- VERY nice upgrade here! See the before/after shots -- imgbox.com/g/DKY4vIxcP9 -- The source recording was VERY drab and fuzzy, but Topaz did a great job of sharpening it up and reverting the compression. I also doubled the framerate with it as well. I then used Resolve to perform some MAJOR contrast adjustment and some INCREDIBLE color restoration. Sometimes when doing these enhancements the colors just seem to 'latch' onto the picture, and that was the case here, as the colors are now deep and vibrant. WOW does the game look nice now. My thanks to Fort Knox and his Seahawks RUclips channel -- www.youtube.com/@fortknox4740... -- for providing the DVD files for this project.
Man I miss hearing John Madden and Pat Summerall (RIP) calling games.
We were so lucky. NOBODY sounds like this. Or ever will again. No crazy yelling over a 5 yard gain and that non sense. Our era is unmatched
@@waynenewman6481Yeah that hyped up screaming over a 6 yard screen pass always gives me a jolt.
Great announcing on both networks in the 80's. I think at one point NBC had Charlie Jones, Dick Enberg, Marv Albert, Bob Costas and Don Criqui (very underrated) at one time as their play by play guys.
@@shanetrimble9265 There used to be a difference between pro football and pro wrestling....not anymore.
Tom Brookshier too.
The clarity of this video makes it seem like you are watching from the stadium. Amazing
Giants/Niners was must see tv in the ‘80’s!
As always Dave great work. Bitter sweet game for my Giants. They won first playoff game in 20 something years the previous week against the Eagles. But this 1981 Giants team set up the franchise for the entire decade of the 80’s that got them a Super Bowl in 1986 and 1990.
Just the pureness of everything here. A broadcast of a football game, no big production, no celebrity cut aways. No fancy graphics. The joy and exuberance of the players celebrations. No choreography. The excitement of the crowd. Just ordinary, common people happy to be there to watch, at that point the biggest game in 9-10 years for the Niners. Even the ref is great and to the point. It’s all just beautiful.
Completely agree. The refs just let them play , much fewer penalties , no stoppage on almost every play for a review or a penalty. No dance celebrations after every play.
playing on natural grass getting on all chewed up. Pat and John talking how the field can be an issue. Now its played on these fields that are too perfect
@@daveara1908you can’t even tell that the players actually played a game these days. They might as well play with a suit and tie it’s so corporate now
Back when everything was Authentic including the people.
Couldn't agree more, especially about the player celebrations, just happiness, no swagger, no '"look at me". Everything about football then was so much more enjoyable.
This was when both the Giants and the 49ers were both starting to become powerhouses this decade. Especially with both teams drafting Hall of famers.
I believe that over the years, Ray Perkins has been slighted in his part for bringing the Giants back to respectability. He helped set the foundation for the Giants' greatness the following years. Of course, Perkins having a good D coordinator in Bill Parcells certainly didn't hurt.
NY was 5 yrs away.
This was the beginning of the great rivalry of the 80s between these two teams.
And the playoff rivalry would carry into the 2000s.
You're a national treasure for doing these Dave. I WISH you had older Indycar races to throw up here.
Man, listening to Pat Summerall call 80's playoff games is like a smooth belt of a whiskey neat.
Listening to Pat Summerall call any game from any era is wonderful. A balm for my soul.
I was there! In the pullouts, far side fo the stadium.
Good Lord...the clarity of this video!!!!
Gahhh, I miss this era of football.
Me too I am losing interest year by year!
I know you hear about LT, Ray Lewis, and Singletary, but Harry Carson was an absolute beast at ILB. Loved watching him play.
I watched this game at home in Vallejo CA, on KPIX 5 the 49ers’ station. This was January 3rd of 1982, on the eve of a storm that would bring tremendous flooding & mudslides & devastate the Bay Area and Northern California. The 49ers’ Super Bowl run provided much-needed joy to those who lost loved ones & property in the storms. January 4, 1982 remains one of the worst weather days in Bay Area history.
And this was after the Bay Area as I remember got a ton of rain and there were many who felt Candlestick should have gone back to AstroTurf following a few late-season "mud bowls" at Candlestick (including a December 1980 game between the Bills and 49ers in Candlestick).
That field was in remarkable shape for the NFC Championship Game a week later.
Did it bring lots of people together helping each other out? Lots of times situations like that bring about camaraderie and many lifelong friendships. Pain in the butt in some ways in the shorter term but a blessing in the long run. Just as long as no lives are lost.
@@morthedgebuckle227 Disasters like January 4th always bring out the best in the community. Unfortunately, though, there were lives lost and millions upon millions of dollars in damage. It took quite a long time for Northern California to recover from this storm.
Not to mention the 49ers winning in 1989 after the earthquake. Same goes for the A’s/Giants World Series. I hope both Bay Area wins helped through that disaster. I’ve heard about it a lot though I was born a few years later in ‘91.
