That's why it hit so hard! I've been struggling to explain it, but you're 100% right. It's not the character making the sacrifice, but the player himself and feeling like he let his best friend down. Such a fucking gut punch.
Oh geez. "Fix him. FIX HIM" *Laura visibly flinches* Tears. Instantly. It's Laura that gets me. It's so honest. And to be clear, I think she flinches at the pain Travis is exuding, not out of fear or anything like that.
To me, this always felt like a Laura/Travis moment. It almost seems like Laura's flinching at the pain and sorrow in her husband's voice, even though it's Grog speaking. At any event, it's clear that fear has nothing to do with it.
This reminded me of something i heard a while ago. Travis was the voice of Roy Mustang in FMA, and Laura was the voice of Lust in the same anime. I read that Travis couldn't hear the scream of pain that laura did as Lust burned in that fight. I don't if that is true, but i like to think that it is.
Keyleth asking vax how shes supposed to get over him if he keeps sending ravens is so damn real! Amazing roleplay. What seemed like a kind gesture at the end of the campaign would absolutely turn into a constant reminder of what she lost
Scanlan giving up his wish is beautiful and my No.1 choice because it transcended the story and was about the players actual personal emotions and it came from the duo who got this rolling as a silly whim and the guy who treated it with a loving but hilarious irreverence. And it's so subtle and understated from Sam of all people.
One of the saddest parts is that Keyleth, being a druid, will outlive all the members of Vox Machina, and will be the last to see Vax in the after-life, she will be the last to see her beloved again
The worst thing to remember too is, Grog, Tary, and Percy will be the firsts to go (people that either considered her a sister, vice versa, or both), Then Vex, and Scanlan and Pike will be the last two to really be with her for a decent time. Even then, Keyleth will outlive them by many centuries, being not only a druid, but a half-elf druid.
Should be mentioned regarding Percy's resurrection - Taliesin always saw a bad end for Percy, and was planning on letting him stay dead. Or rather, he hadn't decided for sure yet. He was in the next room watching the stream, to text Matt whether his soul was willing to return or not. The other players basically convinced him to bring Percy back with those performances.
For me, it's not just the epic story...it's seeing how the players themselves become invested and are affected by it while they are, together, writing it. Those two last comments by Sam and Travis, among their sobbing and emotionally exhausted friends really touch me. Sam: What a nice story... Travis: Let's do it again! Chills, people. Pure chills of the best kind.
Dude the “Fix him. FIX HIM!” will always get me. Especially with Laura flinching away from him not out of fear, but from the power of his emotion. It gets me every time and if they put that in the animated series I’m gonna be sooooo happy🥲

