Looking to buy used one off e-bay and wondered about upgrade possibility. This video answered my questions. Much appreciated in Knoxville, Tennessee!
If this is the secondary disk (mine has an M2 primary for the OS), you may need to initialize the disk after installation. On Windows, go to 'Disk Management' (buried in the shambles of the partially-replaced 'Control Panel' in Windows 10 - though is findable via 'Start > Search'). You'll see something like "Disk 0 - uninitialized". From there you can initialize it. I chose the GPT option which is more modern and supposedly better. Then you'll need to create a 'Volume' and format it. I chose `exFAT` because it's more compatible with other OSs - I might want to set up a dual boot some day. Success! I was about to take the computer apart again to check if I'd plugged the cable in properly or something, or consider returning the disk as faulty. You do not get any notification from Windows that there's a new piece of hardware fitted. Hope this information helps someone else avoid that too. Thanks for the video. Gave me confidence to do the job myself.

Hello. Great video. Question . I have the same laptop and I just ordered a 32g ram and a 1tb ssd. My laptop came with a 1tbhdd but no ssd. When I add the ssd do I have to do anything? Or just pop it in and it will do the rest? Thanks
My laptop details are: Memory 12 GB, processor Inter Core i5-8250U CPU @ 1.60 GHz (cores 4), logical processors 8); windows 10 Home. I would like to up grade it installing a SSD and more memory. My question is where should I look to get compatible good quality parts? 1 TB SSD and 2 x 16GB Memory. Thanks in advance,

You don't really have a choice. The original Dell battery is LiPo and you should stay with that, but even if you get an aftermarket battery, it will still use LiPo chemistry.

You can fit any 2.5" SATA SSD in place of the hard drive, or add an M.2 2280 NVMe SSD in the M.2 slot. A pair of 16GB DDR4-2400 (or 2666) modules will give you 32GB. Suitable parts are linked in the description.
Thanks so much. This is super helpful. I want to upgrade my 2TB HDD to a 1TB SSD and have found a RUclips video which shows how to clone with Acronis software. I was then thinking of adding in a NVME boot drive as well. Do I need to clone anything on to the new boot drive or do I simply plug it in and hit F2 and ensure that the BIOS runs it? I can't find a simple video that explains the software bit of installing a new boot drive onto a laptop like this. Any help would be amazing. Thanks!

Okay, sooooo ... at the end of this video, you still have a 15.6" brick. Now how did you install Windows (or another OS) on the new SSD? BTW, with prices on storage dropping at the rate it has been, I'd recommend getting a 2TB hard drive. If you really only need 1TB, I'd get a 1TB 2.5" SATA SSD (not HDD), because even the cheapest available SSD radically outperforms any hard drive, and barely costs more.

Not that I'm aware of.

1TB drives work fine. The support specs are purely because Dell never offered it with a 1TB drive.
