Jess I work at a custom home builder, you should definitely contact the warranty department and make a claim. Your house is so new that it’ll definitely be covered by them. You can also file a claim against the company, this shouldn’t have happened in such a new home.

I can understand your stress, and yes it's anxiety inducing with how much you don't have control. But from experience that mold could already be starting with that much carpet. And if it is water from a clogged toilet, you have a possible health hazard regardless of feces, it's still bacteria on top of mold. As an asthmatic, this can effect a kid quickly if they are around it. I hope they can resolve it as quick as possible.

I feel your pain! We had a pipe bust in our wall and had to do basically all the same. It was crazy! But I learned a lot. You can just have the one company take out the wet and dry it out. They should be able to test for mold and keep anything that can be kept, and then you could do your own repairs or hire your own company of choice after you receive insurance money. That’s what we did!

Yes! This is a straight plumbing issue. I would’ve gone after the builders first. There should’ve been some kind of warranty period where they cover this kind of things. If not, they picked a terrible builder. It’s well known new houses like this tend to have more problems.

I work at a restoration company. The smallest claim can take 6-8 weeks from start to finish. Your insurance should cover it no problem. The other thing is check with your insurance, you may have a living out allowance where you can stay in a hotel. I know the fans are loud, but let them run, they really speed up the drying process. At least you only have to pay for your deductible.

Had the same thing happen to us, had to rip out the entire first floors flooring, and basically gutted the 2 downstairs bathrooms because of a broken toilet fill pipe that flowed for about 5 hours. It sucked!!! We didn't have to move out, but the house was a mess and hard to live in for a couple of months.
I'm surprised that when you had the leak in your laundry room that you didn't have to have parts of the house gutted then.
If I were you with those two issues, I'd have the house checked for MOLD!! Because mold can cause a lot of health problems and you may not know it's there if it's under the carpet or in the sub floors or the insulation.

I don't remember how long we were living in it when it happened but it was covered with the builder. They covered the repairs, Pods for some stuff and they paid for the hotel etc. Your boys might not have caused the toilet problem. When they were building people could have thrown some stuff in the pipes etc and after so long it backed up. Check it out before you lay out any $$$. I had another house that happened to. Good luck!🙏🙏🙏🙏

One thing that is so important for toilets... It has to have big enough pipes with as little as possible turns. That way you will never have clogged toilets. You have to put that as a number 1 on your list when you build a home.

First thing that popped into my mind is get them to check where your washer leaked while tearing up your carpet since you had that happen also. Especially get that area tested for mold please. Not easy to go through 2 renovations close together trust me. Then family and friends told us "we told you to get that checked while the other work was being done!" Yeah lots of hard feelings towards lots of people and especially with ourselves.

You should keep a garbage can in bathroom and don’t let put toilet paper in toilet this way it won’t clog your toilet. We always had a well and septic so we trained our kids not to put toilet paper in the toilet. Just a thought.

We had a crack in out toilet vent pipe. This was about 3ish months after we bought the house. It's a old house from the 50's. We even had the pipe inspected before purchasing. It was a slow leak and we don't know how long it was leaking when we finally found it. When it's gray water they have to remove everything it touched. Our kitchen is on the same wall and we only have one bathroom. So we were out of our house in a hotel for 8ish months. All the flooring was removed and we had a whole kitchen and bathroom remodel. Everything but the vent repair was covered by home insurance and the home warranty covered some of the vent repair cost.

Oh I feel this! Water is SUCH a pain. My daughter forgot to put the shower curtain IN the tub one night when she showered, water ran into the central air vent in the floor, leaked through the duct work and through the ceiling in the downstairs bathroom. I was SHOCKED at what the restoration company had to do to fix it, basically they gutted and renovated my entire downstairs bathroom, all new everything. It was insane. Long process, our house was a mess, our LIFE was a mess at that point too; our cat had just died, our car got broken into it was a rough month when that happened!! When it rains it pours... through the ceiling! Lol

Water damage is the biggest pain in the butt as a homeowner, honestly - it will destroy everything in its path + it will take the "path of least resistance" as it flows, whether inside or outside. Living in the Midwest, we have to deal with it outside a lot with both rain and snow. So sorry you're dealing with this - hopefully, it is repaired without many issues.

I can understand the stressful situation, but mold is an issue. You got to rip it all away and change everything so you don't have mold. Mold could already be in the walls and carpet. I know it's expensive. I hope this can be resolved quickly and also you're asthmatic too. It's better to get it done now instead of later and also deal with black mold and bacteria later could cost even more. Also good thing insurance is going to be pay for it right?

Restoration companies charge an absorbent amount since they sub it the repairs!

The walls, floors, ceiling, mattress, ceiling fan was ruined! I had to sleep on my new mattress in the living room for like a month for the repairs. Luckily we were able to use our homeowners insurance so that saved us a nice chunk.

Note to self teach the kids how to turn off the valves for your toilets/sinks and if you have a inside main shut off tell them where it is. second have a plunger in every bathroom or near every bathroom and finally let your kids know that no matter what time it is, some issues are better to take care of now rather than latter. living in California you also might want to check the this old house/ask this old house library they might have a low-flow solution that won't clog or as often.

Take pictures and document everything. I have been through 2 major house issues both with water. The first was shortly after we moved into the first house we purchased. Of course it was Labor Day weekend. I had gone into the bathroom to take a shower and used the toilet and flushed before starting the shower. Next thing I know my husband comes running in saying that there is water pouring down onto the washer and dryer downstairs under the bathroom. I had to rinse the shampoo out before he could turn the water off. So apparently the previous owner liked to all of his home repairs, but didn’t know enough to do them properly. The flange that connects the pipe under the toilet to the sewer line hadn’t been installed properly ie no soder/glue/or whatever they use to make a solid connection. It broke free and since the shower drains into the same pipe that water was dumping down below. There was also a sump pump in the basement floor that collects any water from a drainage system to prevent the basement from flooding and most of the water was flowing into that which triggered the pump to suck it up and make it go to the sewer line and it was basically just a loop of the water going up and coming back down again and again. It also soaked the carpet in the family room on the finished side of the basement. It had no windows and immediately started to mold. Insurance sent out people to clean it but it wouldn’t dry. They had to rip out and replace the carpet and they had to remove the flooring in the bathroom and were supposed to take it down to the joists but the men didn’t want to mess with the older flooring which could have asbestos and so they didn’t do a good job and we would have issues later because of it. The second time was in this house when the really cold temperatures froze a water line in the laundry room. It would have been a minor job had they fixed it quickly but they did not and it lead to them having to tear everything out down to the studs and floor joists and start over. It took 9 months to get it finished and they did the Sheetrock wrong on the windows and we can’t close 1 completely. I have to keep a dehumidifier in there to keep the moisture down.

And specified how many sheets (he called them tickets fr the ride) of toilet paper we needed for pee (4 squares, fold in half, and in half again until you can’t use anymore) and Poo (8 squared and fold in half, and then half again, and repeat until you can’t use anymore)! That won’t solve the problem of overflowing toilets, but can definitely help!
