How do you dislike that? They obviously didn't hear the high E buildup!! Man!
+Rickie Carballo somehow it's possible
+starwarsjunkie7777 i would hit the high E routinely...of course, it wasn't intentional, and it was on the violin... ;)
No one can dislike radovan Vlatkovic at his best. don't worry, he performs the high E in the triple horn and still at the same level. Heard in his majestic presence
Unbelievable vlatkovitc
The horn on the left (First horn) Is a descant horn (Keyed in Bb/High F), Which is more manageable on the high notes (If you look at the score, Schumann had no problems giving the first horn a LOT of high Cs) The other is an Alexander 103, which is a German maker. It has the same tubing as any other double, but they do look a bit weird. If you get the chance to play one, do it. They are fantastic horns.
wonderful to hear this piece played with some finesse, dynamics, and transparency and not the usual non-stop blasting.
The descant horn isn't used to "cheat," it's used so that he can focus a lot more on the art rather than worrying about how impossibly difficult it is to get high notes (such as the E6) out, let alone to sound good.
--For all intents and purposes, a descant horn is another instrument.
--The F side of a double horn is similar to a modern single horn in F, albeit noticeably different.
--A double horn is the standard orchestral horn.
--The piece was written for a single horn in F with a similar bore to the late classical/romantic natural horn.
--A modern single horn in F is more similar to the instrument Schumann wrote the piece for, than any double or descant horn…albeit very different.
--A natural horn in F and a modern horn in F sound somewhat similar, a natural horn in Bb and a modern horn in Bb sound comparatively less similar.
--It is very possible to play the super high notes on a single horn in F. It's just super-duper tricky. If one ain't got the skills, one can hide that lack extremely well on a descant horn.
--The longer a horn is, the more "horne-y" it sounds, and the shorter a horn is, the more trumpety it sounds.
--A baroque TRUMPET (!) is l o n g e r than a descant H O R N.
--A descant horn does not sound much like a horn.
--Is descant horn not used to "cheat"? Well...whatever the case might be, it doesn't matter. Schumann's opus 86 is definitely playable on a single F horn. It's exceptionally difficult, though. Playing the piece on the Bb side of a double horn is way easier. On a descant horn it is easier yet. One could also take a descant horn in very-high Bb to play the piece! Or a trumpet with a large bell wound like a horn. Just put a horn mouthpiece on it and call it a horn!
--Schumann's opus 86 is a show-off piece, especially for the 1st horn. The further away from a single F horn one goes, the less of a show-off it is. So, again: Is a descant horn a cheat? No! But it's pretty much a trumpet/cornet with a large hand-stuffed bell and a horn mouthpiece on the other end.
@@foxfagottjunge6011 My comment is 11 years old. It would be in primary school if it were a child. And I know you didn't have any way of knowing this before responding, but I wrote it when I was a teenager who was good enough at playing the French horn to write authoritatively but not good enough or self-aware enough to realize how shit I was at playing the French horn. I didn't learn that until a few years later. All of this to say, I admire your dedication to responding to a comment that a dumb teenager wrote, who barely knew the first thing about the French horn and has long since forgotten it.
@@foxfagottjunge6011 Yeah bro, submit your recording, then talk
wow Jose Castello is so good... I remember seeing him back when he was still in Gustav Mahler youth orchestra. Glad to see he's getting the recognition he finally deserves!!
This recording alone sets Radovan far apart many other hornists. He chose his colleagues very precisely well for this collaboration.
Radovan Vlatković, es sencillamente espectacular!
I love their treatment of this, possibly the best I have heard.
the first horn part is killer. instead of all the high notes being shared among the soloists, the first horn gets all the high notes throughout the piece
Schumann's' genius.
Shumann had a very pianistic vision of instruments, even his approach to orchestral compositions (Symphonies) arrived late and many passages are very uncomfortable but this makes Shumann a very brilliant and unique composer.
Best E ever at 7:12
Something by Schumann that should be heard more often
This is simply stunning.
Here in Spain we have the honour of have the best horn player, at last the best concertist, the only one who record running.
GRANDE VLATKOVIC
El mejor trompista y el peor inglés.
No se puede tener todo.
There is nothing better than an awesome horn section. Period.
No don trompetas,. Son Trompas😅
Congratulations !!!!!
Yo estuve allí. Bravísimo!!!
Please, please, please post more horn videos!!
Also, can you recommend particular You-Tube channels you appreciate with regard to horn playing, players, etc.
Much appreciated!
(former horn player) -- always one at heart!! :)
Extraklass!!! Bravissimo!!!
lips of IRON!
Perfomace...sublime!!!
And this is why we chose to play french horn in elementary school...
Great & always great performance. Thanks.
I agree! At the time this piece was written, I think hornists were still fiddling with value horns with interchangeable crooks, so a player could have used a valve horn in A, for example...
Such a masterful work....
Bravo brilliance music super
Magnifique.
