  • @heytheresacha
    @heytheresacha 2 года назад +55

    They should have helmets on 😭 and the reason you and Lilia were having so much trouble was because your skates need to be way tighter around the ankles - a tip is to have someone else put your foot with the skate on in between their knees and have them pull as tight as possible. The tighter they are, the safer your ankles are going to be and the less they will.hurt. With loose skates, you're asking to have an ankle roll over 😩

    • @KarterC
      @KarterC 2 года назад +4

      Yes you want them very tight to support ankles, but there is such a thing as too tight and restricting circulation.

    Canadian momma here; definitely get the kids in helmets and thick gloves the next time they go skating, I was shocked to see in the video just how many kids where there without helmets (not just Jessskids) Even a bike helmet is better than nothing when it comes to the ice… not only do you want to be protected from hard falls but other people skating around you when you fall. ice and metal blades are typically a recipe for disaster. This is also not shaming Jess in any way, just trying to share some tips to keep people safe).
    You want to wear thick gloves, not the thin ones like in the video. You’re essentially wearing blades under your feet. If you fall, someone could skate over your hand, so if you wear thicker gloves your hands are better protected than with thin ones.
    And also wear a beanie (preferably on the thicker side). If you happen to fall and hit your head it’ll soften the blow kind of like a helmet.

    The machine that cleans the ice is called a ZAMBONI. This being said from the one person who hasn't ice skated in over 30+ years 😂!!! I did HOWEVER get my husband to ice skate on a real frozen pond in Missouri the Christmas before we got MARRIED👍 (he made 1 time around the pond & called it quits 😂... I skated UNTIL I was literally TURNING BLUE😂😂😂... I USED TO BE A REALLY GOOD 4 WHEEL ROLLER SKATER - I WAS ALSO A GYMNAST... THESE THINGS MADE ICE SKATING VERY EASY👍❣️) BTW...THERE IS ONLY 1 ICE RINK ON O'AHU and not MANY people go there, especially since the pandemic began💔.... All 3 of our kids have been there for Church events ... But I personally have NEVER BEEN THERE AT ALL 💔.
    I HAVE NEVER ICE SKATED SINCE MOVING TO HAWAI'I IN 1989... other than that one time while in Missouri in December of 1995 👍❣️ We got married just a few months later on February 10, 1996 🥰❣️ Our 26th wedding anniversary is right around the corner 👍❣️

    I'm from New Jersey and i guess since i grew up in a hockey family I learned to skate wearing a full cage hockey helmet and hockey gloves(in case another kid runs over the fingers with a skate), also used a hockey stick to learn to skate for balance. Glad to hear he is okay!

Helmets when skating is just so normal here, we'll even wear them for sledding sometimes. Speed and ice are no joke and neither are head traumas! I'm relieved that Kaden is ok but next time, helmets!!!

    I’m from Iowa and we go to rinks like this or indoors to skate all the time… and I’m shocked at all the Canadians in the comments saying helmets required. I’ve never come across that and it usually looks pretty similar to what Jess is doing in California. Is there anywhere in the states that mandates helmets? So interesting.

      Same! From Kansas and there's lots of ice rinks in the winter. Nobody ever wears helmets. I get it for safety, but it's not like these kids are out there doing jumps and triple axels. There's just skating!

      @@allysonwhite1325 no I don’t need a mandate to keep my kids safe. It’s something I overlooked. I’ve never even thought of bringing a helmet until reading these comments. I grew up skating, take my kids skating, and I have never seen a kid with a helmet on at an open skate situation like this.

    Amusingly enough the biggest ice incident I've been around wasn't while skating, but while playing broomball (you play in sneakers) after hours with a youth group. I practically grew up on the ice (I joke I was skating before I was walking and it's basically true). I wasn't playing at the time but helping watch some littles (under two) and their dad (the leader of the group) just lost his feet and fell on the ice. Ended up with a nasty bruise and cracked his orbital bone but didn't have a concussion. It was crazy because there was a couple dozen people on the ice playing and it's a fairly physical game but no one was even close to him when he fell. I think the thing that got everyone the most was before they started playing his oldest was on the ice (she was only 2 1/2 at the time) and she was running and having fun and I have a picture where you can see from her shadow she had both feet off the ground. And then we ended the night with taking her dad to the hospital from a fall.

    so falls happen, they need CSA approved full caged hockey helmets for falls like Kaden had, full snow suits, if they don't know how to skate teach them to walk on the ice in skates first, gloves should be thick, use ice helpers also if the rink has any, protocol to any kid or adult hurt they need to report it, file wise

My daughter fell and hit her head on a marble coffee table when she was learning to walk at my in laws. Her head had a 3 inch "goose egg" and her skull ended up being fractured from her hairline down to her eye socket! As it healed she looked like she had a lightning bolt like Harry Potter!!! Lol. Her 3rd grader brothers thought she was the coolest thing ever and wanted to take her into school for show and tell!