Scanlan's departure speech was still the most powerful moment on this whole campaign for me, when he asked for 1 person to say the name of his mother and everyone was silent, I bet most people watching at that point were the same. That event said alot about how much they, as well as us, really thought about scanlan as a character with problems, with story, we liked his jokes, his wit, his songs...but we never really KNEW him.
Personally an exchange like that would me my worst nightmare (from a recieving standpoint) my worst fear is letting people down and I think I would have had to leave the table if one of my party members (therefore friend, even if in character) said sth like that to me
Liam having lost his mother, and in the literal face of death Vax finding comfort in seeing his mother again is truly the most bittersweet expression of honesty I've ever seen from a D&D game. I lost my father when I was 19, I've always held close to the idea that I can accept my own exit if it means seeing him on the other side. Liam seems to have such a wonderfully big heart, I just hope he knows how much it meant to his audience to know we all feel the same way.
Out of all the words and all the moments, I think the one bit that always give me goosebumps are their very final words; "What a nice story." "Let's do it again." Great compilation!
The best part of the Dalen's Closet wish (other then its actual use) is that it is Scanlan's last wish, ever. Another reason why I love Sam so much. Also great video! Travis really proved himself as an even greater Role Player with his pure reaction to Scanlans death.
The only reason it's his last wish is because of the roll of the dice. Honestly, it's like the dice have magically inherited all their story-telling abilities, and know just what to roll, and when to roll it, to provide for some amazing narrative bests that otherwise wouldn't have happened.
He was in The Search For Grog, and later had his own The Search For Bob one-shot, as he had taken several items from VM. The problem was that Bob had become insane, from being on Pandemonium for so long, and VM ended up getting him back to the Material Plane after getting their possessions back.
Sam asking Liam directly if using the wish was worth it and Liam not having enough context to understand immediately going "YES he's running away!" is heartbreaking
I just like how Joe was like "what.. the fuck.. is going on here?" and he starts looking at sam crying, then everyone else, and realising that something just happened that he missed.
Also, as much as I love the True Love's Crit from Vex'ahlia in Percy's resurrection, my favorite moment in that is actually Marisha's gut-punched face when Matt tells her to make a straight Charisma check and her resulting nailing of it. It's such an awesome character moment for one that had such struggles with the charisma stat.
When Liam says I love you and when sam starts crying was the first time I shed tears throughout this campaign. It was so emotional and real, I always tear up when I watch that scene. Love this! Thank you for putting in the time to create this and upload it.
Not going to lie but when Sam sacrifice his wish for the counter spell to stop Vecna to me was the top three moments in this campaign. Update: But overall this was great to watch.
Narratively, I would say that it fits where it is. The other moments have more emotional impact on the story. But when you bring in the meta impact it has on Sam and Liam, it rockets to #1 for me. It will always be my favorite emotional moment simply because it's not just a story moment, it's this beautiful moment between two close friends.
If i recall, Liams mother lost her battle to cancer not that long before the Raven Queen takes Vax away, which makes the reunion ingame that more emotional.
I just wanted to let you know how great these videos were. There are so many CR clip videos but these are really special, your commentary adds so much, and I love that you let the clips run their course. My favourite emotional moment, that wasn’t in here is in episode 99 Masquerade at 56:50 when Taryon is telling his dad that Vox Machina taught him what it means to be a family. That Grog and Vax taught him what it means to be a man and a father, that Pike taught him what it means to be a caring mother, that Keyleth taught him what a sister is like, that vex taught him what a best friend is like, (And then the bit that always makes me tear up) that Percy showed him the type of man he’d like to marry some day. This was the first time I cried watching CR and I regularly go back and watch it. Just wanted to share.
Jake Holmes thank you so much, that means a lot to me. i wanted to do more than just splice a bunch of random scenes together; for most people, it’s been 1 or 2 years since watching campaign one and i wanted to set up the scenes so the full emotional impact was there. that tary moment was actually #11 on my list and i wrestled so much with finding a way to get it on there, but i wanted to also feature as many different characters as possible. i’m glad you liked the video!

During the Dalen's Closet one shot, I was already a sobbing mess listening to the vows, but the moment Scanlan said he wanted to give them a Wish, I wept even harder. He didn't have to say what he was wishing for, all I heard was "Wish", and I knew.

part of me will always be convinced that a large portion of vax's reaction to scanlan was really liam reacting to his best friend. the conversation was so real and i think the shock and hurt that liam was portraying was real too
man I remember reaching the scene for Scanlan's wedding gift as soon as he stopped the ceremony, I realized what he planned on doing and it broke me down, and I started bawling my eyes out and the fact that it was the last time he could ever cast Wish made the scene all that much more beautiful Sam you beautiful man
Usually you see Travis’ face has some sense of joy, amazement or appreciation toward the emotion in the room, even during sad moments but 29:53 is an example of the sadness overtaking him. Amazing and powerful moments like these have me absolutely hooked to DnD and Critical Role
One of the things I like about when Vax comes back during the wedding and he looks to Percy, Tealsin either intentionally or unintentionally comes across rather crass when when he speaks to Vax for the last time coming full circle as Percy once said that his last words to him were "Screw you, I want my final words with you to be indignant and irritated".
I haven’t even seen the whole thing and just these snippets made me sob. It’s absolutely beautiful what a bunch of people can create together out of nothing. Thank you for compiling this.
The one that actually got me to full ugly cry was when they resurrected Scanlan how Ashley's poem succinctly put forth a genuine break, you can hear her hold back a sob and that is what really got me. We have all had our beautiful moments of crying so very hard throughout these seasons, but besides that, Sam's sacrificing a wish spell to save the world but lose his friend, and that ending of Vax's story with Vox Machina, I think we all have grown very attached to these characters, and their players so much more. tl;dr I love Ashley the most, she's a wonderful person, entire Crit Role cast and crew are amazing, never forget to love each other
I always felt that episode 115 should have included a chance for all the members of Vox Machina telling Liam just what he meant to them in response to Liam's One Shot.
This list pretty much matches my own. I didn't think Scanlan's death, resurrection, and leaving could be matched, but the entire finale and Vax's goodbye just left me a wreck for days. Great list, great editing, and I agree with Soda Wax about your pleasant voice!
Scanlan remembering percys parents names but not bringing it up till after he left showed how real it was to him and how much he cared even with the feeling of betrayal
So good I had to sub. I literally learned about Critical Roll today and they’ve already made me cry. Amazing RP, immersion and story telling. I can’t wait to learn more about these players and their story.