Hey, THANKS for that info, Marsuvees! Last time I played the French Horn was when I was in college in the 1970s. But I LOVED the French Horn and I still do! :)
Bravissimi
sti
Great performance!!!
It actually could be one of several horns that Paxman has made with that wrap, or another horn that's modeled after the paxman T1/old 40/42 (Patterson descant, perhaps). It's hard to say for sure from the video.
Grandiosi!!
written for 4 solo valve horns. The 2 horns in the orchestra are hand horns.
Impresionante
Absolutely perfect. Wow.
The two solo horns on our left (as you look at the video) look very different. Anybody know what the differences are and how that effects their tone? The second of those two horns looks to have extra tubing, which makes me think it can maybe play lower notes, but I'm just guessing. Anyone KNOW? Thanks! :)
magnífico
Its a fantastic performance, If there was one thing I wish they did, it would be to really PLAY those chords in 3:53. I thought that should've just been massive.
It was still an incredible performance. Vlatkovic's sound is among the best I've heard.
magnifico
@hornplayer84 DANKE!!!
A great Vlatkovic!
Yay playing this in CTO!
muy bien !
@6TrippleC6 That's a Paxman descant model.
Greetings from Brazil.
Supremo, superlativo
Why would you dislike this?
Wow!
Very good
@6TrippleC6 @howcroftmusic @martinusB95
The pre-85 Paxman 40 copies that I know of are the Holton 200, Conn 12D, Hoyer RT91, and Patterson Descant. The easiest way the tell them apart is generally from the 1st and 3rd valve slides, as well as the linkage for the change valve. I would put money on this being a Paxman.
Wooooooowww
no i think its a holton f hight
very good horn but i don't know if we can by it now
I love your comment, it's horn or motocycle?
YEEEAAHH!!!
what's that note at 4:05???
Mega gut
Does anybody know what horn Vlatkovic is playing on?
Es una trompa!!! No es trompeta😅
where is Baborak?
What type of French Horn is the fourth chair playing on?
Looks like a double descant
Who is playing what part?
NOOOOOO, not what i meant at all, is that it caught me by surprise, im pretty darn sure he could sound like that in any horn tho
hey super
and @porchevin
It's a Paxman40
Congrats for this performance i know it's really really difficult to play, just i think the tempo is a little bit too fast, but the horn players are impressive !
The tempo should be around 150 bpm, so I think its perfect.
@@MmANCZ there is the text, and there is the interpretation, 1nd for that, this is only personnal feeling ;)
why is 2nd horn outplaying 1st?!?!
Fucking awesome. Vlatkovik has 4 balls
I thought this was written for two valve-horns and two natural horns. What's with four valve-horns?
Schumann 3rd Symphony "Rhenish" is written for 2 valved and 2 hand horns.
Sometimes it was little loosing rhythmical coordination but still very good performance !
haha 7:10 YES!!!!!
6:50 the horns
there are 5 just sayin..also it was beautiful
Jazzy!
@6TrippleC6 it's certainly not a Paxman, perhaps a Hoyer is my guess.
hey marcus
GO HORNS
jk last one was the conductor.....i feel stupid
I guess you could say they were very horn-y... nyuk nyuk... ;)
Cheat?
Better intonation and accuracy, and a clean soud is to cheat?
@Eli Pandolfi. Correct; it´s a Paxman; sounding much better then the Alexander 103 (they are only average;-)) )
So Dohr is a genius because (don't know about now but for the most of time) he has one of the best tones I've ever heard on an alex and I think it's a 103
Alexanders are some of the best. Not just average. Have you ever played one? The good ones at least?
+JonatasMonte He does have a 103.
Much better than Rodek Baborek! Solid! Bright! Overall fantastic playing by all horn players!
*Radek Baborák
Much better than james the horn guy! Solid! Bright! Overall fantastic horn playing by all horn players!
Nice E at 7:13!!!
KONY disliked this video.
Que pena, un director sin cojones!
I expected more from this composition. First listening, and i think there is too much from first horn. It could be very well adapted to a single, or maybe double horn concerto, without much loss...
The composer could have used more of a chorale style, and that would probably sound much better!
whine whine whine
I've heard that this piece is so demanding that it is customary for the four soloists to pass the first part around, agreeing that at certain points that the one playing the first part moves to second, second to third, etc, rotating the highest notes among the players so that they all get to sound heroic.
We have to remember, however, that the modern valve horn had only recently been invented in Schumann's time, and the piece was written as a demonstration of the new invention.
***** It's the exact feel you ahve when you hear Baborak playing the 1st along with other 3 horns.
I meant that the ~composer~ could have written for all horns playing together more often. I don't know shit about how well these guys are playing anyway, I'm a cellist!
+Érico Schmitt its not a concerto (sonata form) for horns but rather a free flowing 'concert piece' as its name suggests--such as a fantasy--sort of rumination/show piece of horns with orchestra in schumann's typically wayward, poetic, charming style...
lol that first player has that upper register horn >< cheater