@@jeffbowen2608Sorry to hear about that. I didn't know. Thanx for the reply.
The beginning of a dynasty! Thanks for the upload!
Gotta love Madden, "Look at those eyes. Aren't those the eyes of a linebacker?" 🤣🤣🤣
1981: The Birth of Summerall-Madden
Legendary duo!
Back when everything was authentic including the people!!!
Impressive work! It looks good at 1080p or even 360. Thanks for this!
Thank you so much as a Giants fan for this. I remember this game fondly. Heartbreaking, especially after upsetting Philadelphia in the Wild Card the week before. Which BTW, my dad attended that game with his friend, which I am still jealous of to this day. But 1981 was really the season things started to turn around for the G-Men. Mostly thanks to the greatest defensive player of all time. I can't even explain how cathartic it was to even be this far into the playoffs. 1981 was the first time in my life I ever saw the Giants in the playoff.
This might be the clearest game that's ever been shown from that spectacular 1981-82 playoff season as somebody else had stated, it makes you feel like you're in the stadium that day. Gotta love the NFL on CBS intro from the early-to-mid 80s before Pots & Pans came out as I believe this was the first season they used this intro with that awesome theme music. Thanks again as always Dave!
@@BAYAREA-kd1ig Me too, that theme is one of my all-time favorites too as it never gets old. I love the way the intros were setup with the narration telling the story of the game like you mentioned.

Some sports look unrecognizable when going back 40+ years, but this is still very much the same game.
Glad you are back Dave! Would love to see you remastered the Redskins at Cowboys 1979 game. One of the best I’ve ever watched! Not too many great quality videos of that is available.
What a treat. Thanks for all the correction work on the tape.
I'm only 19, but I enjoy watching old games. I specifically looked for this one however after reading in a football book about the scheme Walsh used in this game.
I also miss Pat Summerall and John Madden. Tom Brookshire too
This was the first of many classic playoff battles these teams would have throughout the 80s. I attended every one of them in NJ. Season tix
This is Art....Dam these were the days!!!
They had over six inches of rain in the days leading up to this game, and quite a bit more ahead of that rain as I remember. There were big concerns about the field at Candlestick as in prior late-season games the previous two seasons (including an infamous mud bowl in a December 1980 game against the Bills) that showed why some felt it was a mistake for Candlestick to go back a grass surface (which they did after the 1978 season to help OJ Simpson, who retired after the 1979 season) as grass fields to that point were historically very poorly maintained. It was only after Prescription Athletic Turf came into play in the late 1980's did that change.
This game was on January 3, 1982, one week before "The Catch" that would be Vin Scully's final game as an NFL play-by-play voice (the late Dwight Clark's famed catch in the end zone) when the 49ers defeated the Cowboys in what many looked at as a "changing of the guard" in the NFC.
The Giants in this game were simply overmatched. They came a long way in the 1981 season, coming from 6-7 to win their last three games to make the playoffs for the first time since losing the NFL Championship in December 1963 (back when unless tie-breakers were necessary, the NFL Championship game was the ONLY playoff game as it was prior to the Super Bowl era beginning with the 1966 season). The second wild card the Giants got to make this postseason didn't exist prior to 1978. The Giants then beat an Eagles team that was badly fading late in the 1981 (to where a few years later, the Philadelphia Inquirer actually had reports of drug allegations with that team that fell from 9-2 to 10-6 that season) in the Wild Card round for their first playoff win in memory to that point. Of course, the 49ers would win Super Bowl XVI against the Bengals and would again three years later in December 1984 beat the Giants at Candlestick in the Divisional Round before winning Super Bowl XIX against the Dolphins. The Giants would finally win their first Super Bowl in 1986 (January 1987), Super Bowl XXI against the Broncos, knocking the 49ers out in the Divisional Round in The Meadowlands.
Rob Carpenter was THE acquisition that the Giants got in mid-season from a fading Oilers team that got them into this postseason.
I am amazed at the improvement that you have achieved....I have a copy of this one from YT and yours is beautiful.
I was pretty amazed myself!
Another amazing job enhancing a niners game. Incredible quality
4:10 poetry in motion
Oh wow, that first clip of the Raiders returning a bad onsides kick attempt for a TD….my dad was at that game and told me about it. Said it was the absolute nadir of being a Giant fan - “I’m sitting there in the stands, freezing my ass off. I see the Giants manage to get an onside kick returned for a touchdown, and you could see the Raiders falling down laughing on the sideline. I’m sitting there, and I think ‘why did I pay good money to come watch this???’” 😂
I was there too brother and your pop describes it perfectly. That botched onside kick and “The Fumble” were the darkness before the dawn.
That Candlestick field was in rough shape since a Rolling Stones concert that October. The groundskeepers resodded the field and threw drying compound on the field many times for the rest of the season, but it was still like playing in a swamp.
