Recorder is a very difficult instrument to play well. What is playing well? first off, the sound is created not just by the instrument but by the musician, just blasting air into a record, is not great recorder playing. In addition, a recorder has the capacity for dynamics. If you're just going to play an entire piece at mf, what's the point really? Next, there's is a thing called articulation, this is an important tool, that requires tremendous technique to be flawless and clear, not choking the instrument off every time a note ends.
This was a classic case of Petriism. Just blasting out notes, boring, uninteresting, unmusical. Shameful really.
