one thing I do is keep copies of certain FAA laws in my flight bag i.e. damaging a drone, furtherance of a business , airspace reg's, just in case I may need them if an issue comes up. It makes them a whole lot easier to explain to people that always want to question you.
Jason, you’re such an inspiration. I met you at an AOPA fly in at Bremerton, WA. Still a type 1 diabetic, but now with a part 61 license, and a part 107 license. When others told me I couldn’t do it, I said, “Hold my Diet Coke…”. My question for you guys is, “Why is FPV so looked down upon?” I mean, I do everything else FPV, like drive a real car, fly a real airplane, walk around… It would seem that the whole “Advanced 107” thing would require FPV or a chase drone, or some other silliness. Maybe couple FPV with ADS-B in and Remote ID, so we have better situational awareness. Just some thoughts. As you say, I’m always learning.
WOW, the VFR and IFR take me back to when I used to get the chance to fly in helos with the pilots while in the service. Man I miss that! This was a great Thursday night chat session!
I think the question was not about planes flying low near an airport, but just low. I live in an area where airplanes fly over my home well under 500ft agl all the time. The closes airfield to my house is about 8NM away, so there is absolutely no reason for them to be that low aside from joyriding. I have called the local FSDO a few times and have never gotten a reply. I am waiting for the day one of these pilots pops over a hill and flys into my drone, because they were far too low for me or an observer to know they were coming.
Ken you have a one of a kind show, thank you for all you do and all the factual information you share 👍🏻 you have amazing guests as well 👌🏼. You rock!!
@@KenHeron The FAA is overstepping their bounds according to the legal purpose for the FAA to exist. They are there to control US airspace in its description there is nothing about controlling commerce.
Been procrastinating to sign up this course and get my Part 107... No longer! Just signed up and will finally get started! Trying to read the free info from FAA was just not working for me. So thanks for the discount code and now to set the goal of getting through material and schedule the test.
I just received clarification from the FAA. A hobbyist only needs to register once. That registration number is then applied to all of his or her drones.
Ken you really should become a NINJA REPORTER dude. PEOPLE would really love you then. You know, not like now. I'm kidding brother I love you man. I'm not kidding about becoming a NINJA REPORTER.
Great to Jason back on the show, he is always a wealth of good information. Wonderful show guys, I really enjoyed it. And Kelly took at low blow at you with Rotary engine comment.
We always need that one "nerd" that can take government bs talk and writing and put it out in English for the ones that can't understand the FAA sketchy writing when it comes to rules and regulations. Great job Jason 👏 need him on more often Ken.
FYI, the football players CANNOT be a part of the operation. This was defined by the FAA to me when I flew Indycar races for NBC. The ONLY people directly involved with the flight operations are exempt of 107.39. This includes, RPIC, VO, Camera Operator. You cannot blast an announcement to a crowd notifying them they are a part of your operation. Talent/actors on a closed movie set do not even fit the part of an operation requirements.
No! You may not fly a Cat 1 over people without Remote ID . . . which currently does not exist. Here a quote from the FAA's website, "In addition, for Category 1 operations, no remote pilot in command may operate a small unmanned aircraft in sustained flight over open-air assemblies unless the operation is compliant with Remote ID."
Off subject but may be of interest. Yesterday our local news KSBY SLO reported that our local airport has welcomed NASA and decided to allow a Space Port to be built in my hometown. I'm geeked!! But.... This isn't a traditional launch pad. This runway use is for low orbit 🛰 satellite deployment. I'm not sure what angle or speed the landing or takeoff will be. I'm nervous about sharing airspace with NASA.
Hmmmm….that little aside concerning manned IFR vs VFR flight…..could that concept be ported to the unmanned rule set? For example, if a drone PIC had this hypothetical IFR sUAS rating, this would permit drone operations beyond line of sight. In other words, it would be possible to fly a drone with camera and view screen beyond line of sight and out of visual range, as long as you had further training, rating.
Mr heron, Odd scenario question for you. A. Flying a drone and getting footage with no intent to sell it, then selling it later on. VS B. Flying with the intent gain footage to sell... Both require 107 or A doesnt and B does? So weird and shifty.
It's based on intent I believe. If flew for recreation you cannot change your mind later and use that footage commercially. If you hold a cert you are supposed to know your intent before you fly.
Yeah, the word intent comes up a lot in FAA rule language. It's all very subjective. A lot of these things haven't had precedent set in court, so it's all still up in the air. Pun intended!
@@CarbonGlassMan I agree, just hope it isn’t anytime soon. If idiots would fly more legit and respectfully and responsibly, they may leave us alone. Time will tell.
Kinda of a double standard - either we need a 107 for purposes of a business (to keep it simple) or we don't - under a roof, over water - I mean really?
My question is why is it illegal to fly through the woods on private property while wearing goggles? No way there is any danger involved and a spotter couldn’t see it anyway?
Why not charger less for the part 107 exam than more people might go for it I know I would. Too me that is a lot of money to take a test for a hobby and to be able to upload them to RUclips

The 'over people ops' Categories 2&3 are very confusing to me. I don't understand the Kinetic principles and don't believe the FAA has really defined them. The whole thing is so fluid as be a joke. How does a Part 107 even attempt to adhere or follow these requirements when they're not clearly defined!!???
The FAA doesn't want to kill FPV. It wants to regulate the FPV. What happens when the Gov regulates commerce? It gets expensive so only the haves can do it.

What about us from Europe, do we need a 107 to film in the states or will our home country rules and drone flying license apply?

If I use a drone for both recreational, and business, do I need to register each drone for both, or register them all for business only?
All for business.
Then you can fly recreationally when you want to.

Ciniwoop of the bowling alley would need a part 107 for the tiny whoop lol as it further benefits the bowling alley

Great information! I'm wondering if a person gets their FAA Part 107 license, can previous drone flights now be eligible for compensation?
The answer is yes.
If you fly FPV how do we register the drones with no serial number if we have to register each and every drone we own.?
As a self build.
There's a box you can tick for that.

Europe does it way better. Making money or not doesn’t say anything about your ability to fly a drone.
I don't even fly mine anymore. I don't want to be the one they make an example out of. So I pretty much quit flying.
Way to gray and hard to understand as a average pilot! FAA doesn't get real world hobbyist.