Word had it back then that the playing field at Candlestick Park was near, or below, sea level, where during the rainy season it was impossible to get any decent drainage, or drying, of the playing surface.
3 things I remember clearly about this game 😁🎯 - Johnny Perkins and earnest Gray's touchdowns and my mother and grandparents yelling at 😢😂me for betting on the Giants !
Two words…Ben “down there givin’ him the business “, Dreith!!
The first Candlestick game that was decorated with the red end zones.
Thank you for the great restoration!
Wow!!! Haven't seen this game in a while. Great work as always Dave. This was the start of a 10 year rivalry that saw some classic games, plays, coaches and players along with 6 super bowl titles between the 2 franchises.
This channel is OUTSTANDING! Thanks...
Good times! Thank you for the upload!
ESPN new york radio host don la greca still has this game on tape I'm sure he would love this
Hey Dave thanks for providing this astonishing update for this gem. 49ers fan here all the way, and I will cherish this enhanced edition until the end of my days. Happy holidays to you, and your loved ones BTW. Cheers :)
You're welcome, and back at ya!
Looks great
1:39 John Madden says a field had never won or lost a football game. Guess he didn't consult with his former boss regarding a certain game in Pittsburgh in 1975. Great to see the beginning of the Giants/49ers rivalry of the 1980s.
Awesome I call this a forgotten classic It went on to become a great rivalry ,I will never forget joe being clobbered in that game or the fumble Or forget the 87 regular season game after joe was hit sweet revenge I was speaking of 2 other ga m es not this one
The best this game has ever looked on RUclips.
Or anywhere else :)
I remember watching this game at my uncle’s house in Franklin Square Long Island and getting frustrated, then my mom grabbed me and told me to stop! I put my mom through the wringer as a Giants fan! I miss my mom.
I love Poetic Justice. There's definitely one of the referees at least that was getting paid off to throw flags and when he called that that was not a safety or a touchdown I loved it that the 49ers came back and intercepted on a Pick 6
Great game awesome quality. Love to see xvi
This is soooo much better quality than the other one posted on RUclips. Thanks bro!
Wow, great quality video once again! Go Niners!!!!!
Excellent
53:40 to 53:48-No doubt Pat and John were referring to "The Epic in Miami"; Chargers vs Dolphins in one of the all-time greatest games. Another all-time classic would take place before this season ended; it occurred the following week on this same field. No knock on Vin Scully and Hank Stram as they were great together, but I wondered how interesting "The Catch" game would have been if Pat and John called it for CBS. Greed was on my mind back then as I knew Summerall and Madden were the number one team and the network had the Super Bowl (XVI) for '81.
I'm surprised the NFL Network has never done a special on the 1981 playoffs. You had the Epic in Miami, the Ice Bowl in Cincinnati, and The Catch in San Francisco. Super Bowl XVI was in some ways overshadowed by these 3 epic playoff contests.
Can you imagine Lawrence Taylor and Ronnie Lott being drafted in the same year? I would also posit that there is not a single NFL defensive player playing today that has half the impact on a game as either of those two guys did. Of course the NFL owners eliminated the defensive star by design but in doing that they made the game a ghost of its former glory.
On the 5th Day of Christmas, Magic Volsky gave to me (us)- The SF dynasty.......
I’m so old school, when Derek Jeter started playing for the Yankees, I wondered if he was related to Gary Jeter.
Sad to say alot of those happy fans would probably turn out to be disgruntled homeowners the next day😢.
49ers cheerleaders look like it’s 1950
23:48 So when the other player is injured you just stay down until they find out the severity???
What are you complaining about?
Brunner didn't play to bad
This game would probably have been more competitive if Phil Simms had been healthy.
just think 4 year old Tom Brady was most likely at this game
LOL when the Crackback block penalty was called the 49ers faithful chant BULLS**T.
The demonstrates, once again, how CBS (2023-24) needs to get rid of their awful NFL music. Their current theme was created at the height of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" era, and is incredibly burned out. So much so that it's painful to hear it...over and over and over and over...during CBS games. CBS had the greatest theme music: This NFL theme, the NBA on CBS, and still using their great NCAA Football theme as well as their NCAA Basketball themes. But this, the NFL on CBS from the 80s, is far and above better than their current "Pirates of the Caribbean" burned out theme.
The NY Giants' helmets are frighteningly God-awful.
What’s up with those obnoxious horns?
Back then concessionaires at the game would sell large-sized plastic fanfare style trumpets for the fans to make obnoxious sounds with. It surprised me the NFL allowed such devices to be used by the audience during the games.
Supershitty officiating crew
Expecting a penalty on every single play. Worst I have ever seen
Dave, thank you for doing this. I miss the NFL. What we have today is 🧻
