Hello James, this is a tale of frustration after being informed and finding that your car(s) are insured, but there was a "gremlin" to stop you finding your your proof of insurance to show the policeman!! It is one of those three things that I am constantly worrying about concerning my car = road tax, insurance and MoT documents!! I actually carry a copy of the documents in the car, such is my mindset about being legal!! Good to know that you are "legal" too with all of your cars!! Take care and best wishes from Lincolnshire!!
I have to say, I am always shocked on British police shows that no one seems to have documents with them, even fairly innocent people. Here in the US, you are expected carry your license, registration and proof of insurance with you. But maybe those are outliers?
@@ckm-mkc That's because in the UK every police person has access to our Details online. The ANPR brings up all your details instantly before you ever get stopped. Most drivers do carry there licences with them for ID purposes and to prove to a Police person who is actually driving. So we really have no need to carry any other documents. Even if it was an ordinary person we can still find out in seconds online for Free if a vehicle is Taxed,MOTD and Insured just from the registration plate. It's really handy when buying a vehicle because we can see all previous MOT,s with details of anything that it had failed on any advisories plus annual mileage for the car's entire life. We even have phone Apps that bring up all the details for Free. I always use the App before shopping for a new secondhand car.😉😊
@@ckm-mkc Most people do carry their licence, as it's a handy form of universally accepted ID. As far as registration goes, it's bad practice to keep it with the vehicle, as if the vehicle is stolen then it becomes a lot easier to sell on etc. (even though the V5C explicitly states it is not proof of ownership, most people treat it as though it does). A printed out insurance certificate proves nothing other than you had a valid policy at the time it was printed - you could have cancelled the policy straight after, or had it cancelled by the insurer (or just have printed a fake document). While it obviously makes it easier to provide your policy number/insurer at the time, the details should be easily available to the police from the MID by using the vehicle registration number.
I live in Warrington, a busy area in the North West and use the motorways a lot. About 9 months after renewing my insurance the RFL needed renewing, went online and was told car wasn't insured. Checked that i'd paid it, but found the certificate was wrongly dated, it showed the previous years date. Soon sorted with insurance company but I was amazed that I hadn't been pulled up for "no insurance"
As a previous Citroen owner, whilst the cars are highly desirable, they are prone to faults that are hard to track down and leave you with a feeling that the same problem will come back. I hope this DS is now fixed, but a full warranty on these cars is a must. You were lucky to have been stopped by rare officer that had the patience to wait until you sorted the insurance out. Some insurance companies are very poor at updating your details to the MID system, the only time i was pulled for no insurance was due to the new company failing to update for over 14 days, i was also lucky that the officer phoned them, as i had the policy with me.
James I see a lot of parallels between what you do and what I do,when I have a lot of stock unprepared to the standard I like, I just list it anyway and worry about getting it to standard upon sale. Not ideal but every now and then the customer isn’t even bothered and doesn’t see the things I see. Good luck keep up the good work.
Good job fixing the ds , been driving 20 years and have always put trade plates in the windows and never been stopped and only ever put personal vehicles on policy never anything for sale
I had a 2010 Peugeot 308 GTI (200bhp) - it had a new cam chain and tensioners, cylinder head, 2 water pumps for the turbo, water pump, coolant housing and that’s just what I remember off the top of my head - when it ran well it was great, when it wasn’t it was shockingly bad
You were lucky with police mate you only get 7 days to put them on the data base, you could have been for it, I put my trade plates on the ins data base, hats off to Rob and Chris hopefully saving the day on the pug.
James I’m in the trade you need at least 10 cars for sale at any one time , employ a car cleaner full time , that then leave you to concentrate on finding/buying/ listing and any repairs required , you can not do it all yourself mate
I changed water pump on my wife old 308 1.6 Prince engine. Its weird that the belt doesn't actually go around the water pump. I took driver side front wheel off and arch liner and there it was. Fairly easy to do actually.