Having them all here, one after the other, was another experience entirely. These nerdy-ass voice actors sitting around playing dungeons and dragons have truly been a source of joy in my life. A beacon of light in an otherwise mostly dark existence. I cannot help but love each and every one of them, even though I've never met them. They are talented story-tellers... Yes. However, I think most Critters know; It's not the roleplay or lore that makes this campaign (and C2 for that matter) so amazing. It's that they truly are a family... You can feel the love radiating from them almost as a tangible warmth. To witness such love is a wonderful, incredible gift. I'm so very happy they decided to share it with us. We are richer for having known them, friend.
I've watched the ending of campaign 1 a few times now, and this was the first time I realized just HOW meaningful it is that Matt included Vax reuniting with his mother. Ouch Matt, damn.

For starters I have spent the last hour crying and boiling my eyes out! This was amazing I love it. So many wonderful moments and you said a best they're so many wonderful moments with all of these hours. I started crying so hard when you covers Scanlans death. That was one of the hard ones for me. Just cuz of all the information that was brought to the table as you cover in the video. The speech that Pike gave and Grog we're very touching the first time I saw it. Another moment that I remember that was to me a little bit more personal, was the moment with Terry and him coming back home and talking to his family. Grogs death hit me the hardest. I could go on and on. I love these videos I love seeing your input and your beautiful view. I enjoy this and one so many more of this thank you so much for rekindling the love that I have. It kills me that Scanlan didn't hear Grog during the ritual because of a dice roll. That's D&D, but man, Grog's hurt when Scanlan tells him as much, is brutal.

My favorite next to Keyleth is Scanlan. So 83-85 are always a joy to rewatch. I love when shows go for my heart and make me cry and Critical Role delivers for something that’s improv and you barely get in written shows. I practically have 85 memorized with scanlan’s snapping and breaking. *chef’s kiss*

God the Vax goodbye scene fucked me up for days afterwards. It was like I was mourning a good friend’s passing. And as I’m writing this I’m a crying mess because that scene still makes me so sad and upset. Such an amazing moment.

If I may be so bold, I think the way that VM dealt with the farmer Reginald's daughter, Amelia, in Episode 56 ("Hope"), deserves an honorable mention. I just watched that episode yesterday and those scenes were tough.
#5: There is a great breakdown of this fight by Matt Colville here: ruclips.net/video/Nz8EoyXTHV8/видео.html. If you watch Sam and Liam, you can see the torment in Sam's face over saving his friend or stopping Vecna. That was the point when he asked, "Is it worth it?" There's a point (I didn't see it in this video) when you hear an odd noise. Colville mentions this is a sob from Sam over the decision. #2. This showed that Travis truly understands the difference between intelligence and wisdom. There were some great Grog moments in here. The things that Scanlan said the group was dead on. No one took the time to learn about him. Looking back before this moment, this is his downward spiral coming to a head. Sam said this was supposed the end to Scanlan's story and he planned on switching characters.
Number 4 and 5 are my 2 and 3 for sure. I didn't realize what was happening during the stream with the wish, but I went back later to see why Sam was so upset and it broke me. You can tell that went far beyond just Scanlan trying to save Vax, that was Sam trying to save Liam. I don't know what was going on in their real lives off screen but there is no question how important that was to Sam and how much it meant to Liam that he was even trying to do it. Then to have Scanlan's final wish of all time be for Vax to be at Vex's wedding was just, I couldn't. I was sobbing. I don't think I'll ever be able to put into words how important this campaign was to me, and how much it hurt to lose Vax.
Also remember that Liam said in the campaign wrap up that the biggest heartbreak of the campaign was Vex not inviting Vax to her secret wedding to Percy. Liam looked truly hurt and upset by that.

