    Darkrai and Absol are the most unfortunate pokemon I mean Darkrai once lived on a island, isolated from society. Later humans came and got nightmares, Darkrai saw this and left the island. And Absol is literally pure and good, by trying to get people to prepare for a catastrophe.

      Ikr!
      In gen 4 you find Darkrai on new moon island, and in platinum the mysterious dialogue after you catch it states that it went to new moon island to prevent people from being dragged into its nightmares. Full moon island is nearby, meaning anyone who does end up in a nightmare somehow could be cured. It secluded itself on a random island to avoid dragging people into nightmares, and it did this WILLINGLY. It isn’t evil, it’s just a very shadowy pokemon that controls nightmares, and thus is a dark type.
      Absol isn’t evil in any way, shape or form. It appears before a disaster in an attempt to warn people about it, but due to the fact it can’t speak, it’s appearance before the disaster is the only way it can warn people. But because of this, people think Absol causes the disasters, oblivious to the fact it intended to help them.

      i would argue that except around half of it's pokedex entries on it basically states how it sucks the life force of everything around it to extend it's own life when it's close to death which is the MO of many fantasy villains who do that to selfishly keep their youth/stay alive

      Faizal Abdullah only if Yveltal is out of line. Zygarde is the defender of the cycle. If something bad happens he’s they’re to fix it. If for some reason Xerneas is no more and life is immortal Yveltal would come to fix it and take out was in necessary to make sure the cycle continues. In that case zygarde would not interfere simply due to the fact it needs to be done. If yveltal for some reason goes on a rampage like it did in the movie then zygarde, given that it can form where yveltal is at, will try to stop it

    • @wapson2176

      theprivateer well it doesn’t do it to keep its youth, seeing as it’s basically a dark Phoenix. It does it to maintain the balance. It got angry once and when Xerneas calmed it down it stopped immediately, saw what it did was wrong, and fixed it right away.

    Yveltal doesn't belong in the 'true evil' category. Yes, it is horribly dangerous, but it's not malicious. Together with Xerneas it maintains the balance of life and death in its region. It's like calling Hades inherently evil just for ruling over the dead. Furthermore, when Yveltal drains life from things around it, it's doing this to survive - else it wouldn't be reborn from its cocoon. Yveltal is more like a force of nature than anything, it's relatively unbias and acts on instinct, not motives.

    I definitely think that "dark" type is a better name than the original "evil" type. It works better as a fear, being super effective to psychic. Plus I think it's a bit unfair to call a lot of these pokemon "evil."

    • @ReachStudioPro
      @ReachStudioPro 6 лет назад +19

      +Wilfred Cthulu It's a mistake to assume a word in the japanese language directly translates to only one meaning. What I mean is, the word for evil used as the typing for dark in Pokémon does not only mean "evil". It's a collection of meanings, such as scum. It's not just "evil", it's also being an asshole, a bad person, a douchebag etc.
      That is as far as my japanese knowledge goes. I don't know if there is more to it and I don't know how far this word goes in the japanese culture. I have yet to encounter it enough during my japanese studies. It's always better to assume Japan is correct with their namings. Their language is extremely complex and deep. Same applies to their culture. That's why Japan is so fascinating.

    late comment but perhaps:
    Umbreon is dark type because in Japanese folklore, dark/night and evil are all but synonymous; anything that lurks in the night is considered an evil yokai, and Umbreon associates with such things.
    Poochyena and Mightyena is dark type because hyena society is very harsh, especially the females, and hyenas harass other predators off their prey or come around for the last of it
    absol is dark type for a sort of "fight fire with fire" idea: because it can sense evil happening, it gains some evil/dark magic itself, though it may not necessarily be evil in nature. Kind of like Riku in Kingdom Hearts after his heel face turn.

  • @HigureHokousha
    @HigureHokousha 6 лет назад +361

    Something to keep in mind is that this is "Evil" from a Japanese perspective. A lot of these Pokemon are "Evil" because they use tactics that are deemed dishonorable.
    The Mightyena line, for example, uses ambush tactics: This is pretty much a necessity for such a species, but that doesn't prevent it from being seen as underhanded and "Evil." Hyena's are also known to be scavengers, which is ALSO looked down upon (as seen with many other carrion eaters among the Dark Types).
    Umbreon uses stealth and subterfuge--this is also seen as dishonorable and underhanded, and thus "Evil."
    Skunks use their spray to blind their enemies, rather than facing them head on. Again, it's just good tactics, and essential to their survival...but it's viewed as a dishonorable way to win, akin to throwing sand in someone's eyes.
    It's interesting to note that this same mentality is likely why Fighting Types are super effective against them: The fighting type is the "Honorable" type, and is the closest thing you'll find to a "Good" typing. Thus, the heroic and honorable Fighting type triumphs over the "villainous and dishonorable" Dark Type.
    Psychic completes that trio, in that it can beat the Fighting type with clever (but not dishonorable) tactics (in addition to the "Mind over Matter" trope), but is seen as vulnerable to the manipulations and predations of the Dark Type (because it lacks the notions of honor and directness, which are what allows the Fighting type to win).

