Tell Stearns that last year wasn't a fluke. Stearns is still unfortunately rebuilding the team. He was pleasantly surprised that they won as much as they did. But i don't think he feels this team will win in 2025, so he is keeping his prospects and signing low price free agents. Its a shame. If he focused on winning this coming year, the moment Alonso started his shenanigans, he would've pushed to trade for Guerrero Jr. Instead of wasting spots on Montas (4.84 ERA) and Channing, another pitcher with a high ERA, he would've pushed to sign Burnes or Snell, and if he failed, he would've sign Flaherty and Quintana or trade for Castillo, Cease or King. They just signed infielder Madrigal. Another waste. Instead of signing Iglesias, he wants to give Baty and Mauricio another shot. Iglesias batted .337 and came in the clutch. He's also a lifetime .280 hitter capable of playing 2nd, SS, and 3rd. He is more likely to outperform McNeil, Baty (who will probably hit .240) and Mauricio (who may start the season injured). He views Acuna, Williams, Gilbert, Clifford, Sproat, and Tidwell as the future of this team and considers signing Vlad Guerrero Jr on a 10 year deal after the season as more impactful than trading for him now. He's trying to dump McNeil and Marte, who may still positively contribute to this team this year. Again, Stearns does not seem too interested in winning this year, he wants to use this year for the development of his initial vision. That's why Holmes, who can dominate as the 8th inning guy is being given the chance to start. He seems to have the burden of the 2025 season in front of him as he prepares for the next.
Otherwise, his next moves should be to sign Iglesias, Get either Alonso or Guerrero Jr at 1st base to protect Soto in the lineup and get a top of the rotation starter and maybe still sign either Quintana or Flaherty, if they can afford it. Soto is supposed to add to the lineup, not replace Alonso. They are supposed to go all the way this year, something Stearns is showing he doesn't have the confidence in them to do. Acuna, Williams and Sproat should not be traded, but Mauricio, Baty, Gilbert, Clifford, and Tidwell should be on the table to acquire either Vlad or one of the starters aforementioned.