I've been going to the same garage for years and discussed with the mechanic about buying a Mini for my wife, he told me to steer clear due to problems with the engines especially the petrol engines. Same as in the D3!
You we're very lucky with the Policeman. Someone I know was stopped in London. The Police went round the car, including open the boot. He said what's that? Tools. What for? For my work (builder). His car was then towed to the pound and had to get a taxi home. Reason: his insurance was coming up as valid, but did not including clause travelling to and from work! He had to pay about £150 to get his car back. Moral never talk to the Police, you have a right to remain silent, means just that. This Policeman did you a favour but in other parts of the Country they would have towed you first and you sort it out (later)!
When I used to have trade plates when working in London we had magnetic ones that went on the bonnet and back of the car, after we kept getting stopped by the police because they couldn't see them in the window.
Hi James, given you have 20 cars and 2 for sale, you're obviously stretching yourself a bit thin. You might like to consider a remote admin to help you? I previously used a charge-per-hour service called the "Invisible Assistant" who were very good. They will take on all the mundane tasks and leave you free to focus. Just a thought (I'm not in any way connected to that business btw).
Same design on a 207. It's for Euro 5 emissions. The water pump doesn't run when the engine is cold, this warms the engine up quicker reducing emissions. The waterpump is driven off a friction drive actuator that lowers itself onto the water pump once the engine requires cooling. Agreed it's a dumb set up. Replaced the same parts on mine as well as the entire timing gear. Still a rattly engine.
So what was wrong with having a mechanical thermostat to do exactly the same job? Manufacturers will do anything to make their product more reliant on the main dealer network for diagnostics, repairs, servicing etc..... It properly winds me up. Thinking about it, if they wanted to go down this road, they could have just made the water pump electric and done away with a belt drive completely to reduce parasitic loss/drag on the driveline. That would also free up the pump to be in an easier to access position than on the accessory drive end of the engine.
@@nickmaclachlan5178 It does also have an electric water pump which only runs when the car is off to cool the turbo, and it's even got an electronic thermostat, BMW really done a number on this engine, thankfully PSA fixed it for the Euro 6 regs
@@ashliehiggins Jesus H Christ, I'm so glad I got out of the car repair business in 2008........ diagnosing vehicles like this must be a fricking nightmare.....
@@nickmaclachlan5178 I actually thought that's what you have a thermostat for 🤔 which opens when the coolant reaches operating temperature. 🙄Geez they'll dream up something crazy next. If it ain't broken don't try to fix it. 😉😊
@@stephenjones9153 Likewise, they claim it's for emissions control, but that sounds like a load of hogwash. Car engines spend 99.9% at or near operating temperature. The excess emissions emitted during warm up periods would be so small as to be insignificant. I always say the over complication of cars is just down to the manufacturers trying to wring more out of the customer in aftermarket sales and services, no more. Just FYI, I know a thing or two about combustion and emissions as I am a commercial combustion engineer and deal with Power station boilers etc.....
Yes but the issue becomes James like me pays a fair chunk extra for stock cover, so should some hero try and half inch one or five motors over night we have some claim ability.
I had a Peugeot 207 Gti, same engine as the DS3, never missed a beat, had timing chain done a year in of ownership under Peugeot's warranty even though the car was 5 year old as it was a known fault
That must have been the only copper in North Devon,I'm around that area every day and never see one. Lucky you bumped into the one copper who wasn't providing cover to Tiverton or Bideford.
The belt doesn’t run the water pump it’s that black plastic piece runs the water pump, what it does when it’s cold it doesn’t turn the water pump until it warms up, as it’s electronic it moves backwards & forward on demand and hit the belt. 🤞it’s sorted!
When I had my nearly new 93K 1st Generation 405 1.6GR I had to change the timing belt before 24k miles. I loved 405s&406s but only PSAs TDs&HDIs were great engines.
@@devilmahon666 I also had a 405 1.9TD GLX 95N &2 x 406 2.1TDs 97P &2.0HDI 110bhp 2004. I didn't like my 306 1.8 Sedan. All my 406s were in Diablo Red.