In Pokémon Amie and Refresh, the whole Hydreigon line is actually REALLY dorky and affectionate. And from a story standpoint; Yveltle is supposed to represent the fragile balance of life and death. Killing is indeed evil; but it is an inescapable fact of life. And in the great circle of life it is imperative that things do die, as decomposing living things to a world of good for what remains afterward. 🤷🏻‍♀️

    I'm sure others have mentioned this but there's a good reason why Alolan Grimer and Muk have the dark type. Alola has a pristine environment, so there's little liquid waste for them to feed on. Instead, they turn to eating garbage. Here's the twist: the Pokedex entry for Trubbish in Sun reads "Unsanitary places are what they like best. They can be spotted in Alola, often with Grimer in hot pursuit." In other words, Grimer and Muk are adapted the dark type because of their role as predators.

    Dark types' weakness against:
    -Fighting: A concept of war against evil like in a jihad. This also like a wars of shoguns, samurais and knights who battled their enemies, and also the stories of ninjas, cowboys, or superheroes who fight against villains. In action martial arts themed movies/media, like Mortal Kombat, Tekken, and Street Fighter series, good fighters combat the evil characters and become champions.
    -Bug: In Japanese culture, bugs have heroic imagery like in Masked Rider series.
    -Fairy: Fairies' spells/magics overcome evil in fairy tales.

      Thank you for using a the word jigad properly. A lot of people think that it just means holy war and killing people - but in Islam the main concept of jihad is a internal struggle against evil. Jihad could be something as small as not having more candy because you know its bad for you - to something as large as resisting the urge to go on a killing spree or somethin'. So thanks cause a lot of people (especially the media ) uses it incorrectly.

      @ZombieBarioth 6 лет назад +6

      Its probably a bit of both actually. Japan views "evil" a bit differently, a lot of their tales about "evil" beings tend to be more of the misunderstood or tragic variety, not evil for the sake of being evil. That would describe most dark types, from the seemingly normal to outright destructive.
      The dex for Absol even states that its blamed for the disasters for simply being there, despite usually appearing to warn people. Its considered a bad omen, like much black cats in some cultures.
      You can see that sort of thing in real life too. Hyena's and other predators tend to be viewed as "bad" simply because they kill other animals, doing so in the most efficient way possible, which just happens to seem quite ruthless.

If you have a single piranha all by itself, with no other piranhas nearby, it's so docile you can literally stick your whole arm in front of it and it will just act like it's of little to no interest. Dark type does sound like it has something to do with night and darkness, but also a metaphorical darkness, an evil nature. And then here in Germany the type is called Unlicht (non Light) which entirely removes the metaphorical concept of good and bad and really just focuses on levels of light for some reason.

    Some observations of my own concerning the Dark typing of the Pokemon here...
    1:50 While the reading on their Pokedex entries is a fair point, I think the main reason for Alolan Meowth's Dark typing comes from their cultural inspiration. Just as Kanto's Meowth are based on a type of cat iconography that brings good luck, its Alolan counterpart seems based on black cats, which in Western superstition are believed to bring bad luck.
    5:30 It's worth noting that Pokemon based on animals with "evil" reputations (including scavengers, like vultures) tend to be given the Dark type a lot (which basically sums up most of the Pokemon in the category at 16:35), so Volibuzz probably aren't supposed to be "more evil" than vultures, but are labelled as evil BECAUSE they are vultures.
    7:05 Also, one of Sobek's most notable actions in Egyptian mythology was eating the severed testicles of the king of the gods Osiris after he was usurped and dismembered by his treacherous brother Set (himself often considered a god of evil in modern interpretations of the myths) and his remains thrown into the Nile, so... Dark type by association, I guess?
    8:10 Again a Pokemon considered Dark type because of its animal inspiration's real world reputation. Murkrow are based on corvids like crows and ravens, which are often associated with death and thievery in a lot of cultures.
    8:26 Again, weasels are often associated with treachery, but more noteworthy is that the Sneasel line is based specifically on the Japanese mythical creature called a kamaitachi (sickle weasel), which is known for slicing up hapless travellers for no good reason with such blinding speed that they are invisible to the naked eye.
    10:55 The Houndour line is also based on hellhounds, and if a creature said to hunt down people to drag them into hell doesn't deserve the Dark type, I don't know what does.
    13:05 Another confirmed inspiration of Hydreigon that contributes to its "evil" typing: King Ghidorah of the Godzilla series, a kaiju first introduced as a monster that has wiped out all life on multiple planets it has visited, and has come the most recurring antagonist in that film series.