Also, as much as I love the True Love's Crit from Vex'ahlia in Percy's resurrection, my favorite moment in that is actually Marisha's gut-punched face when Matt tells her to make a straight Charisma check and her resulting nailing of it. It's such an awesome character moment for one that had such struggles with the charisma stat.
When Liam says I love you and when sam starts crying was the first time I shed tears throughout this campaign. It was so emotional and real, I always tear up when I watch that scene.

Not going to lie but when Sam sacrifice his wish for the counter spell to stop Vecna to me was the top three moments in this campaign.
Update: But overall this was great to watch.
Watching Sam's face..... and then Laura and Joe seeing somethings wrong but not knowing. Sam is the MVP, no one even comes close.
Narratively, I would say that it fits where it is. The other moments have more emotional impact on the story. But when you bring in the meta impact it has on Sam and Liam, it rockets to #1 for me. It will always be my favorite emotional moment simply because it's not just a story moment, it's this beautiful moment between two close friends.

When Sam says "9" you see Matt's face go from "you can't do anything" to "He's really gonna do it..."
If i recall, Liams mother lost her battle to cancer not that long before the Raven Queen takes Vax away, which makes the reunion ingame that more emotional.
I just wanted to let you know how great these videos were. There are so many CR clip videos but these are really special, your commentary adds so much, and I love that you let the clips run their course.
My favourite emotional moment, that wasn’t in here is in episode 99 Masquerade at 56:50 when Taryon is telling his dad that Vox Machina taught him what it means to be a family. That Grog and Vax taught him what it means to be a man and a father, that Pike taught him what it means to be a caring mother, that Keyleth taught him what a sister is like, that vex taught him what a best friend is like, (And then the bit that always makes me tear up) that Percy showed him the type of man he’d like to marry some day. This was the first time I cried watching CR and I regularly go back and watch it. Just wanted to share.
Jake Holmes thank you so much, that means a lot to me. i wanted to do more than just splice a bunch of random scenes together; for most people, it’s been 1 or 2 years since watching campaign one and i wanted to set up the scenes so the full emotional impact was there. that tary moment was actually #11 on my list and i wrestled so much with finding a way to get it on there, but i wanted to also feature as many different characters as possible. i’m glad you liked the video!

During the Dalen's Closet one shot, I was already a sobbing mess listening to the vows, but the moment Scanlan said he wanted to give them a Wish, I wept even harder. He didn't have to say what he was wishing for, all I heard was "Wish", and I knew.

"I'm sorry I didn't know that" was a beautiful interaction too. While everyone is acting defensive Grog is just sad that his friend is upset and hurt.

One of the things I like about when Vax comes back during the wedding and he looks to Percy, Tealsin either intentionally or unintentionally comes across rather crass when when he speaks to Vax for the last time coming full circle as Percy once said that his last words to him were "Screw you, I want my final words with you to be indignant and irritated".
I don’t know if I can ever watch Vax’s Goodbye without crying. I don’t think there’s a sadder goodbye put to reel.
That little gasp from Ashley when Percy took his first breath broke me 😭
I haven’t even seen the whole thing and just these snippets made me sob. It’s absolutely beautiful what a bunch of people can create together out of nothing. Thank you for compiling this.
The one that actually got me to full ugly cry was when they resurrected Scanlan how Ashley's poem succinctly put forth a genuine break, you can hear her hold back a sob and that is what really got me. We have all had our beautiful moments of crying so very hard throughout these seasons, but besides that, Sam's sacrificing a wish spell to save the world but lose his friend, and that ending of Vax's story with Vox Machina, I think we all have grown very attached to these characters, and their players so much more.
tl;dr I love Ashley the most, she's a wonderful person, entire Crit Role cast and crew are amazing, never forget to love each other
I always felt that episode 115 should have included a chance for all the members of Vox Machina telling Liam just what he meant to them in response to Liam's One Shot.
This list pretty much matches my own. I didn't think Scanlan's death, resurrection, and leaving could be matched, but the entire finale and Vax's goodbye just left me a wreck for days. Great list, great editing, and I agree with Soda Wax about your pleasant voice!
Scanlan remembering percys parents names but not bringing it up till after he left showed how real it was to him and how much he cared even with the feeling of betrayal
So good I had to sub. I literally learned about Critical Roll today and they’ve already made me cry. Amazing RP, immersion and story telling. I can’t wait to learn more about these players and their story.