Ah, another early 90's 405 with issues. I just knew I wouldn't have been alone... 405 GRD Estate here, back in the early 90's. No Peugeot's ever again for me. That car was a total financial liability. One thing after another just kept going wrong. It cost me a fortune in the time I had it. I got so pi$$ed off with it in the end, I traded it in for a poverty spec Astra Merit with no power steering and wind up windows, *just* to get rid of it. Not a single thing went wrong with the Astra in two and a half years. Very basic but reliable.... So impressed was I generally with the Astra, I bought a nice 1 year old Astra GLS estate, with the Isuzu diesel up front. Sunroof, alloys, velour trim, leccy windows. I was in seventh heaven! Great little car, which my next door neighbour bought from me when I decided to change it.
I remember that set up when it came out. You’ll love this, the entire over complicated setup is to remove load ie drive during start up to reduce emissions 🤦♂️😆

No traffic cars in north Devon? We had a car nip in yesterday to say they are setting up mobile speed cameras around the parracombe through to lynmouth for the summer. Big BMW motorway beast. They are out there bud. Good vid. 👍
Speaking of water pumps, I changed the water pump on our 2010 Focus 1.6 -bit fiddly but not too bad. Did the water pump on our 2015 1.25 Fiesta which has a broadly similar engine, and it seems some design engineering genius thought it was a good idea to bolt the cam belt tensioner to the water pump meaning you would possible have to change or de-tension the cam belt for no good reason. Is the new generation of engine designers a bit mental "!
I made this comment last Saturday and I'll make it again this Saturday. I'm jolly glad you've uploaded a video 📹 this Saturday evening because again Saturday night TV is 👎😢 and your videos take Saturday night TV to the cleaners.

It must be difficult not doing your own repairs and the like.I don't think I would run garage without my own staff who would carry out prep and repairs , Would rather sub out the cleaning to a valeter
So it's a Citroen...and you sound surprised the Water pump and its drive & tensioner system seems overly complicated and convoluted, Really? The belt is using the reverse to DRIVE the pump using, not the 6 Grooved side of the belt,...but the flat back? How bonkers is that? As for the tensioner being electrically operated....words fail me.
It sounds like one engineer got knocked back by the partner for some horizontal dancing the night before. Due to being upset, they went into work the next day and put this nightmare onto paper, as an "Up yours" to the partner and all unsuspecting owners and mechanics! This was said about the Mitsubishi 380 - the rear spark plug is in a nightmare position to get at; literally half the engine has to be removed to replace the one spark plug!
That water pump looks like a typical example of something that was designed in CAD, quite probably by someone confident in the knowledge that they'd never actually have to even see a real one, let alone fix it!
Funny you should say this Chops.. Think did exactly this to me, apparently a “clerical error”.. one that left 4 cars sitting about uninsured and in the whole scheme of things still probably my responsibility of anything had gone wrong despite same as you having put them on the provided MID login.
My Mini was making a horrible noise..A good local garage diagnosed the timing chain @ 862 pounds. After doing the job the noise was the same so I had a refund and was told to to run it until it goes bang as they could not locate the problem. A few weeks later I found that the water pump pulley was breaking up.30 quid and half an hours work it was cured.
How do u have the energy for the gym after all that?! Hope the DS gets fixed, it's a lovely car. I had a diesel RCZ so diff engine and it was amazing... So smooth it's unreal so shame the petrols have some issues. What a drama about the insurance! Glad u got it sorted.
He was still insured, a motor trade policy gives blanket coverage to whatever vehicles we are driving on behalf of our business. Instead on insuring a specific vehicle a motor trade policy gives the policy holder coverage to drive any vehicle Putting them onto the Midas website just puts an official record on them to stop police as in James case being pulled over as the police cars computer flags the vehicles registration as having no insurance.
