- Hey everyone. Hope you are well. Today Wilson & I test 2 Halon 1301 Systems protecting 2 large magnetic laboratories. The way these systems is in the following steps:
Upon the first alarm, a bell / strobe will activate to notify of a fire. This bell goes on infinitely.
Upon the second alarm, the system goes into pre-discharge. The horn strobe next to the bell will begin to sound. This signifies that there is 20 seconds until discharge.
After 20 Seconds, the discharge light one the panel activates, the solenoids are energized (if connected to the bottle, it would dump the Halon), and the Horn Strobes outside the protected area begin to sound to signify that discharge has begun.
Any alarms on this system will result in the activation of the building fire alarm.

Yep, there are some Halon systems that will automatically activate the Main Fire Alarm System.

Awesome video. Suppression systems are some of the coolest alarm systems, especially Halon. Is Halon 1301 the only variant of Halon that is still used this day or is Halon 1211 still used?
1211 is only used in extinguishers. It has a higher concentration and drops the oxygen content down way lower than 1301 does. The whole point of Halon 1301 was to have a rapid suppression agent with minimal damage to equipment and to people.

I have been trying to find more about Halon because there have been so many variations and most of them are dangerous for humans, it's just been hard to find videos like that because Halon is not something that you can just go out and discharge, but now I know a little bit more. Thanks!
I thought Halon systems had to be replaced with FM200 or some other suppression systems because of risk of suffocation for anyone stuck in the room and other regulations.
@MBTA Fan they are generally tied to the buildings fire alarm system but they are meant to protect server rooms, labs and other sensitive areas
Halon is non toxic to humans. It was deemed unsafe for the environment because of its effects on global warming. You could be in a room with halon dumping and you will be fine. CO2 on the other hand, it can kill you.

where do you keep finding halon systems with their own alarms? this is still awesome though!!
Im a Halon/ Clean Agent Suppression Technician. These systems are actually in more places than you would think. So I do these more often than fire alarm now. I try to film all these old ones because there isn’t much documentation or many videos of them existing. Im glad you enjoyed!

Yes you need a high school diploma to do this job. However, a college education usually isn’t needed to do this. Most of the skills you learn on the job.

lemme take a guess… sensitive areas?
Usually areas where there is sensitive data or equipment that if damaged, would cost thousands if not millions in losses.

Nope. They are original to the system. These are pretty old models from the 80’s.
