My dad witnessed the f-16 north babylon. At 3pm. While he was practicing for exam on house garden, he saw the plane flying in low and high speed. The f-16 flew above from south babylon towards baghdad. Everyone thought it was just an iraqi jet until they heard on radio that Tamuz reactor got hit by Israeli f-16
Some facts. 1) The mission was beyond the F-16A's operational range, General Dynamics didn't believe it was possible. 2) On the F-16, the drop tanks are not designed to be jettesoned in flight, this is a dangerouse procedure and not recomended 3) To reduce weight, some critical systems were removed from the jets. 4) After taxiing just before launch at the end of the runway, the jets were topped off in what's known as "hot refueling" with the engines running and fully armed. A hazardous procedure. 5) The strike was planned and timed to be on a Sunday and inbetween work shifts, as there were still French technicians at Osiak, and to minimize casualties. 6) Intelegence had gotten hold of the Soviet codes for the radar instalations, to switch them to maintenance - diagnostic mode, which effectivly defeated most of the defences.
According to David Ivry, IAF commander at the time, the range to target was beyond the F-16A's official US combat radius charts with specific combat configurations, the IAF created their own charts with the planes configured with a minimal bomb load. Certified procedures at the time were to drop bombs with drop tanks attached but there was a risk that jettisoning drop tanks while carrying a bomb load may cause the tanks to hit the bombs. The system removed was an external ECM pod to save ~7% drag. ECM was handled by the F15 escorts. Awesome Mission again Cap. Always entertaining. FYI, Iraq did have the SA-6(2K12), the SA-2(S-75) and the SA-3(S-125) for some reason never picked up the SA-5. The Air Defense System upgraded after this Raid was the French Designed KARI system which added several radars and sensors to the established systems. Of course this system was successfully defeated in 1991. Cheers!!

@trespire Extra facts, Isreal was able to contact Iran and get permission if needed for the Strike Force to land in Iran. Colonel Ilan Ramon was IIRC Dash 8 of the Vipers. Just got some photos of some of the very Vipers used on the Raid last year at Langley AFB, being flown by Top Aces.
For anyone wanting to read more there is an excellent book written in 1987 by Dan McKinnon who interviewed some of the pilots who actually flew the mission called Bullseye One Reactor... One thing even General Dynamics stated that they did not believe the F-16 could fly that far with the load they carried and the load they carried 2 2000lb bombs 3 tanks and 2 AIM-9's was not even cleared at this point and no-one had dropped tanks with bombs on the racks also the mission was touch and go with what they were doing with what to the Israeli's at the time was a new jet I believe they had only be operating it for around a year at this point...
and about the "takeoff base" : F-16s from Etzion Base (also known as Air Force Base 10), today Taba Int' , the base was evacuated as part of the peace agreement between Israel and Egypt, and was moved to a newly established airport called "Uvda" (the numerical name remained Air Force Base 10). The home base of the F-16 aircraft was at the time the Ramat David base, but for the purpose of the operation they deployed to the Etzion base, which was more isolated (for confidentiality reasons) and closer to the target, considering the bypass of Jordanian territory. F-15s from their home base in Tel-Nof.
The Israelis have done a lot of stuff they have been condemned for at the time, but people have been very grateful for in the end. I don't want Iran to have any nuclear reactors or weapons either, btw.. Hint hint.

23:38 French reactors are typically "breeder reactors." They use semi-stable fuels like uranium 238 or thorium 232 and bombard them with neutrons creating plutonium 239 or uranium 235. The resultant material is more fissile than the parent material.

You really need to do more homework. First of all, there were no F-15A aircraft, but F-15B two-seater aircrafts for electronic warfare operations.(definitely no F-15Es in 1981). Another thing is that the F-16 structure flew at such a low altitude (less than 300 feet above sea level) that it was not detected at all on Saudi radar screens (only AJAX aircraft could detect them and coincidentally they were looking towards Iran and not Israel at the time), on the way back they flew high and in a direct line to Israel, which was not the Saudis' intention at all, as there was no impersonation of Saudi aircraft (they also flew radio silent except of reports of passing key waypoints, like border crossings, made with a few code words). In terms of radiation, the reactor was delicate in construction (this is also one of the reasons the attack was scheduled before it was "hot"), so there was no chance of radiation from the bombing.