That's a ridiculous design....... two tensioners, and one of them is electronic? Definitely a case of designers trying to be too clever for their own good. All things considered, the parts were pretty cheap though, just a totally uneccessary expense really....... lets hope it's fixed. On a different tack, WTF was a traffic plod doing cruising through South Molton of all places? I'm thinking he was on a fishing expedition for rural ne'er do wells..........
Likely it was a retrofit to an existing engine design to get slightly better mileage or emissions. Basically, it didn't matter if it was a hack as long as it delivered the numbers with minor costs or engineering changes....
Yours didn’t sound as bad as Salvage Rebuilds RCZ so probably wasn’t as serious and only intermittent however looking at the belt and wheel, as Rob would say… it’s been a belt too long 😂 well done mate. #salvagerebuildsuk #robandchris
It's a part time water pump, The electronic tensioner extends and pushes the flat side of the belt up against the wheel on the water pump, once the water in the cooling system cools down the tensioner retracts again taking the belt away from the water pump 🙂
I bet a little engine management light comes on when it fails ... and 99% of joe public carry on driving. Once pressurised coolant exceeds 120c it turns to vapour and you suddenly have head gasket bothering hot spots forming. 😁🤣
We all regularly learn something from Salvage Rebuilds, I mean no offence to you when I say they are always the first thing on my playlist. Hopefully all will be well now. The insurance situation is shocking, you could have faced a massive loss if you’d had a break in or arson attack, I’s expect a broker to contact me by phone to altert me to a change like that.
I think you paid more for the DS3 parts than SRUK since, from what I can see of the boxes, you got better quality brand aftermarket parts and possibly changed more parts than SRUK, ie tensioner arm. The ASX may be slow to sell since it has gone through many distinctive model year facelifts and yours is an early version. At least you didn't get any cars nicked or vandalised during your insurance problem period...
I wouldn’t buy anything French. I worked at a multi franchise/ car super market. It was always French cars that came back with issues. Especially ones with the Renault 1.5 dci engine as used in Nissans and Mercedes.

@@ckm-mkc Just wondering do you have a similar system like her in UK where you can find out all the details from a car's registration plate.??
As a previous Citroen owner, whilst the cars are highly desirable, they are prone to faults that are hard to track down
and leave you with a feeling that the same problem will come back.
I hope this DS is now fixed, but a full warranty on these cars is a must.
You were lucky to have been stopped by rare officer that had the patience to wait until you sorted the insurance out.
Some insurance companies are very poor at updating your details to the MID system, the only time i was pulled for
no insurance was due to the new company failing to update for over 14 days, i was also lucky that the officer phoned
them, as i had the policy with me.
They are prone to faults because....Citroen!

I always worry people can't see past the minor issues and Ill have to sell cheaper
Same as in the D3!
from memory the prince engine was in mini c3 c2 208 308 rcz and came in 3 versions 1.4 1.6 and 1.6THP
Rob and Chris are great.
I would not go that route. I just show respect and they are normally great I find.
How on earth did you find a police officer in north Devon 😂🤣😀 that’s like spotting a unicorn in a pink tutu.
He didn't mention that they where both wearing Onesey,s 🤣😂🤣😂
It would be interesting to put power through the old one and see if it makes the noise
When I used to have trade plates when working in London we had magnetic ones that went on the bonnet and back of the car, after we kept getting stopped by the police because they couldn't see them in the window.
Have faith in your subscribers man🙂
It's sorted, sell it!
That is one nice looking Jaguar in the background
Technically you are driving on the trade plate number which, as long as you have added that to the database, would mean you are insured.
Yes but the issue becomes James like me pays a fair chunk extra for stock cover, so should some hero try and half inch one or five motors over night we have some claim ability.
Don't price a car you don't want to sell at £2,995, put it at £3,000 - only £5 more but a psychological barrier!
These engines where also found in the pre 2015 peugeot 208 GTI. And unfortunately are known for there issues!