Taking in each one of these moments over the many, many months of watching the show was one thing. Having them all here, one after the other, was another experience entirely.
These nerdy-ass voice actors sitting around playing dungeons and dragons have truly been a source of joy in my life. A beacon of light in an otherwise mostly dark existence. I cannot help but love each and every one of them, even though I've never met them.
They are talented story-tellers... Yes. However, I think most Critters know; It's not the roleplay or lore that makes this campaign (and C2 for that matter) so amazing. It's that they truly are a family... You can feel the love radiating from them almost as a tangible warmth.
To witness such love is a wonderful, incredible gift. I'm so very happy they decided to share it with us.

This is my 4th time watching both parts and I will never get over the pain of seeing Vax go with the Raven Queen.
I've watched the ending of campaign 1 a few times now, and this was the first time I realized just HOW meaningful it is that Matt included Vax reuniting with his mother. Ouch Matt, damn.
I know... I just can't fathom how beautiful that whole section is. If I am not mistaken Liam's mother had passed some amount of months prior to that episode?

I constantly cried through both of the videos.The storytelling of this powerful campaign was so beautiful and thaught me many things,in my opinion is Critical Role one of the most touching groups i've learned to love.I feel excited seeing my Twitch notification popping up telling me it's time for the next adventure these people touch many and inspire us to the max.We cry,laugh and scream together with them as the plot unfolds and they know how much they help us we are very very thankful for this group bringing joy,peace and even sadness reminding us all that every moment is precious and should be cherished like it's our last
For starters I have spent the last hour crying and boiling my eyes out! This was amazing I love it. So many wonderful moments and you said a best they're so many wonderful moments with all of these hours. I started crying so hard when you covers Scanlans death. That was one of the hard ones for me. Just cuz of all the information that was brought to the table as you cover in the video. The speech that Pike gave and Grog we're very touching the first time I saw it.
Another moment that I remember that was to me a little bit more personal, was the moment with Terry and him coming back home and talking to his family. Grogs death hit me the hardest. I could go on and on. I love these videos I love seeing your input and your beautiful view. I enjoy this and one so many more of this thank you so much for rekindling the love that I have. And I will always remember to keep loving.

Like a fire, it hurt because of how close we felt to it, but all the warmer for having it and better for it existing. Thank you once again for your hard work. God the Vax goodbye scene fucked me up for days afterwards. It was like I was mourning a good friend’s passing. And as I’m writing this I’m a crying mess because that scene still makes me so sad and upset. Such an amazing moment.

I wanted to say that bacause I know we all find it strange to hear our own voice and I get anxious when I have my voice on a video. thank you!! yeah it’s definitely hard to listen to my own voice, but it was a fun challenge and i wanted to give more context to each scene instead of just splicing everything together. and yes, i’m still working on the old anime one, just getting through the series “monster” so i can give it the ranking it deserves. :)

If you watch Sam and Liam, you can see the torment in Sam's face over saving his friend or stopping Vecna. That was the point when he asked, "Is it worth it?" There's a point (I didn't see it in this video) when you hear an odd noise. Colville mentions this is a sob from Sam over the decision.
#2. This showed that Travis truly understands the difference between intelligence and wisdom. There were some great Grog moments in here. The things that Scanlan said the group was dead on. No one took the time to learn about him. Looking back before this moment, this is his downward spiral coming to a head. Sam said this was supposed the end to Scanlan's story and he planned on switching characters.
Number 4 and 5 are my 2 and 3 for sure. I didn't realize what was happening during the stream with the wish, but I went back later to see why Sam was so upset and it broke me. You can tell that went far beyond just Scanlan trying to save Vax, that was Sam trying to save Liam. I don't know what was going on in their real lives off screen but there is no question how important that was to Sam and how much it meant to Liam that he was even trying to do it. Then to have Scanlan's final wish of all time be for Vax to be at Vex's wedding was just, I couldn't. I was sobbing. I don't think I'll ever be able to put into words how important this campaign was to me, and how much it hurt to lose Vax.
Also remember that Liam said in the campaign wrap up that the biggest heartbreak of the campaign was Vex not inviting Vax to her secret wedding to Percy. Liam looked truly hurt and upset by that.

As someone who has never seen a critical role campaign and stumbled upon this vid while torturing myself, #4 was so beautiful. Heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time.