    • @ArashiTsurugi
      @ArashiTsurugi 6 лет назад +1

      Maple Samurai Black cats being bad luck though doesn't really apply every where. Even in the western world. For example in Britain and Scotland black cats bring good luck. This also holds true in Chinese and Japanese culture that black cats are good luck and can ward off evil. For example a black maneki neko is for good luck as opposed to the gold one which Kanto Meowth is based on brings money and fortune. Also Alolan Meowth oddly enough is classified as blue and not black in the Pokedex which I think refers to it's coloring being based off of the Russian Blue a breed of cat with gray fur who some say came from breeding Russian royalty's cats.

I suppose even Umbreon falls into this category, as it uses shadows to hide itself rather than face its opponents head on, and I could swear there's a Pokedex entry mentioning that its glowing patterns hypnotize prey (though that could be Inkay and Malamar…or both…). Honestly, that makes a lot more sense to me.

      @@Wandergirl108 That's still not evil at all. This is exactly why I don't think it should've been called the Evil type. It just creates too much confusion. Fighting dirty doesn't make you inherently evil. It's just the way you fight. This is just very illogical. Hunting in the shadows can be considered Dark type but definitely not Evil type. So by that logic, Greninja would be considered evil just for being stealthy.

    I feel like absol is dark type because typings are sheerly humanly asigned. Nature doesn't work in types, it has no reason to, just like that animals don't walk around with latin nametags stickered onto their forehead. Typings are basically like the labels biologists use. It helps us order these animals. These labels aren't enherently wrong, they help us keep things organized, but they aren't natures design. Not to mention creatures can be mislabelled. Heck, we correct past mistakes all the time! So absol's typing is based on observations, which turned out to be corrolation instead of causation, causing a mislabelling. I especially like that things like these get put in because it shows a much more realistic world full of yet to discover knowledge and misconceptions and misunderstandings, making it far more realistic than if the pokedex and the professors were always right. By the time people realized absol was a gud boi, it was stuck with the wrong stereotype and typing, much like how how the wolf alpha beta theory has long been busted yet is still widely accapted.
    TLDR I think Absol has a dark typing because they purposely implemented human mistake into the pokedex for realism.

Before the fight, he also says if he is defeated, he will let DarkRay and his friends go with no consequences. After DarkRay gets defeated, he comments that Maddox’s breath smells like rotting children, and he replies saying that he’s never harmed a child or already injured opponent. Much like how people will initially fear animals like spiders, snakes, sharks, crocodiles, bears, some bats, etc. because they’re carnivorous and evolved some dangerous looking features, Pokémon Researchers probably just categorized these Pokémon and their move sets as Dark type due to the contrast that they apparently have with the exclusively human concept of morality.

      But here we get into an interesting conundrum: the Dark type isn't just perceived by humans, they are actually affected by moves a certain way due to being Dark type. Dark-type moves have a normal effect on, say, the Rock type, and are super-effective against the Psychic type; Dark-type Pokemon are unaffected by the Psychic type, and susceptible to the Bug-type. Humans didn't make this up, this is how they function in the Pokemon world whether humans are there to see it or not. I mean, in OUR world, humans made it up, so they have to have been given the Dark type by Nintendo for reasons, but the way they operate in the Pokemon world is actually affected by them being or using this type, it's not just an arbitrary label that carries no meaning.

      Kaelan McAlpine well buzzwole loves to show off his pecks, so that’d be pride. The sign of wrath is a lightning bolt so that could be xurkitree... that’s all I can think of, none of them have stand-out relations

      Pheremosa could be Lust, it's known as UB Beauty, And Nihilego could either be Greed or Envy since it's a parasite as said in Bulbapedia and shown in Sun and Moon when it takes over Lusamine.

    17:20 just hypothetically, but maybe it’s based off of the fact that duels are considered honorable, whilst fighting one guy with 10 other people, isn’t.

    I love the Fullmetal Alchemist references (pride, gluttony) but don’t you think you’re missing Wrath ? That could easily be Mega-Gyrados or Tyranitar. But i love your videos, always interesting and different. But Fairy types should be next.

      Steampunk Papercut I would agree but Cthulhu is neither evil or good like that's the entire point of HP lovecraft's work

    7:24 The Ultra Moon dex is wrong. That's pangoro.
    They never allow prey to escape. Their jaws are so powerful, they can crush the body of an automobile.
    Omega Ruby Very violent Pokémon, they try to clamp down on anything that moves in front of their eyes.