I look at my bank account to see who takes a direct debit for my car insurance on my cars 🤣
An insurance company not telling you,, imagine my shock. And if they got stolen that would have been their excuse not to pay you out
It’s a common issue on Peugeots,Minis and Citroens, the 1.6 petrol
The belt doesn’t run the water pump it’s that black plastic piece runs the water pump, what it does when it’s cold it doesn’t turn the water pump until it warms up, as it’s electronic it moves backwards & forward on demand and hit the belt.
🤞it’s sorted!
When I had my nearly new 93K 1st Generation 405 1.6GR I had to change the timing belt before 24k miles. I loved 405s&406s but only PSAs TDs&HDIs were great engines.

I am an engineer, not a car mechanic, but I'm telling you that there is no valid reason to put a "rubber band" around a pulley.
No traffic cars in north Devon? We had a car nip in yesterday to say they are setting up mobile speed cameras around the parracombe through to lynmouth for the summer. Big BMW motorway beast. They are out there bud. Good vid. 👍
I had a breather valve problem with a Peugeot engine that sounded like a bearing from new and it took 18 months before they fixed it .
Yeah don’t put the swift up for £2995. Someone might’ve actually buy it at that. I’d say £3995 would be better.
Notice the VW UP... just sold one of them also. Cracking little cars. Was a VW UP Black! Same wheels as yours

What a ridiculously over engineered part that water pump tensioner was.
True
Funny you should say this Chops.. Think did exactly this to me, apparently a “clerical error”.. one that left 4 cars sitting about uninsured and in the whole scheme of things still probably my responsibility of anything had gone wrong despite same as you having put them on the provided MID login.
Scary isnt it
Do we get a big discount if we keep our fingers crossed for the MGB mot ? Asking for a friend
MIDAS will only be temporary you can’t renew with them.. the downside is it will be a new insurer with too many restrictions. Tradewise was best
They refunded you? That's pretty straight up!
How do u have the energy for the gym after all that?! Hope the DS gets fixed, it's a lovely car. I had a diesel RCZ so diff engine and it was amazing... So smooth it's unreal so shame the petrols have some issues. What a drama about the insurance! Glad u got it sorted.

lol, a bookie would not take odds on it eh lol
Insurance is scary. What if you'd hit someone or worse?
He was still insured, a motor trade policy gives blanket coverage to whatever vehicles we are driving on behalf of our business. Instead on insuring a specific vehicle a motor trade policy gives the policy holder coverage to drive any vehicle Putting them onto the Midas website just puts an official record on them to stop police as in James case being pulled over as the police cars computer flags the vehicles registration as having no insurance.
@@devilmahon666 Thanks Richard.
The electronic pulley joins the water pump to the crankshaft pulley at a certain temperature.
yep all these big organisations do this, claim they tell you but dont and then change stuff and expect you to know.
Yours didn’t sound as bad as Salvage Rebuilds RCZ so probably wasn’t as serious and only intermittent however looking at the belt and wheel, as Rob would say… it’s been a belt too long 😂 well done mate. #salvagerebuildsuk #robandchris
That engine is well known for unreliable
It's a part time water pump, The electronic tensioner extends and pushes the flat side of the belt up against the wheel on the water pump, once the water in the cooling system cools down the tensioner retracts again taking the belt away from the water pump 🙂
What daft design
I bet a little engine management light comes on when it fails ... and 99% of joe public carry on driving. Once pressurised coolant exceeds 120c it turns to vapour and you suddenly have head gasket bothering hot spots forming. 😁🤣
We all regularly learn something from Salvage Rebuilds, I mean no offence to you when I say they are always the first thing on my playlist. Hopefully all will be well now. The insurance situation is shocking, you could have faced a massive loss if you’d had a break in or arson attack, I’s expect a broker to contact me by phone to altert me to a change like that.
They are the daddies for sure mate
Same engine in my 308 cc and had timing chain done at 40,000 among other things 😬

@13:01 Okay, so collectors target these cars already.
I wonder does the water pump only work when needed? using the pulley and tensioner like a clutch? is that why it has a electronic element to it?
