  • Want to test yourself on a "category 1" climb? Try the Reno Wheelmen Mt Rose Hill Climb....
The Mount Rose Climb on the East Side of the Sierra's starts just south of Reno, Nevada at an elevation of just over 5000 feet (1500 m) and climbs to the Mount Rose Summit at 8900 feet (2700 m) in a distance of just under 14 miles (22 km).
This is a climb that has been used by such notable pros as Greg Lemond, Bobby Julich and Tony Cruz to get ready for racing in the Grand Tours of Europe.
Each year the Reno Wheelmen sponsor a hill climb series - the final of which is the Mount Rose Climb from the Reno side. This video shows this year's competitors - suffering as the gasp for air on this rarified climb.
Tony Cruz, who raced with Lance Armstrong on US Postal and Discovery, and who lived and raced in Reno and road with the Reno Wheelmen, describes the climb and gives his recommendations for improving your time on this tough category 1 climb.
