UPDATE! I did a test on the whole crayons themselves, and BOY do they glow like radiation. It’s just a shame they don’t seem to translate once used. Seems they need a completely solid application of wax, which… how in the heck? Unless I melt them directly into the paper? There’s a clear reason they stopped making these in 1997. 🙂

Yes, but just a normal UVA blacklight. NOT a UVC germicidal bulb. UVC will damage your eyes. You must leave the room when those are on. People have unwittingly put UVC lamps in public places and the effects of them are horrible.
I VIVIDLY remember using these in preschool back in 1999. 😅 We would scribble with them and then lock ourselves in the dark bathroom to see the glow. They were so cool! They DID actually work back then… maybe something about the age has made them “expire?”
Fluorescence is the emission of light by a substance that has absorbed light or other electromagnetic radiation. It is a form of luminescence. In most cases, the emitted light has a longer wavelength, and therefore a lower photon energy, than the absorbed radiation. An early observation of fluorescence was described in 1560 by Bernardino de Sahagún and in 1565 by Nicolás Monardes in the infusion known as lignum nephriticum (Latin for "kidney wood"). It was derived from the wood of two tree species, Pterocarpus indicus and Eysenhardtia polystachya. The chemical compound responsible for this fluorescence is matlaline, which is the oxidation product of one of the flavonoids found in this wood.
I like the drawing even if it didn’t glow! Btw, I think it’s possible to buy glow in the dark powders, I wonder if those could be mixed in with paint and get some cool results.
Pink and orange: We glow orange! Blue, yellow, purple, and green: We glow yellow! Kasey: *Reality is often disappointing!* A derpy cat for a derpy product like outdated glow-in-the-dark crayons is quite fitting! Even if it didn't actually glow, the cat still looks great!
Well the packaging _did_ say you should really layer them a lot so I'm not surprised they didn't show up on the illustration. I think you really need to go ham with them and really build it up more than you ever would normally.
I noticed a lot of glow and the dark stuff that's on the 'cheaper' side tends to be fairly transparent. But i saw you mention melting them, and that would be really neat to see if the results are different. The art is still super cute tho!
It depends if Crayola used a glowing artificial pigment or dye, a dye would deteriorate faster. But ultimately none of those options are lightfast, which is why opera watercolors fade so quickly. If there is a bit of glowiness left you'd be able to see it under a UV light. Though I doubt any of the colors will activate.
Haha this is bringing back a memory of asking for new art supplies and my mom bringing out an antique box of Crayolas and saying crayons never go bad lol I know exactly what that scratch feels like lol 😆 😄
I remember my great grandma had a couple packs of these and they never worked. Fun in theory, devastating when you’re like 7 and really wanting a glow in the dark unicorn 😅
That silly little face makes me laugh out loud. Just "bleh." Maybe I'm just in a goofy mood because of the greenscreen-suit and AI-voice stream today but I laughed so hard when you lined the eyeballs. The "OH MY GOD" killed me.
You just keep going when the arm accident happened really helps. Like I know not every part of every thing can be perfect but seeing that something not being as intended really makes it easier to see that it is okay. Still a super fun video and artwork!
I have some crayola glow in the dark crayons and they still glow now well over 20 years after I got them. Both the crayons and the colouring pages I coloured with them. I didn't have any difficulties with getting them to apply full enough on the smooth card the colouring pages were on (it was a set with two colours of glow in the dark - a yellowy greeny colour and an orangey colour - some regular crayons and the pictures and stickers). One thing I noticed with you using these is that you got a ton of "crayon dust" which in my experience only happens if you are scrubbing the crayon really hard against the page. I was taught that you have to use a very gentle light motion with the crayons to get a nice smooth laydown. So perhaps some of this was technique, some was a bad batch?
Glow aside, I wonder if they'd look nice on black paper? The colour differences are probably still minimal but I have a soft spot for an extremely light pastel.
It's a shame they didn't glow. I wonder if maaaaybe they would have worked if they were charged with sunlight for a bit? Coz they were in the box for so long hehe. Oh well :( there can always be another video that glows hehee. Awesome material as usual!!!

This is a great idea and love the Drawing, the Black Creepy Kitty looks like it just done with trying to scare the white cat Haha. Also you are supposed to charge them, not sure if you actually did in the vidoe or not but they wont work unless you put them in the Under the flash light. There is a part of the video where the Green actually glows when you were swatching it. That's because you had the Studio lights directly on it. Hope that helps
the back of the box does say to use a thick layer of the crayon to make it glow BUT I feel like kids would end up breaking the crayons trying to make it glow, you did your best Kasey and made an amazing piece while doing so!

I tried and only the chunky crumbs would glow. It seems the application needs to be so thick it’s impossible to get the desired effect. Once crayon gets too thick on paper you start to scrape away what you already applied, sadly. :(
